Ericandblueboy
Looking to buy a new digital camera with at least 30x optical zoom. Consumer Research recommends Canon Powershot SX40 HS. I'm looking to spend around $400. Any thoughts on the Canon or other cameras? Going to Ireland later this year. I want to be able to photograph those elusive leprechauns, unicorns, and find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
lovehockey
I can't give you a specific recommendation (sorry!) but a good resource is Digital Photography Review, at www.dpreview.com. It includes a buying guide with feature search, and you can compare the Canon SX40 to others in the 30x optical zoom (or more) category.
DavidO
I don't know how helpful this is, but I recently got the Canon SX230 HS (which is a 14x zoom) and so far I really like it (the pics from it look a lot closer to the pics from my D40 DSLR than was true of the last point and shoot I had). Of course the temptation is to zoom in on the kids indoors-- only to realize just because you can zoom in doesn't mean you have enough light to get a good shot.
