Tweaked
The 5x5 Project is a 16 week public art project being held across the District during the fall (2014), and sponsored by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH). Five curators have chosen 25 artists (listed in the "Curators" drop-down menu) to participate in the second edition of this biennial event (5 x 5 2012). We stumbled across Glenn Kaino's "Bridge," a wonderful sculpture, while heading down to The Yards Friday night. Housed in an old, gutted Department of Transportation Naval warehouse at 270 Tingey Street SE, the piece is comprised of suspended "slats" forming a wavy bridge. The slats are contemporary arm casts of Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith, known for his iconic "Black Power" salute on the medal stand at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. We fortunately caught the piece as the sun was setting.
