  1. We had a fun group of 6 that worked its way through the menu and everyone was pleased with what they got. The space is not large and I see it being a packed space in the months to come. In keeping with the fish theme they have small bowls of goldfish crackers on the tables, which was a good touch.

I started with the popcorn shrimp and calamari ($7). The tiny shrimp and calamari were served in a small pail crispy and not the least bit greasy. The seasoning had a little kick and I did not eat much of the dipping sauce that came with it.

For dinner I had the grilled whole rockfish ($17), which was just slightly undercooked, but it was delicious and seasoned with thyme and lemon. Dining is ala carte and when you order an entree the sides, which are good portions, are $2 each. I had the Big Mac and Cheesy and the spinach. The Mac & Cheese had a crispy top and was made with smoked gouda.

Since there was no booze we invaded Firefly for some wonderful vino and cheese for dessert.

  2. My pork shoulder sandwich was a little on the subpar side today.  I kept biting into little pieces of gristle and I had a little pile of them on my foil at the end.  I'm sure that if I had been one person sooner or later in the line that my sandwich would have been just fine.  I happened along just as Chef Donna was slicing into the part where the gristle was hiding.  cjsadler appeared to enjoy his meatball sandwich though.

Where in the heck was everyone else?

Since my new office is now near Old Town it is going to be a rare treat for me to get to the grill.

  3. Have they started selling meat yet?  (An email was sent out a little while ago announcing that they were going to start selling meat from small farms).

They do have the meat, (fresh and not frozen  ) in the small cooler to the left when you walk in the door. The last time I was in they had a good selection of beef and pork along with whole chickens. I do not remember the exact prices, but they were not out of line with Sunnyside at DuPont if I am recalling correctly.

  4. Any interest in a $20 dinner at Malaysia Koptium on Friday, May 27 (preceeding Memorial Day 3 day wkend.)  If it's not convenient for a lot of folks who plan to be out of town, can we do it on another Friday?

Going to be viewing Dali works and checking out the food scene in Philly. I vote to do it another weekend.

  5. I'm up for that

[Moved from Hank's Oyster Bar thread]

Glad to see that there is some interest from all you dr.com'ers. What's up with you all? We have a new and promising place opening up and that should merit some interest, no?

Tomorrow's meat plus two is Smothered Pork Chops.

I should be getting there around 6pm.

  6. Just how good are one of these sandwiches? I'm seriously considering taking the Metro from my office in Silver Spring. Boss is away, and I'm seriously disgruntled, so perhaps a two hour lunch is in order.

If you have never had one, GO! Get a pork shoulder plus whatever else you may want for later.

  7. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have been doing some looking into the regulatory environment surrounding Montrose Park. There is a very clear prohibition on "amplified music." It would be best if we didn't do anything  disrespectful of park regulations. So the advice is: please leave the amplified music devices at home. If anyone wants more exposition on this, feel free to PM me.

Only a lawyer would think of this...

  8. Oh and mdt, I've confirmed with Chef Drew, we didn't send out any olives with our charcuterie plates on either evening, but those tasty truffled baby peaches do look A LOT like big fat olives... is it possible you didn't bite into one of them???

Well that certainly explains why I thought they were 'strange' olives! ;) It is amazing what you taste when thinking that you are eating a certain thing. Of course truffled baby peaches would have been my second guess.

  9. Takoma's starting to pick up a little.

Got some greenhouse grown grape tomatoes, some very nice asparagus, some basil and some cheese.

    Can't wait for real tomatoes.

I bought some 'soil grown' greenhouse tomatoes at DuPont yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. I cannot wait for the real ones...

  10. I went to the 9pm seating and thanks to some input from Al Dente, who we saw on the way in, had an enjoyable meal. The charcuterie plate was a good start, but ours came with marinated olives. I would have loved to try the marinated peaches.

My grilled asparagus was well prepared and was topped with finely chopped hard boiled egg and aged balsamic.

When we tasted the steak two of us commented on how it had a wonderful woodsy/smokey flavor. We inquried and were told that the grill was fueled with oak. And that poached garlic was delicious!

We enjoyed the cheese plate and one of the crowd favorites was an aged Fontina.

Not much else to add from what Al said, and I am looking forward to seeing the restaurant in full swing.
