Toku Japanese and Asian Cuisine (Formerly Sala Thai), a Rebranding of the U Street Sala Thai

Recommended Posts

Lady KN and I had tickets for the Mavericks at Lincoln Theater, so we were looking for a pre-concert dinner in the area. Lots to choose from, including Ben's Chili Bowl, and we decided on Toku. Turned out to be a pretty good choice.

We ordered a bottle of chardonnay to kick things off, then went to town on the sushi menu. The specials included fatty hamachi belly,  fatty tuna belly, and fatty salmon belly, so we went all in on those. Added to that were plenty of nigiri and rolls to keep us happy for an hour or so. I ordered tonkatsu, the breaded pork cutlet.

The fatty bellies were outstanding, generously cut, and delicious. The rest of the nigiri sushi was good, if cut a little on the small side. Maybe I'm used to the larger cut of the mostly Korean sushi places in the suburbs. The rolls were quite good, especially the shrimp tempura roll. And the tonkatsu was absolutely delicious, fried to a perfect, non-greasy crunch.

A 9-oz pitcher of sake followed. All was good with the world.
