  1. The staffer was named in one of the online articles I read the other day, but I couldn't tell you which one. My recollection is that it was one of Biden's aides, not Obama's.

    It is Phil Schiliro, Obama's LA Director. Former chief of staff to Mighty Mouse.

  2. I love Dressner wines probably more than anyone on this board, save Jake. Plus is no secret that I am a good customer and friends with many of the guys at MacBev, but I find it funny that Cornwell is the one pontificating about L/D wines especially when I always give them shit for carrying a limited selection of them. Though they have brought more in recently, Les Champes Libres (Lard, de Choix), Nusserhof and Domaine de Belliviere to name a few.

  3. Anybody happen to know if PS7's is still offering some sort of lunch special?

    My dad's coming down to DC, and I want to take him out to lunch. I'm in the process of picking between PS7's and Proof, but if PS7's still has that $20 lunch menu, or a similar offer, then I think that makes the decision for me.

    If you could get to Alexandria, I would go to Eve. I was meeting with clients down there all last week and had the Lickety Split Lunch twice and was amazed at the quality of the food (two courses) that you get for $13.50.

  4. A restaurant serves food. Red meat, fish, pork, etc. are all food. Most people go to restaurant to eat. Many people don't go to restaurants to drink. My reasoning is specious? Your reasoning makes no sense.

    Couldn't disagree more. Why have I been to West End Bistro only once? Not because of the food, but because of the inexcusably poor and pedestrian wine list that not only does the cuisine no justice, but IMHO makes the experience an unenjoyable one.

    How does Joe Squared compare to Iggie's? Picked up an XL half pepperoni half mushroom this weekend at Jsq and it was just OK (undersauced and crust way to thin). 9 pepper wings on the other hand were great!

  6. I guess I'll stick in my yearly plug for Domaine Sorin Rose Cotes de Provence. The 2008 has landed (thanks to biggest-and-best-of-the-smalls Roanoke Valley Wine Company) and is available in VA and DC for around $15 (including at Mr. Riley's house of joyful yumminess). It's just a tiny step up in fruit level from the delicious '07, but plenty of refreshing acidity. And, it held up well in the fridge for a couple of days, just in case you can't get through that third bottle before switching to gin :rolleyes:.

    $12.99 at Bassin's. Best price I have seen for it this year.

  7. Monsieur Touton has the best connections and best prices in quality Bordeaux in the area. Only Wide World of Wines might be a better source.

    Maybe so, and I should have noted that, but hardly any Bordeaux graces my cellar. If you want to drink their stuff from the Piedmont or Loire than caveat emptor.

  8. I just discovered this place last week. They have one of the nicest beer selections in the city.

    Rodman's just got in the Troegs "Flying Mouflan". This is the first of their one-off scratch series to be put in to production. Not for all you 4% session loving pussies.

    John Trogner says: "We classify this beer as pushing Nugget Nectar off the side of a cliff." “It is bold and intense–think hops dipped in candied sugar and rolled in dark chocolate nibs. Over time, the Flying Mouflan transforms into lush raisin and chocolate overtones as the hops subside and the rich barley flavors come out in the beer.

  9. This is not the first time I've waxed poetically about the wines of R. Lopez de Heredia, in Haro, Rioja, Spain. Made in the very traditional, long aging in rat-old American oak, style of yesteryear, the blancos, rosados (current release is 1999), and tintos are all extremely intricate and long-lived. While the waxiness and subtle fruit of a young Lopez may be unusual, the pleasure of following a bottle all the way through is unlike any in the world of wine.

    Which is all a big ol' prelude to saying that Arrowine has the winemaker, Mari Jose Lopez de Heredia, pouring her wines this evening (Wednesday 3/25), from 5:30 to 7:30. Cancel your plans and go.

    Yes indeed, I am going to try my best to get out there if time permits.

    The "Baby Bourbon", the Four Grain Whiskey and the Manhattan Rye are all now available here in D.C.

    Hmmm..Manhattan Rye is tasty, but is it worth near $40 for a 375??? Review is forthcoming.

  11. I'm not a huge beer drinker, and I tend to go for the lighter beers (not light beer), that are refreshing and with good flavor. So let me throw this out there, are there any beers in particular I should be looking for?

    I'm not into the hoppy, super alcoholic beers (I probably enjoy somewhere b/w 5-7%) and I usually just end up buying Becks or Yuengling for lack of knowing any better, but I'm sure there's better stuff out there. Any suggestions?

    Two suggestions for you, both pilsners.

    1) Victory Prima Pils

    2) Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils (only in cans). I enjoyed it quite a bit, but have heard contrary opinions from others.

    Both at around 5.3% abv with the Prima Pils being the more aggressively hopped of the two.

  12. I was just down there and heard the guys at the national brewery saying you could get Cerveza Imperial in New Jersey (apparently a huge CR population there) so maybe there is Guaro there too?

    Yeah, my cousin in NJ loves Imperial and can get it there, I asked him a few months back if he ever saw Guaro and he hadn't. When I was down there last year I sort of liked drinking the Bavaria Negra.

  13. Lagunitas New Dogtown Pale Ale. Their pale used to be good. Tweaked, it's great...borderline IPA, with lots of grassy dry-hopped character, nice refreshing citric bitterness, mellow caramel malt backbone. This is solid stuff.

    Agreed! Had some last night and found it a great alternative to my usual IPA's.

    Also got to try the recently released Brooklyn Local 2. Excellent now, but a little green. Pours a nice dark brown color with a thick head. The aroma is quite sweet from the candi sugar with a nice yeasty backbone. Taste was much more balanced than I expected..sweet, malty, spicy and just a touch of hops to balance it out. What is really cool is that this beer is 100% bottle re-fermented, which means that the beer is bottled with flat and undergoes an in-bottle fermentation which results in an almost Champagne like consistency. Nice bottle too.

    I fear that you will soon feel the wrath of the Ray's Mujahadeen. And of course, stand accused of a) causing the bad service, b ) being an a-hole for complaining about such bad service, or c) just stand accused uttering blasphemies. And don't expect anything that resembles an apology, I was told that a long time ago by one member of that group.
