Here's some more information about this recording on Wikipedia.

Crosby sung this very unselfishly - he let Bowie (who is a falsetto) have the melody during the verses while he (Crosby, a natural baritone) sang more softly in the harmony (this is as it should be). When the refrains occurred, the two singers equaled out.
