Anyone been here lately? Thinking of going for the gintonic June thing. But last time we went, it was sad, for pandemic reasons. Wondering if menus and ordering have returned to normal, or if it is still QR menus and food runners only, and NO BAR SEATS.

We sat at the bar there a couple of weeks ago.  Paper menus are back.  All seemed like it was in the before times.

So,  besides there being a pandemic lately, I’ve been mostly holed up in the VA suburbs and haven’t been into DC for much at all for several years. We happen to be going to The Gibson for a release party for a gin I had a hand in developing (Mt. Defiance Gin Nouveau) on the 28th. We’ll be kicked out for the next seating at 8 and would like to eat nearby. I’m a bit overwhelmed just looking at Google Maps, and I figure you all know much more than most, so I’m asking for your help.

Requirements: 5-6 adults, not crazy expensive, a couple of non-adventurous eaters, more alcohol is rarely a bad thing, 8-8:30 seating, safe walking distance from U and 14th.

In my novice Google search, I came up with Lupo Verde, Lupo Pizza, Estadio, Gypsy Kitchen.

What thoughts do you all have? Thanks tons in advance!!

In our experience Estadio never disappoints.  We have a subscription to Studio Theatre so we get to Estadio about 5 times a year.  Lupo Pizza is very good, but the space is rather small.

  3. It looks like Jon Krinn has stepped away from Clarity.

The last seven years have been truly gratifying, demanding, and immensely educational, and now I’m sharing with you that my chapter at Clarity ended in January. Every guest, and everyone that worked with me, afforded me an amazing experience in too many ways to describe. I cherish all the relationships made, and what we achieved together during the pandemic was an epic community effort of creative resiliency.

To start my next chapter, I am pursuing some diverse activities around food, drinks, and active health, which I will detail in upcoming posts. I can’t overstate my appreciation for our journey, and I hope we continue to evolve together.

    I’ll be around.

I can't believe no one's mentioned the Post Pub, on L St, across from the Washington Post. It's gotta be one of the darkest places I've ever been in. I hear that now that Stoney's is closed, they've decided to open on Saturday's to try and pick up some of their business.

Although it closed in the middle of 2020, the Post Pub appears to have reopened.

  5. This was posted on Nextdoor yesterday, which appears to be a copy of an email sent out from the restaurant.  I think you need a Nextdoor account to see this.  I found nothing about this on their social media.

DEAR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND PATRONS With heavy hearts we announce Assaggi’s doors will close 12/25/21.

Assaggi is open through 12/24/21. Please dine with us and to toast the spirit of the season and the outstanding culinary and professional service team led by CHEF FRANCESCO PESCATORE and MANAGER DUSAN MILONJIC.

GRATITUDE To our long-term regulars, thank you always for your steadfast patronage. To patrons, who found us while looking for a welcoming place closer to home during COVID, grazie mille. You are the silver lining reinforcing that upscale dining has a place in McLean.

To have carried on for you and with you was to be our pleasure.

OUR STORY When three McLean couples reopened a shuttered Assaggi Osteria, in 2017, our dream was to provide McLean with a fine dining neighborhood restaurant. With a talented team in place by 2019, Assaggi came together. Chef Francesco Pescatore and Manager Dusan Milonjic took the lead to craft a welcoming restaurant with consistent high-quality food, fine wine, and stellar service that continues today.

While the restaurant sector and Assaggi are regaining footing, a steady post-pandemic recovery requires realistic terms for a lease and a lessor/lessee partnership. In recent weeks, our efforts to negotiate a reasonable lease extension with our landlord, Georges Tawil, McLean Square Associates, were not successful, which led to today’s difficult announcement.

OUR GRATEFUL HEARTS WISH ALL THE BEST OF THE SEASON AND A BRIGHT 2022

I don't want to speak for anyone else, but not only do I remember the e-mail address I signed up with, but it's still my primary address.  Is there a way to change passwords, though, in the new system?  I've never been able to find that.

Go to your handle on the upper right and click on the down arrow - go to settings - there is a line for your password and a link that says change.

We've got some news to share about Copa Kitchen & Bar. We're closing our doors and serving our last brunch on Sunday November 7th. We have had such a good time bringing you our Spanish inspired tapas and being a part of the Ballston Quarter family over the last two years. We want to thank every customer who has dined with us, watched games with us, followed our journey on social media or enjoyed a happy hour with us. We'd like to extend a special thanks to the customers who have supported us (and all restaurants) through the pandemic.

We would love to see your faces one last time during our last week of service. Make a reservation and come see us for dinner or brunch. You've got four opportunities to visit us for brunch before we close on November 7th. So make those reservations fast, as they will likely fill quickly. Cuídate amigos!

Lady Kibbee and I had tickets for The Mavericks at the Lincoln Theater, so we had dinner at The Smith, right down U Street less than a block away. Our normal Izakaya Seki was not booking reservations after 5:30, so we decided on The Smith at 6:00 on a Friday evening.

I don't like chains but the menu was Lady KN-friendly (that means lots of seafood and chardonnay) and there are only seven locations between New York, Washington DC, and Chicago. So we gave it a try.

The atmosphere was reminiscent of The Oceanaire or McCormick and Schmick's, which was a reasonably good sign, so we grabbed a table and tucked in. First round was the Royale, a medium ($57) seafood tower with oysters, shrimp cocktail, and spicy salmon tartare. It was very good, and since we are big fans of oysters, the oysters on the Royale were a hit. They were shucked perfectly, not a shell shard anywhere, they slipped off the shell into the mouth with ease. We could have stopped there and just ordered oysters, and believe me, we're talking about going back just for oysters. And that salmon tartare was delicious.

Then came the mains. Wife had the salmon platter and declared it delicious, and I had the squid ink tagliatelle, with shrimp and calamari, and it was surprisingly sensational. I don't want to overstate this, but coming from a mini-chain kitchen, there was an obvious attentiveness and a decided lack of indifference that some chains are known for. This is not such that kind of chain. We happily noted that our future ventures to the Lincoln Theater would include a visit to The Smith.

We have been to the 2 Smith outposts in DC and most of the locations in NYC and they never disappoint.  In fact, we were at F street yesterday just for drinks.  They also are in Chicago.
