  1. they made up for the slow service with their obscenely criminal prices. Jeesh! I was hoping to score some rockfish for my cooler, but at $25 a pound, that wasn't going to happen. And the tuna, salmon and sea bass all approached $30 a pound. I bought four tuna burgers at $5.99 a pound, and left with a thought that I should open something, anything, in Potomac and charge outrageous prices. I know the locals rave about this place and swear by the crab cakes, but I would understand it better if I walked in the door with my hands over my head and a gun in my face.

This was why I stopped going there years ago - I remember when River Falls opened ten years ago salmon @ $20 a pound - Even Balducci's was cheaper for similar quality.

  2. I didn't order pizza so I can't address that. My steak was overcooked.

I haven't been on a Saturday--Friday night during the U .S. Open it was pretty packed by 6:00 pm.

I have been more than a few times and never had anything besides pizza and sliders and very happy with food every time. Prosciutto and other meats have great flavor as toppings.

Rockville Pike is packed almost every night, weekends are crazy with two hour waits customary.

  3. Bubby's and Uptown are 2 deli's that opened within 4 months of each other, literally 600 ft apart. I wish them both well, but IMHO, bubby's will close within 6 months and Uptown might last a year.

That would be sad but probably an accurate prediction. I have not been an Uptown fan since day one (honestly only been there two or three times since they opened but not impressed on any of my visits - Food ok, service mediocre Charging NY deli prices but felt like they never delivered the product.

I have been to Bubby's four or five times and maybe I hit them on good days until last week when I was very disappointed (weak food - ok service). I said maybe it was the renovations but I think I just knew they were cutting on food due to lack of business - I really hope Bubby's can turn it around.

  4. Is Ray's Hell Burger still serving onion rings? I was very impressed with their rendition. Good batter/onion ratio and they both stayed connected during the eating process.

I like Hell Burger's onion rings too. Had them about a month ago and they would be on the top of my list.

  5. That's an interesting thought. We eat out frequently because we have to, so having the time to cook and eat something special at home becomes the treat.

I agree, going to the farmers market on Saturday morning and making a special meal at home means more to me these days than going out for a five star meal. When I go out during the week, I am looking for value good taste and expediency.

  6. Hello Kibbee, for BBQ, I recommend Urban BBQ in Rockville, MD or Branded '72, which is also in Rockville. Both of these places cater. Do you like kabobs/falafel? If you're interested in Persian-style kabobs, I recommend Yekta in Rockville, MD or Moby Dick, which has several locations in the DC area.

    Here's all the info:

I hope this information helps you!

Urban BBQ catered a super bowl party for me a few years ago and did a great job.
  7. In Bethesda, Hinata, Tako Grill, or Matuba all work.

In Rockville, Hinode (around the back of Congressional(, Niwano Hana (Wintergreen), or Momo Taro (Cabin John Mall).

Thanks. Hinode was EXCELLENT and prices reasonable.

They had a Vegas Roll that was eel, crab, avacado and cream cheese deep fried - It really worked together. I don't do sushi very often but will definitely be back.

  8. I promised to do a shusi picnic tomorrow night. Nothing too exotic, a few Califonia rolls, some shashimi, something with avacado and maybe some tempora. I don't know much about this type of food so tips and advice is appreciated with the goal to be good food without breaking the bank.

  9. I tried it one Friday night on my way home from work.

I thought the sauce was a little too sweet for my taste. As to the ribs, they were head and shoulders above Rocklands (ok that doesn't set the bar very hight), but I prefer Urban bbq for the ribs. All in all they will do in a pinch, but not the best ever that I was hoping for given their convienient location to me.

  10. Received today:

I'm going to coordinate a group to go, so post here or send me a PM if you think you can make it.

Yes, I know it's hard to plan your schedule 2 months in advance, but I'll be taking a half-day from work to do this, so consider helping out.

    Thanks!

Dan, this sound great - count me in I have some vacation days to use and this is a Great cause

  11. I have been to Bubby's for takeout a few times in the past few weeks and been VERY happy with it. Have to respectfully disagree with the posters above and thinks that Bubby's blows Uptown away.

During Pesach, I had to put together a last minute sedar for second night. Bubby's really helped me out set me up with Charoset and everything for a sedar plate.

The brisket was tender and flavorful, Kugle was just the right amount of sweet.

I also had to take some chicken soup to a sick friend, Uptown had closed early while Bubby's was open - My friend from New York thought the soup was perfect and the matzah ball spot on for both texture and density.

I can't speak to their breakfast or the service as I have not eaten in, just takeout but the counter service has always been friendly and efficient. These days that puts them head and shoulders above most.

  12. Sorry but I have to disagree. We as adults can disagree without flaming or being nasty.

I agree that a phone call in a restaurant is inappropriate, and I always step outside for that. There is nothing wrong in my mind with texting or returning an email while having a meal at a restaurant.

Today during lunch, I received and returned a couple of emails to help resolve a situation at work. Today I was having lunch with kids while a situation at work came up. If it needed a phone call I would have stepped up, but my tapping on my iphone did not and should not interrupt anyone else besides me and my table.

  13. Reserved. (The site was $225 and is much bigger than we need - please donate generously to this worthy cause.) B)

As a note to new members that are always more than welcomed and appreciated there will be an annonymous donation can the day of the picnic to reimburse for the cost. Any collections in excess are always donated to an appropriate organization.

  14. I think they are resting on their reputation. Last week they gave me the wrong sandwich. There is no longer and expiditer making sure things go right. It was a turkey sandwich that i took back to my office and it was pretty bad. Dry meat, poor proportion of meet to cheese and bread was bok not the BEST it was when they first openned.

I called and they said next time I come in they would comp a sandwich. I got a cheicken cutlet sndwich with cheese and pesto. The ratio of cheese to meet was poor. The chicken was overcooked.

I think they ned a restart back to when they first opened.

  15. Looks like another economy victim - The Ben and Jerry's scoop shop in Bethesda was closed with a Leasing sign in the window. That block has more for lease signs than actual business running.

On Free cone day I used to go Bethesda in the afternoon and Rockville at night.

Unfortunately free cone day was the only time I ever saw the Bethesda store busy.
