  1. This is one of my favorite things to make at home!  It is almost identical to shabu shabu.  They actually make little electronic hot pots for this purpose only.  My appliance obsessed roommate actually bought one.  I haven't been able to find a Chinese restaurant that offers it and I hope that another post will enlighten both of us.  I guess shabu shabu at Sushi Tono would be the closest thing.

If you want to make it, drop me a line and I'll be happy to share our recipe.  I think you've given me an idea for tonight!

You might also try the shabu-shabu or the sukiyaki at Yamazoto in Alexandria. I'd put both of those up against any restaurant in the area.

Unless I'm misreading, what New Big Wong and TemptAsian are serving is not the same kind of hot pot that MeMc is asking for. As the quoted article said, what she's looking for is more like "Chinese fondue", and what NBW and TA have is pre-cooked food in a casserole dish.

I have not seen this "fondue" style of Chinese hot pot in the DC area.

I have seen hot pots at Huong Que in Eden Center as well. A bit of a haul (which is why we go to Yamazoto) but worth the time and effort.

I have almost never seen this served in restaurants in the States, or at least not on the East Coast.  I guess it tends to be such a homey thing that restaurants don't bother to do it.  In Taiwan at least, the restaurants that do serve it tend to be buffet style (one pot on the table, huge bar of raw food and sauce fixing's).

I've had hot pots in Taipei at the Mongolian barbecue around the corner from the Hotel Baguio (another food story for later). A HUGE buffet with rabbit and venison and beef and pork and lamb and other things you probably don't want to know about and tons of veggies. Lots of sauces on the table and great soup at the end when all the "solid" ingredients are gone.

  2. Would I need reservations?  Where is it?

So far I have reservations at Brassierie Flo for the 24th

How did you like Bistro Flo? It is a favorite of my wife and me. We try to get there every trip to Paris as well as to La H'uitre (The Oyster in case my Francais is incorrect). Small but easily found restaurant with excellent oysters (per the name), clams and shrimp.

  3. This is your official notice to keep an eye on the board for an announcement in the next few days regarding our next two events.  They will both be stellar dinners highlighting two of DC's most talented chefs.

One event will have a high pricepoint.  We are still working out the details of the other.  Although it won't be as expensive, it will not be a cheap night so start saving your greenbacks.  Both are sure to be meals you will not forget.

So start your speculating.  If you know the details about one of the dinners please don't spoil the fun and announce what it is before we are ready.  Half the fun of these dinners is sitting back and having you try to figure out where our next gastronomical adventure will take us. :)

    Any dates and hints yet?

  4. One thing that has not been addressed..Why one rides the segway into an establishment ...While your standing on the segway you take no more room then then if you left it out side..if you dismount and try to bring it inside , you would be like pushing or pulling a  handtruck or wheelbarrel..So what would you have me do the latter and yell "Gangway" or the former and just say "Excuse me" and glide in...That is first if I was allowed in with the segway in the first place. I can glide one mile an hour or the top speed of 12.5  My choice..I read all the treads here it still seems most of you still don't understsnd a segway, some consider it a MotorVehicle, some a toy some a mobility device (which it is) Some of you are hardheaded against it from the start and will never consider the good points.  And lastly some I think are just jealous and would like to have a segway. So post negative remarks ..And some are resonable to the various uses of a new technology be it for the disable or ablebodied person. It' here and adjust to it . Just like 100 years ago the Horse and Wagon people had to adjust to the Automobile

The Picture is myself on the left at Rockerfeller Center on an XT unit and a tourest tring out a Demo ( Nice young lady from Canada)

I'm curious as to why you'd want to take it into a restaurant at all? You're not a PWD, you're able-bodied, you wouldn't drive your pickup truck into a restaurant lobby, why would you ride a motorized vehicle (and by definition, that's what a Segway is) into one? Why not just lock it up outside (like people with bicycles seem to do) and walk through the door. If you have a medical reason, fine. If you have a self esteem reason, not so fine. Just because you classify it as a mobility device, I could apply that label to motorized skateboards, Ferraris, and probably HUMVEEs. I don't think that means I can park them in some restaurant coatroom, or worse, take them to the table with me. I have nothing against Segways or any other "new" device, I just have problems with people who seem to think they can flaunt their toys and make others feel envious.

  5. Does anyone know how long the "cafeteria/lunchroom/dining hall" in the church meeting hall basement at Daddy Grace's Church (1800 6th St. NW) has been in existence? For soul food, it's hard to find a better place to eat. The fried trout at Flavors is a pale imitation (even though it's great).

Edited to add address and official name of the church: United House of Prayer for All People.

  6. Here is a clue - and the rest is up to you. (hint: look down the left hand sidebar.)

Hmmmmmph!!! (you get to do that when you get officially old)...not much of a clue when it yields the following:

    DSFRemoteUI error '800a000d'

    Type mismatch

    D:\WWWROOT\DOH\NEWS_ROOM_DSF\../DSF_RemoteUI/DSF_RemoteUI_inc.asp, line 143

You think we broke their database?

  7. I think I made a mistake and was given some bad information. It looks like the Flying Scotsman is still alive and kicking. Their phone and website are still up. I will swing by afternoon and try a pint on my way home.

My apologies for spreading second had information, i can no longer trust my friends.

We're talking about the Scottish restaurant on King Street about a block off of Washington St. Is there another Scottish restaurant in the area?

  8. That would be Kenny's Pit Barbecue.  Kenny sold it a few years ago, and while they still have all the traditional pit barbecue items, they also do some Korean barbecue, which I haven't tried.  I've only eaten there once or twice since it changed hands, but I enjoyed it.

Thanks, couldn't remember the name...from what I remember the time I ate there, the Korean bbq is very good...(kalbi on order...yummm)...the 'regular' bbq is also very good.

  9. Rustico is slated for an opening in February. I would say on the later side of that estimate. The chef is awesome, the GM is a greatguy who has worked for the company for quite some time. Should be aces across the board when it opens.

The restaurant that was going to open before Vermilion...glad to hear it's finally going to open. Had long talks a long time ago about Rustico when it was supposed to be in Del Ray where the Caboose is now..

  10. Um, where else would you go other than JG's backyard?  Hate to be a wet blanket, but it's a vast wasteland out there.  Get thee to Lexington, NC, or if you must be near a metropolitan area, to Allen & Son in Chapel Hill.

You overlooked Stamey's in Greensboro...barbecue to (almost) die for..

  11. DR Roadtrip?

I am serious about this....would anyone be intrested in a roadtrip this spring where a group of us hit 4-5 of the self reported "best" BBQ places in Virginia. This would be a one day excursion, armed with empty stomachs, maps, cameras, a DD, and a full tank of gas, we take one for the team and truely discover great BBQ within a 2 hour drive of DC.

    What say you.....

    Don Rocks Pig Patrol!

Wouldn't take a lot of talking to convince me to join in...Rocklands and the Pit Barbecue on Duke Street beside the Dunkin Donuts, (three Tums apiece) and then onto Richmond and Williamsburg...(burp!!! pardon me! :) )

  12. I have always been partial to Pierce's Pitt BBQ in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Although on our next trip down to Virginia Beach, we might have to swing through Richmond to give this place a try.

Bills is right off of I95 South at the Braves Stadium. When you see the stadium, plan on getting off...it's directly across the street from the stadium..
