  1. Hey Sacrilicious. We recently tweaked our recipe for the Tahitian Vanilla Bean, which we spin for both Georgetown & Bethesda locations. Basically, we reduced the vanilla beans that we soak in our base overnight, feeling that it was getting a little too fruity/floral. We also reduced the amount of sugar in our base, which we have done many times, always trying to keep the sweetness in balance. The result is a vanilla that is a bit more subtle and less sweet. As far as the difference between Georgetown & Bethesda, I don't know why? We spin 20 pans for Bethesda in the morning and deliver it with our own freezer van. We also spin 20 pans for Georgetown in the morning for that same location. So, thanks for your feedback and you may want to get your black mint fix while you can, it is on its way out, as soon as the first frost shows up, she is a goner til next year.

Your pumpkin (forgot the specific type) was killer last night.

  2. I just got the sales pitch for this one at the HH Bourbon Heritage Center, after they plied us with tastings of Evan Williams single barrel 10 year (good) and Elijah Craig single barrel 18 year (great), but I was able to resist.

    What's it going for?

    Hansell's blog mentions $150

  3. I know someone who is an extremely boring, uninteresting, and miserable woman who seems to derive no pleasure from anything. She eats extremely plain and bland food: bagels with nothing on them, unadorned salads with dressing on the side, etc. She is very picky and particular (i.e. she wouldn't eat the french onion soup at Ray's the Steaks because there wasn't a blanket of cheese on top).

Let me guess, your MIL, right?

  4. Just as I was looking for what everyone's thoughts are about the top 5 cocktail lounge destinations (thanks for the answers, by the way), I am also looking for everyone's thoughts on the top liquor stores in the area.

I'm not talking about wine selection here; I'm all about the spirits with this post. Best variety, price/value, knowledge of staff, etc. etc.

As an example, I had stopped into Calvert Woodley Wine & Spirits a week or two ago. Nice store, lots of help, etc. etc. But as I was wandering the aisles, some of the prices made me do a double take. Over $24 for Rittenhouse BIB - I just paid $15 on sale at a place here in NY. $35 or more for Campari. Whoa...same store here - $24. Let's not even get into Carpano Antica, which I haven't yet found. But there were some bargains to be had...I think I paid $15 for a 750 of Beefeater, which isn't bad.

Now, I can always schlep the booze down if it really is that much cheaper in NYC...I am driving most of the time. But, I'd still like to find the best in the area - you know, for when I run out of Arrack.

For Wine: 1) Macarthur Liquors 2) Arrowine

    For Spirits: Ace

For Beer: Rodman's (Wisconsin Ave only)

If you are ever in Baltimore, I highly recommend you check out The Wine Source. Great selection of everything at great prices

  5. I'm planning on get a keg or two of Bell's beers for an upcoming party. I know that Arrowine sells it occasionally. Anyone know of any other sources (preferably in DC)?

I've seen them at Rodman's (the DC one), Chevy Chase Wine, Cleveland Park Wine and The Wine Specialist (though Timmy is gone now so can't vouch for their current quality of selections).

  6. I am sipping this as I am typing. It is mouth coating, jammy, full bodied and 16.5% alcohol. If I was still in high school I would seriously hope that my date would have even one glass of this!!! 16.5% is nothing to laugh at! Parker gives this 93 points. Retail is in the high $40's. For anyone who is into shiraz/valpolicella/amarone this is a fantastic bargain: the Wine Library is $29.98. http://winelibrary.com/search.asp?search=glaymond+landrace&x=32&y=9 They note the list price @$39 but if you go on WineZap almost everything is high $40's. Regardless, this is a delicious wine that I think is a very real bargain for someone who likes this style (i.e. Me!). From time to time I will find a wine that I post on here as a real bargain for what it delivers. This is one.

I am not even certain if any D. C. store carries this...at any price. They should. I'd put this just a notch below Elderton Command which is an $80+ wine.

    A Dressner import, right??

  7. Picked up a bottle of this at Rodman's on Friday. It is expensive at $19.99 for a 500ml bottle, but considering the reviews and small allocation (Dave only got 12 bottles), I had to pull the trigger.

Now if only my Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze would arrive.

So true. Nothing like wearing out on the town what you would also end up being buried in. Then let's talk about the metaphorical noose tied around one's neck.

    Suits are for schmucks.

    Eh, nevermind.

No nevermind. I wear a suit to work most days and one day about two years ago I realized that I was indeed a schmuck for buying the seafood at Whole Foods. Now I go to Blacksalt and my days of schmucktitude are long gone.
