Just completely redid our entire kitchen from studs out - if you use a wok, check out BlueStar ranges, locally made in PA.  If anyone watches "Chopped" those are the ranges they use.  There is a 25,000 BTU burner in the front center which boils water in minutes.  All the burners have an insert that pops out by hand and conveniently fits a wok.  You can custom-order knobs, trim, door panel etc, which was a great addition to our home.  The custom color is really cool.  The Platinum range is worth the extra $$ and we have 6 burners with an interchangeable griddle and grill as well.  It is awesome and I prefer it to some of the other high end ranges - it is simple and does what it is supposed to do, a virtual workhorse.

Range vents above 450 CFM, often require installation of a "make-up" air vent.  In new home and retrofits it is usually a code issue.  We have a 1200 CFM fan which is certainly overkill, but having gone from a very inefficient downdraft originally, which could not do much of anything except interfere with the efficiency of the cooktop, I did not want to under-size the hood and have to redo it later.  For comparison's sake, your bathroom fan is likely 100 CFM or less.  650 CFM is substantial, on 1200, which we rarely if ever use, you can dry your hair and blast the scents of your cooking all over your neighborhood.

BlueStar is great! Did our remodel about 13 yrs ago. Still a workhorse, and still love it. And recommended if doesn't use a wok, too!

Jody Taylor’s Facebook post from 2018 announcing the closing.

It was terrific that the Auger family sold him the Rooster for $1.00.   Jody was it’s guy.  He holds the longest memories.

Evidently starting in the 1970’s Blacky Auger opened a slew of bar/pubs, predominantly along L Strreet, each one with a part of their name being Black.  In the 80’s I vividly recall Jody even as I didn’t know him.  His handlebar mustache was prominent and frankly after work I too often was at one or another bar.  Jody at some point was the he GM for all of them. So great he inherited the last remaining one and carried it through to the end of the lease.   Jody’s post above has sweet memories

I can't recall all the places- help me out? Of course I remember Blackie's on 22nd, and Lulu's (fun times!) on M, but I'm blanking out on the other places! I worked next store to Black Rooster (in that building under construction) for 15 yrs. Rooster was definitely our after-work happy hour place and made for some nice lunches as well.

I haven’t  forgotten about all who are interested. Im waiting to hear back from Sfgolina on details of our event. I want to give first availability to our members, ( up to 15) then if there extra spots , fill in with others who are interested. Fair enough?

sounds good! Just waiting to hear more info!

  4. Where do you live? We donated many magazines to Friends of the Library (in Montgomery County.) There used to be a location in the basement of the Wheaton Library, but since that location it is now under construction they have found a much larger space in the old downtown Silver Spring Library. Cookbooks and cooking magazines are usually in high demand.

  5. Ktmoomau, Sam's and Costco are not the same-can't quite tell you why, but give Costco some time to figure out what works for you before you decide it is not right for you. For us, the % back more than pays for the membership cost. We are a two-person household and do a majority of shopping at Costco. Here's my stream of thoughts on what we buy:

We buy the romaine lettuce (5 per bag) and usually grill them for a dinner side. We almost always buy the large bag of broccoli, and use it to roast and eat as a dinner side, but then when we've had it a few too many days, we make soup to freeze. Sometimes we'll buy brussels sprouts or asparagus, and again add to soup what doesn't get eaten right away. We'll also sometimes buy mixed salad lettuce and carrots. We buy campari tomatoes, apples, bread (freeze the 2nd loaf) oranges, baby eggplants, mini potatoes, occasionally other fruits as recipes call for them, and bottled water, toilet paper and paper towels. What have I forgotten? Oh yes, deli turkey (we freeze what is not currently being used) same goes for the carver ham, which is quite good btw, sausages when on special purchase, and other oddities like jars of guava and mango (don't laugh, they are great for making smoothies) Also great for making smoothies are the frozen fruit and of course the fresh produce like carrots, kale, etc. I also purchase clothing, gloves and shoes, as well as books and sometimes DVD's. Cape Cod reduced fat kettle chips are often on sale, and that is our go-to brand. Nuts, as someone else mentioned, we keep in the freezer. Kirkland brand allergy meds (nasal spray and pills) are a great deal and seasonally on special, and even when not on sale are a great deal. Vitamins, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Lawn bags, Gingerade Kombucha, which is my favorite, and of course the occasional impulse buys from the tasting stations.  There are many more things we used to purchase but they have stopped carrying, but I still look out for them "just in case!" I'm sure I'm forgetting something...but if you have a FoodSaver, it helps for freezing extras, and if you don't, they do sell them there :) Oh yes, I did forget -- tires for our car!

  6. On Tuesdays, one of the specials at the cafeteria at National Geographic is Pho, and I've been meaning to try it, but haven't had the chance until today. It's very basic, but very good. The broth is incredibly rich, not fatty, and not sweet like I've had at a lot of other places. The quality of the meat is better than I've had at some places in the 'burbs--it was incredibly tender and flavorful.

So if you find yourself stuck in midtown or golden triangle on a Tuesday, you might just want to give it a try.

We have routinely gotten birthday cakes from Pastries by Randolph.  raspberry and lemon fillings in particular have been very tasty.  Ms. RBH loves the dark chocolate mousse cake for her b-day.

Pastries by Randolph is exceptional. And Don, I'm surprised that Woodmoor Bakery did not come to mind for you. They are still in business, still in Woodmoor, still exceptional.

I tried to go today.  Sign says it is open 7 am to 4 pm.  Walked in a little before 10 am.  "We open at 11."  But your sign...  "We're here at 7 but we open at 11."

(They have a breakfast menu posted... I wasn't in the mood to argue with someone who clearly didn't want to serve me. Mr. BLB and I have been talking about having a lunch date to revisit it and the memories of our days living in Dupont--I think we'll head to CF Folks instead...)

They used to be open for breakfast - probably wasn't economical for them to do it anymore. That neighborhood is losing tenants with all the building tear downs and construction. Plus WaWa across the street, I'm sure it was too much to compete with that. Quality hasn't changed, though, so you should definitely try to get back there. Funny thing, CF Folks has a similar "soup nazi" vibe to it...😏
