Jonny told me the other day that, while they weren't ready to share a date, "you'll be wearing shorts."

I told Jonny and Ankur that I would arrange a DR gathering as the date gets closer. We can pack the place, right?

Sunday, June 14th according to Store Reporter. I'll talk with them soon about a DR gathering.

The "tower" at Clyde's is half-priced during happy hours. It has a different name at each Clyde's -- Lighthouse at Gallery Place, Ocean Liner at Chevy Chase -- but during happy hours, they are half-priced. Best deal in town.

Also some locations you can get at the tables, others only at the bar. And some locations have odd happy hours, including later at night. Do not assume that just because they did something for you at one location they can/will do it at another.

  3. My company had our holiday party this year at Sequoia. It was.... fine. Considering the money we spent, we're wondering if there are better options.

The biggest limiting factor is size - we had 250+ this year, and expect to climb closer to 300 this year. Who can handle events of this size and still put out food that will please? Would prefer not to do it in a hotel ballroom, though a hotel restaurant would probably be acceptable.

I think I may have heard about this occurring at previous dinners, where  the service staff (volunteers) took social liberties to an unacceptable level, and hence adding the formal application. There is a level of service to be expected at these dinners I assume as well, but I think as long as you are respectful and know the basics, that should be sufficient. That's my opinion.

I used to volunteer, and about 5 years ago they said I couldn't volunteer anymore, because I didn't have recent fine dining employment. Unless they've relaxed the volunteer screening, most of us aren't eligible.

You're welcome, and thanks for bringing the supplies and the tablet!

BTW, anyone need masa harina?  I've got lots and lots of leftovers, more than I'll use in any reasonable amount of time ( the Milk Bar corn cookies use some in that recipe).

I thought about it after we got into the car and headed out. If you were closer, I'd say yes, but it's not expensive stuff.

I think it really says all grocery store hummus suck.  You can do better making it yourself.  I've never like any store bought hummus, including Sabra and Cava.  My favorite hummus is from Zahav/Dizengoff, which I understand may be available for purchase at a Wholefood in Phlly.

There's a Dizengoff stand WITHIN the Whole Foods by the museums, but I'm not sure if they actually package the stuff and sell on the shelves.

Okay, I've read this interesting article. I'm also reading a book, "What If?" by Randall Munroe, subtitled "Serious scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions."

Comparing the human brain to a computer, Munroe says: "Humans, for example, are probably still far better at looking at a picture of a scene and guessing what just happened."

Any parent could look at this picture for five seconds, and figure out what most likely happened, whereas a computer, even the computers of tomorrow, might take a million-billion-trillion calculations to reach the same conclusion (granted, that might take less than five seconds, but you get what I mean):

It will be a century after my death when computers finally figure out that Brooks Robinson was the greatest defensive baseball player that ever lived, but I already know, just as surely as I know the sun will rise in the morning.

Munroe's webcomic, XKCD, is one of the best things on the Internet.

  8. I saw "Snowpiercer" once when it was first released. Though I had some issues with the technical logistics, I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and thought the acting was spectacular. Considering that the director spoke little English, it was an impressive directorial effort. Have not seen, nor plan to see, "Parasite", as I understand that it crosses into typical Korean violent slasher/horror territory, which I do not care for.
