  1. Please respond by 5pm on Monday Feb. 6th if you are on the WL and have not responded yet.  After that we will have open signups to get us to the magic number which I am going to close by 5pm on Wednesday Feb. 8th.

As a note, everyone please be certain (as much as you can be) about attending on the 1st as Tom is going to be closing the restaurant based upon the response.

If, and I mean IF, we get the numbers for a second night then we can play the swap game.

I have a question. I am on the waitlist for Tuesday night (as a matter of fact, I am first on the waitlist) and have responded to the possibility of the second night to cover myself and my wish to participate in what sounds to be an excellent dining adventure. What happens if for some reason, someone drops out of the Tuesday night dinner and I am suddenly elevated to the esteemed ranks of the first nighters? There now exists the possibility that the second night will be short 1 or 2 fressers...does the list now become open once again for new people? Do I now have to show up two consecutive nights at Corduroy (which is not a fate worse than death but might be a bit deflating to the wallet), do I have to suggest someone to take my place on the second night list? Ohmigawd, I'm so confused....

  2. On your way down Van Dorn there is an Italian place called Savino's which has interesting pizza, said to be made by and reflect their Morrocan chef.  Worth a shot.

But I second Sthitch's mention of Atlantis--good pizza, which is rare in these parts.  I've only had the pizza there, but I'd bet the hot sandwiches and comfort foods would be good there too--it just looks like that kind of place.

Savino's wasn't impressive the last time we dined there. Nothing stands out in my memory that would make me go back as a special ocassion. Would be all right for a casual night out.

Atlantis has very good Gyro's and other sandwiches in addition to the good pizza.

  3. Does anyone know if Mr. Shinmoto is still working in this area? I hesitate to ask the people still at the restaurant because of the implicit criticism that they might perceive.

Don't be concerned about asking, we asked Steve (the owner)...Mr. Shinmoto is still somewhere in the area (or was when we asked which was just after he left). Steve has made every effort to ensure the food is as good or better than when Mr. S. was there.

    Konnichi-wah...

  4. No need to order any for me - I have a similar item (called beginners chopsticks or some such).  They were handed out at the end of a Shirley Fong-Torres Wokwiz "I can't believe I ate my way through Chinatown" tour in San Francisco

I've seen you use chopsticks...I'm ordering two pairs for you...

  5. Grover is spot on with Yamazoto. (Caveat, I haven't been in about a year) I used to live in the neighborhood and stopped in on a regular basis. Wife and I were very happy with the sushi/sashimi and we have been sushi bar denizens in several major cities. They didn't have the thai when we used to go there, but if they've kept up their general quality I would have no hesitation ordering it.

While Yamazato lost their senior sushi chef, the sous-chef took over and there was no noticeable difference. The addition of Thai food only enhanced the Japanese side of the menu. I had some drunken noodles the last time I was there and they were some of the best I've ever had.

  6. A woman after my own (and Miss Manners') heart.  I inherited my mother's silver, which has long been discontinued, and found the ice cream forks (sporks?) at Replacements, Inc. for $40 EACH.  I passed.

Grover and I spent almost 8 hours in Replacements. A wonderful place. You wouldn't believe the goodies (and dreck) you can find there. No trip to Greensboro, NC is complete without a stop there.

  7. Last evening Grover and I ate at La Piazza. For those of you who don't know, La Piazza is a small Italian restaurant across from the Braddock Road metro station. All of their pasta is made in house so it's always fresh. Grover and I both decided to eat lightly (upcoming dinner at Dino tonight) so we had the meat filled ravioli in meat sauce. Dinner started with a salad of mixed greens with onion and a bit of Italian tomato accompanied by very good garlic bread. The ravioli were about 3" in diameter, filled with a very good beef and mild spice filling and were covered with a meaty red sauce. The sauce was so good that both Grover and I ended by mopping up the remaining sauce with the garlic bread. For $24 for two, a filling, satisfying, good tasting dinner.

We talked to the owner and he's planning on having a two dinners and a bottle of wine (red or white) special on Monday's and Tuesdays for $29.95. According to him, that's salad, garlic bread and any item from the menu. I'm not a big fan of the 'twofers' but the food should overcome any shortcomings of the wine.

  8. Any suggestions on where to buy a pig? A whole pig, that is, in the 60 pound range, and fresh, not frozen. Northern Virginia preferred (Falls Church area would be great, but I'm not holding my breath). I'm planning a pig roast this spring, and perhaps others if the first goes well.

Good brining recipes would also be welcome

Don't want to seem to be pushing Springfield Butchers but I think if you give them a call they can get you anything from a suckling pig to something big enough to require 24 hours of roasting over an open pit...

  9. The +1 will be car-ing it in and picking me up from Metro, so we can pickup two more folks from whichever Metro folks think would be closest - I'm afraid I've checked WMATA and it has been most unhelpful.

Make sure you PM goldenticket, she's coordinating all the riders/ridees (sure hope that's a good word). I'm sure there will be enough rides for everyone who is car-less.

If we can all agree on Braddock Rd. Metro station, Grover and I can meet all carpoolers and carpoolees there and act as guide to Han Sung Oak. For dinner at 7:00, I'd suggest getting to Braddock Road Metro around 6:30. PM goldenticket and let her know if you need a ride or want to follow Grover and I there.

  10. It is not hyper over the specific question, just some remembering of things that helped to bring this site to be.

That's the problem with coming in in the middle, no legacy knowlege. That's why I like to ask those questions. Sometimes I get a lot more answer than I want, but I always learn something. Thanks Mike.

  11. Don could make this The Don Rockwell Society for Eating, Drinking, and all around Debauchery, charge society membership fees, and then according to your level of giving you get into the events!

Until that time, a lottery seems pretty fair and easy to me.

Hmm, pass the absinthe, I believe I'll sit here on the porch and whup the peasants and do some minor debauchery (is there such a thing as minor debauchery? and why is everyone getting so hyper over a question? Boy-howdy, you should see the questions I could have asked)
