Jon, go to the Dining Guide - it's there. I just tried a Google search myself, and couldn't find this thread.

May have gotten a Google boost with recent activity but here's how I find everything within DR :)...

    Search "donrockwell.com (name of restaurant)"

Oh, you've got it all wrong, Kevin:  It's a bar with some coffee and baked goods!   ;-)

Actually, I think the idea is to be a neighborhood place to hang out in, whether for breakfast, snack, drink or dinner.  Tres post-gentrification, I suppose.

Yeah, what they're aiming for here is basically Maketto (with fewer shoes and more baguettes). And I frickin love Maketto.

Tom Sietsema wrote about it in his fall dining guide a few months ago, and did a full review about a year before that.

Tom Sietsema writes for 70 year olds. And young people don't know or give a shit about Ann Cashion.

No offense to all parties above. :P

What would bring the tourists to the Wharf?  There's nothing exciting there.  On the other hand, I take my kids to the Naval Yard frequently.

The skating rink has been a big draw this Winter. When it warms up, the boat ride past the Tidal Basin. Visiting families are always looking for something to combine eating/scenery/shopping in post-Museum pre-bedtime for kids. The Wharf will be mobbed by vacationers and regional visitors this coming Summer.

Is there really that much disposable income floating around in this town?

    Yes.

I'm increasingly shocked that D.C. can support as many expensive places as it does today.  Or is the bubble going to burst dramatically in the next year or two?

It will/has for a lot of places in less fashionable areas, particularly the suburbs. Hot, well reviewed and nationally known places like P&P are largely safe from any burst.

We've had great luck getting drinks there, and the bartenders are solid.

That's good to know. Mrs H and I had given up on The Wharf pre-Anthem (at least until it fills in more) and got dinner/drinks uptown the last couple times we went to shows.

  7. Went about a month ago and it was a shadow of its former self (which I was expecting and would not have gone had it not been for a birthday destination not of our choosing). Rushed, cold service. Sit-down chain level food. I was actually surprised that the dining room was as (half) full as it was.

Drinks at the bar pleasant enough and that space still has some potential. Shame it's now facing that horrible, depressing transit center and not a more vibrant development.

It doesn't say that he will be an equal partner, and it says he will move to North Carolina but come back monthly to design the menu.

(Popville) He will continue to be the Executive Chef and will have creative control over the menu. He plans on moving to North Carolina at the end of this year but will be coming back monthly to update the menu.

LOL yeah he's out. They're just trying to placate loyal fans.

On first blush this does not make me very happy. I do think it's been a bit uneven the past three months or so, but otherwise we've been extremely happy with Granville's for the past five to seven years consistently. Our experience with the Vic has been much less consistent.

From Popville: "Update: Chef Teddy Folkman will remain a partner."

If he's running the kitchen, maybe the food will stay largely the same (as they state). I can see your worries re: Queen Vic and food. It's a fun pub but the food over the years has been a weak spot.

Two local entrepreneurs have signed a letter of intent to lease 10,000 square feet of space for a brewery in downtown Silver Spring at 8401 Colesville Rd:

Sounds lovely. And while that location is a super quiet one outside of commuting hours, it's definitely convenient for me. I hope this all works out, though I'm not sure Silver Spring will be able to support three breweries (Denizens + Astrolabe coming soon).

Expanding to Dupont.  In the corner restaurant space at 1250 Connecticut and 18th and N (for years was California Pizza Kitchen and then a bunch of failed restaurants, most recently STK).

Interesting choice of location. Though, somewhat surprisingly, the Dupont area is relatively lacking in nice bars to get a good beer (yes Paradiso is wonderful but super cramped)

  12. Went tonight and really enjoyed our large cheese pie. Quick warm up in the oven after the drive home and the slices were excellent. The dough has the right amount of savoriness (read: there is actually a bit of savoriness, it's not bland or sweet). I'd say it's the most NYC-like in the area, and probably the best for the style. I really like Wiseguy too but their pies can be a bit on the heavier side, more of a substantial crust.

I'd go a lot if it was closer. As for the lack of crowds, it's a concept that would probably work really well in the city, with the higher transplant rate and more people who think a lot about their casual food. But I know Jon and Ankur aren't wanting to pay high transplant city rents :-) Or maybe they just need to get people in Rockville addicted to this NYC pie. They certainly did that with their VPN pizzas at CS.

We were the only people in there at lunchtime today.

That's a crying shame - this is probably the closest to a New York pie you can get in the DC area. But the Sicilian might actually be the better slice. Chicken and meatball parm subs were great too.

Thanks for the reminder - I'll stop in tomorrow. Maybe the summer is tough in that location. Richard Montgomery starting the school year in a few weeks could help.

  14. There's an Ale House on the Pike in Rockville too, by Congressional Plaza. I've been once, and have been to Ale House locations in Central Florida too. It's basically a Chili's with more beer and without the SW influence - or a breastaurant without the breasts. Probably an option for people who feel Matchbox is too poncey and pricey. WYSIWYG. Literally, there are a lot of pictures on the menus.

I don't understand where people get their money.

Federal disclosure forms filed by the Trump committee Saturday show that it paid Serrano’s firm, ProActive Communications, a total of $30,000 for “communications consulting.”

Not bad for a few weeks of "consulting" work :)
