  1. I have often read those complaints about service. Yelp has many of them. Leaves me scratching my head as I never experienced bad or rude service from the owners. Actually just the opposite. Almost always upon leaving Lydia will hand my daughter some homemade cookies or a couple bars of Mast Brothers chocolate.

As for the deal with the bathroom. I don't know the details but will ask next time I am in. "After I eat" I got the impression from their FB page somehow it was abused by a customer in someway. But is it illegal? I can't say for sure, as from my understanding they may be exempt with under 10 seats.

  2. Skip the restaurant. Make a picnic and head up to Sacandaga. Unless you're willing to drive 40 or more miles, which for lunch seems kinda silly (and even then you won't find something great). A picnic will be a million times better than anything you'll find in the area.

Though Saratoga is 30 miles away. And I admit to being a bit unusual having drove to Komi for dinner more then once. I agree!

  3. I live within 10 miles of Gloversville and can think of nothing I would recommend. Gloversville at most has a handful of chains and the few independent restaurants are no better. Very likely your best option would be a national chain if traveling a bit farther afield is not possible. Hop on Route 29 toward Saratoga if you can. It has far better restaurants and more options. Should note that it is track season and very busy this time of year.

  4. Go to Schwa if you possibly can, it was the best meal of my life, especially if you're not one for the pretense of fine dining but love the food. Alinea was very good, but I'd go to Schwa first if it's possible, in no small part because they played some Slayer in the dining room. Alinea feels a bit stuffy, Schwa feels like a bunch of friends hanging out in a tattoo parlor/restaurant sharing booze and having a good time.

Go to Hot Doug's and get the Foie Dog ($9) for one of the lunches, and make sure to hit Kuma's Corner, which is a metal-themed burger place. Imagine Hell-Burger with slightly better burgers, servers, and far better music. Oh, and create-your-own macaroni and cheese in a portion well over a pound.

I am looking forward to visiting Schwa before the end of the year. Can't wait.

  5. Why not call Komi directly and ask them?

Because this is the age of food/restaurant discussion boards therefore causing phones to become obsolete.

Truth is I don't know why he didn't call and ask. Can't speculate, but maybe he felt uncomfortable doing so if the policy rumors are true. I will suggest it to him though.

  6. Having not been back to Komi in far to long I thought someone may have updated info?

A friend who will be visiting Komi soon is curious about Johnny's policy on photography in the dining room. (No flash or blog use)

I have heard rumors that photos are no longer allowed and was wondering if anyone could confirm so I could pass on.

    Thanks!

  7. While not contesting Michael's StrunkandWhite-ly complaint, I will say that John (docsconz) is a very knowledgeable diner and one of the few people involved with eG for whom I have a great deal of respect.

I just wish I had the opportunity to eat at the places he does, as often as he does. (Where's that damn envy emoticon when you need it!)

Agree. And also could not be a nicer guy.

  8. I was in Corolla the week before. Most nights we spent cooking at the house and walking on the beach, as we stayed in the 4x4 area and getting to "town" isn't very conveient. We did have two diiners out, one was at some horrible Italian joint in the Food Lion parking lot when I just wanted something quick for the kids.

Cara and I had a very good meal at Metropolis (south of the Currituck Club in a small little shopping center). Great beer selection, truly better than 95% of DC establishments. Very good cocktail menu as well. The wine list was average compared to beer and cocktail list. The tapas-style menu read well, and tasted even better. I was duly impressed with what they were turning out, rather quickly I might add, from an extraordinarily small kitchen. Highlights included the pork loin with soba noodle special, scallops, tuna sashimi, well sourced cheese plate (served at appropriate temperature), and the spinach tagliatelle special.

Easily the best meal I've had north of Duck in the five plus years we have been going there, despite the service being laughably bad. How bad? After waiting 10 minutes to be greeted by the host, I waited 30 minutes to get my first drink. When I finally got the bartenders attention, I asked him to make me a Dark and Stormy every time he made a drink, and just keep them coming. To his undying credit, he did just that and all was right in the world. With 60+ seats and only three front of the house personnel, I've got to think that many of the summer staff took early retirement around the time of my visit. All other aspects of the restaurant seemed very well thought out and I'll definitely be back.

I also was in the 4x4 area and certainly agree about driving to town. It was our first vacation in the area and I had no idea how isolated it is.

Wish I would have known about Metropolis as Jimmy's Seafood Buffet was terrible.

  9. I recently went on another pizza journey which this time took me to Chicago. Alan Richman's recent controversial article called Great Lake the best in the country. I won't get into that argument but will say it's at the top of my list. Right up there with Pizzeria Bianco and that's high praise coming from me.

  10. With the James Beard award only hours away I'm keeping my fingers crossed. But then there is Nate Appleman of A16 who gained much publicity with a very popular cookbook this past year. Oh, let me just shut up before I jinx it.

I'll learn to shut my mouth!

  11. I think the food at Corton is better than the food at Ko by a long shot. The restaurants are sort of similar in some ways, both are "re-imaginings" of 4 star (NYT) food. Both places also have enough service issues to keep them from being the perfect restaurant. I am hoping that this is the only award in the whole wide world that Chang does not get, simply to see someone else win something.

    Agree.

  12. Their names are David and Stacy Gedney. The only place I know them from is The Ashby Inn. Good people. J's was started by Jorie Martin and her husband where their focus was a wine shop and catering. The Gedneys have had it for several years and seem to be doing well. I have not had a chance to get to Element but have been several times to Apt. 2G. Solid meals every time. To be honest, it is an oasis in the desert that is Front Royal, VA.

I can't recall his last name but David Shannon was the Executive Sous Chef at the time. And this other David was on saute.
