  1. I think a big difference between Italian beef in Chicago and Philly roast beef is that the former is usually uses meat roasted well in advance, refrigerated, sliced super thin in a deli slicer and brought back to life in the hot jus. And then dipped to some extent in the same jus.

A Philly roast beef sandwich is just a freshly roasted warm sandwich but it's called a Philly roast beef sandwich because they're kind of up their own asses with the civic pride in their food thing 🙂Sliced warm, kaiser roll, horseradish, maybe cheese, maybe hots?

I've definitely had good ones up there though. Like the Cherry Street Tavern's

Bethesdans are a little slow on the uptake -- Kapnos Kouzina is still crowded when I walk by there in the evening. Even in dead-ass August.

Both Kapnos Kouzina in Bethesda, Md., and Requin at the Wharf in the District are not part of the bankruptcy proceedings. Isabella said the restaurants are “the anchors to keep us afloat.

  3. Haven't been in the Dog Haus (though I'm familiar with concept 🙂) but I drive by a lot and there's usually a decent crowd inside. Most tables occupied, though it's a pretty small space.

There are 3 biergartens in Bethesda now. And probably a half dozen other beer focused places, which seems like a lot for a compact satellite city. I'm not complaining.

Yes, now that you mention this, I think it was an MGM billboard - it said something like, "Tuesday is Celebrity Chef Night!" I suspect the investors (I don't know if it's a Hilda Staples thing or not) are making enough coin from the MGM that they can condense the suburban offshoots - it's a good thing, because we were running out of variations on "Voltaggio."

I don’t actually go to these places but can think of three of them.  The Limerick Pub in Wheaton on Elkin Street.  McGinty’s Public House on Ellsworth Dr. in downtown Silver Spring, and Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring.  I would like to see more business development on the eastern side of MoCo, I'm seeing a lot of empty buildings.  The Discovery Building is half empty right now.

Sorry yeah, my post wasn't really clear. I meant there are bars in downtown Silver Spring, Four Corners, Wheaton and (1 in) Kensington but nothing in between (Woodside, Montgomery Hills, Forest Glen, etc). Used to be a Dietle's right next to that Armand's when I was a kid.

The 4 Corners Pub is still up and running.  In existence since 1967.   Just checked their web site and glanced at reviews.  It appears to be the same type of neighborhood bar/hangout/probably sports bar that I recall from the late '70s/early '80's.  Per one review, parking still limited.  Need a bar in the neighborhood?   It's been serving locals for 50+ years.

Yep I hit the Corner Pub every now and then. Still good, food way better than average for a neighborhood bar. Not really my hood (hence Four Corners as the eastern edge of my imaginary bar desert map above) but certainly an easy Uber.

Mason Dixie is making its debut on QVC right now; co-founder Ayeshan Abuelhia is doing the presentation.  They're selling 18 biscuits; options are buttermilk, cheddar cheese, sweet corn, or a combination of the three.  The show host is from North Carolina so he's a really happy guy right now.

Here's the listing on QVC's website.

The story arc for this operation has been really... interesting.

  8. Normally have great experiences at Frankly, but last time (about a month ago) we ordered carryout since there were no large tables available. Walked back from the park to pick it up and our order somehow vanished. I was going to just leave it and go down to Dish & Dram but my wife paid for the order when she placed it. So they had to make it from that point, cost us 20 minutes with the kids hungry and frustrated. Took the pies home and they were a bit sloppy, doughy and over-sauced. All our trips had been great before then. We still drive farther to Pizza CS over Frankly most of the time because it's easier to get tables, order, have kids and other families there. Even though Frankly has better beer, wine, salads, we'll probably only head there for adults only nights and their great patio.
