Was there a couple years ago and was a fan of Vino Vero, a laid back wine bar in Cannaregio with a great wine selection, good cicchetti, and an out of the way, not too touristy (for Venice at least) location. Delightful spot to have a glass of wine or two and a snack along a more functional canal.

    Sounds good!

I recently did 2 food tours in Venice.

The first was an evening tour upon my arrival - Venice Food Tour: Cicchetti and Wine, $153 by Urban Adventures.  We were supposed to hit 5 venues but one was closed.  So we only did 4, Do Mori, Do Spade, Sepa, and some other place.  I was still hungry afterwards - definitely not worth the money.

The second was a mid-morning tour on my last full day in Venice - Rialto Market Food and Wine Lunchtime Tour of Venice, $103 by Raphael Tours.  We ventured from Rialto all the way to Castello, we had sweets, meats and cheese, chichetti of fried seafood, risotto, pasta with squid ink, and finished with Tiramisu.  This is a much better tour.

For dinner, I ate at Boccadoro, Carampane, Bistrot de Venise and il Ridotto.  A word on il Ridotto - I didn't book it in advance.  When I tried to book it online while in Venice, I found out their website doesn't allow solo booking so I had my hotel call and I got a reservation that way.  Turns out the restaurant was mostly empty that night.  I went a la carte and had (1) black spaghetti with sea-urchins, candied peppers, kale, (2) cuttlefish, mushroom and black lentils, and (3) guinea hen, radicchio, buckwheat and pomegranate , 40 per dish.  The only dish that I didn't enjoy was the cuttlefish but the other dishes didn't blow my mind.

Checking with Raphael Tours, they don’t have the tour you mentioned on their website now.

Perhaps discontinued. Did you book directly with them? There is a tour with that name on Viator site.

    thx

  4. It will be my third visit; last in 1985.

The food has never been that good but I am hopeful that I have the right perspective and will enjoy the Biennale, good espresso, some squid ink pasta and wandering the streets.

Had a last minute 6 day opening in my schedule, miles needing to be used, and a chance to see Venice before it is totally claimed by the changing climate.

Antiche Carampane and Bistrot du Venise are very good restaurants for Venetian cuisine.

Made reservations there for our upcoming trip- appreciate the suggestions .

I have moderate expectations for food in Venice .

    Probably a week, maybe two.

I'd be interested to know for sure since canning isn't one thing I'm familiar with and I'd like to branch out into that territory.

Googling around it seems like a week or two or maybe a bit more.

  7. There are lots of figs in markets now and I came across an old David Leibovitz recipe that looks great.

"Fig Chutney" by David Leibovitz on davidleibovitz.com

if I don’t go through the canning process and just cook the fruit with spices and sugars, how long can I keep it in the fridge?

  8. While I am certainly no expert, I have travelled a bit and I think that the green curry served with what looks like roti is similar to Thai food served in the south near Malaysia.

While bread is not normally served in most of Thailand, in my experience, roti is definite served in Penang Malaysia, geographically close.

Sisters Thai has a similar appetizer that I have enjoyed .

That’s all I know on the subject.

  9. We enjoyed a terrific dinner last night. Although we had studied the menu last week, we were happily surprised by a new one. The service and food were perfect!

The sautéed rouget atop a white gazpacho cream was a great pairing of cold and hot. I am a fan of the lobster French toast to share and was not disappointed.

Lamb and sweetbreads were perfect. Chef is a master of temperature and textures and of course taste.

Almost too full for Dessert and coffee but we persevered.

I was intrigued by the small hammer and found this very interesting information from the hammer museum

Want to hear something cool? Thirty-years ago this month (well, technically "next month"), I had a Sacher Torte at Hotel Sacher (but it was really mediocre, and one down the street from a random Viennoiserie was much better).

For me, it was 49 years ago in July and it was pretty dry compared to other local pastry/coffee shops.

The over-icing is most likely a function of poor transportation, handling, or storage - when things melt, and then re-freeze, that's when I've noticed crystals - the ingredients used might also be a contributing factor, but that, in-and-of-itself, isn't a reason to ding them.

For mass-produced, store-bought ice cream, Jeni's is my favorite, and I don't recall having tried Jubilee; so my comment above is definitely not a criticism of this product - the comment is generic, and may not even be correct.

Ice Cream Jubilee is also coming to Ballson. Who knows? Maybe Ice Cream Jubilee will become our local version of Jeni's?

Just returned from a very disappointing trip to Jubilee at Ballston. Four of us ordered different flavors and all agreed that the ice cream was icy, lacking in flavor and creaminess. Perhaps poor handling but tasted more like ice milk or even Halo.

We really like Jeni's- right amount of flavor, creaminess and coldness when scooped at the shop.
