  1. Let's say that someone who is prone to motion sickness and is traveling with an 8 year old who may or may not have the same tendency was planning a trip on the Auto Train and wanted to have a light lunch before boarding. (You can turn in your car as early as 11:30 am and they start letting passengers aboard at 2:30 PM, the train doesn't depart until 4 pm.) It looks like Lorton Station is nearby and that Pane E Vino got warm, if mixed, reviews here previously. Fireside Grill is not open for lunch on our departure day. Is there anywhere else I should be considering? Thanks!
  2. I'm thinking about my options of getting to/from DC/NYC - has anyone rented a car in one city, and dropped it off in the other? Amtrak round-trip between the two cities seems to be $88 for economy tickets, or $176 round-trip. Renting a car one-way appears to be about $100 a day (that would be renting at one airport, and dropping it off at another - for example, renting at Reagan, and dropping off at Kennedy). That's a lot of money for a car rental, *but* if you can do what you need to do in one day, and get the car returned within 24 hours, it isn't much more expensive than taking the train. Are there any drawbacks to this that I'm unaware of? I'd like to drop off some things in New York, so a one-way car rental, followed by taking Amtrak on the return trip, would be an ideal situation for me. Having never done this before, I'm wondering if there are any pitfalls that I'm unaware of (tolls, for example - I'd need to remember to bring my EZ-Pass). Thanks in advance if you have any opinions or insight - I thought a one-way drop-off would be more expensive than this, and perhaps it is.
  3. Haven't used these "Help Needed" threads much in the past but thought to give it a try today. I'm going to be in NYC later this week and will have about two hours free after a meeting to get to Penn Station and a train back to DC. Will be in Midtown (either central Midtown or Midtown East). Where would people recommend stopping to get some great takeaway to have for dinner on the train later since, well, can't stomach the fare that Amtrak sells? Can be most any cuisine but something that will stay for a few hours that can be boxed/packaged up. Hoping for something especially good, interesting (doesn't have to be a restaurant; maybe a great food market of some kind?). Would need it to be east of 8th between 50th and 30th. Here's hoping. And, Thank you!
  4. This tweet pretty much says it all. It's $24 to park at Union Station for 12-24 hours, and there's no validation for Amtrak. If you park for a partial day, there isn't much relief, as 2-12 hours will set you back $20. The official web page with current rates is here. If you take a weekend trip to New York or Philadelphia (or wherever), leaving Friday afternoon, and returning Sunday evening, you're going to be shelling out a whopping $68 for parking (*) Depending on where you live, taking Uber or a taxi will be both cheaper and easier. Remember this post is here - it could save you a lot of money in the future. (*) Please note that the website says, "Lost Ticket (flat rate) $24.00," so if you're gone for longer than a day, make sure not to lose your ticket, or you'll be costing the parking garage a lot of money.
  5. You see, *this* is a proper venue for Cuisine Solutions, and it would not surprise me at all if they produced that meal. If that's the case, there's no reason the Jerk Chicken shouldn't have been of at least decent quality.
