Yeah, today was brutal. I walked across the terrace from Tysons 1, and the wind was bitter.

Are you in 1800 Tysons Blvd? If so, I also work in that building on occasion....

yep, the home of Founding Farmers. 😂 Still haven't tried it. I'm here a couple days a week, otherwise downtown at Metro Center.

Tomorrow that plaza in front of Earl's will not be a fun place.

Lunch today at Earl's Kitchen + Bar in Tysons was surprisingly good for a Tysons lunch spot. The place is large, bar-forward, sort of like a GAR place. Instead of a food-for-the-masses kind of menu, it has some interesting wrinkles like a truly good sushi roll menu and a poke bowl that my companions both raved about. I had the swordfish tacos, which were delicious if slightly messy to eat. The burgers coming out of the kitchen looked substantial.

The heritage is Canadian but the menu is anything but. Definitely worth a try among the wasteland of lunch options in Tysons proper.

Thanks -- might give it a try when the temps moderate and a walk from 1800 won't be sheer torture.

Interestingly, The Fractured Prune goes on the list of Oldest Restaurants in the Baltimore Area, having opened its Ocean City location in 1976.

Looks like Crofton has closed, but Glendale AZ (!) is alive and well.

BTW, we had a Prune out here off 606 for a while, but it's long gone too. Think they did reasonably well at least for a while.

According to the Prune website they have "Licensed Stores" and "Legacy Stores." Anyone know what that means? The Legacy Stores are listed on the website but there's no link to the menu for those stores.

"How do you want that shake: Martin & Lewis, or Amos & Andy?"

"I don’t think Buddy Holly is much of a waiter, maybe we should have sat in Marilyn Monroe’s section." "Which one? There are two Monroes." "No there’s not that is Marilyn Monroe, that is Mamie Van Doren and I don’t see Jayne Mansfield so she must have the night off or something."

BTW, Vincent is the brother of Vic Vega (Mr Blonde) from Reservoir Dogs.

The blueberry scones are worth the extra notch on my belt! I did not have a chance to try Lady M, on account I was there very early, but will revisit it the next time I am in town. There are times where a splurge both figuratively, and both literally are on order.

Oh I noticed the blueberry scones. Saving them for the beginning of March, after my bootcamp winter challenge is over. 😀

Does anyone have any good recommendations along I-85 from Durham, NC to Richmond.  I'll be driving that route after Christmas, during the afternoon.

BBQ, diners, I'm pretty much game for anything that doesn't involve a huge side trip.

Pretty arid area for good food. It's been a few years since I made that drive, and both of the BBQ places I've tried north of Durham on 85 have closed. There's a Smithfield's Chicken n Bar-B-Q right off 85 in Henderson. It's an NC chain. Basic Eastern NC cue and fried chicken. Good portions.

There are probably some solid local eateries in Henderson.

I went here a lot because I live a block away.  Their "Cali Girl" sandwich used to be on delicious fresh milk bread with a great runny egg, until about a month ago, when it was on clearly delivered bread with an egg-mcmuffin type hard egg.  Gross.  I suspect when Marjorie left to St. Anselm the money went with her.

The last comment on the PopVille story noted that quality went down when she left. Sounds like the free market has spoken.

I have received word that Lady M will be opening in the Taste of Urbanspace Food Hall, tomorrow. It is times like this, I wish there was a bullet train directly into Tysons Galleria.

Damn. Back before we got a Maison Kayser around the corner here in DC, I used to hit the 40th St location when I visited the NY office and always ogled the wares in the window at Lady M a couple doors down the block (this is across from Bryant Park). If those things taste half as good as they look....

  9. Don -- I owe you a massive debt. Thanks to your mention of the findagrave website, I've just gotten details about my double first cousin, once removed, David E. Wells, who was killed in Italy in WW2. In about five seconds I learned more about him than I had known for the past 50 years.

He was my dad's favorite cousin. My dad learned of his death while serving in the Pacific. A letter he wrote to his cousin was returned  stamped "RETURN TO SENDER -- ADDRESSEE DECEASED." Ah, bureaucracy.

A Taste of Urbanspace is  off to soft start with 5 concepts ranging from pizza, to Southern style Biscuits, ice cream , Japanese comfort food, to Lao cuisine.  This is a starting point, with the plan to open more stalls. I have been actively following all stalls on the INSTA, and I can say I have rarely seen so much love and excitement for the opening of a food hall. Mclean holds a special place in my life on account it was the first place I arrived to back in 1976, when my parents made the maiden voyage to the US from Laos. I like the motley crew of different cuisines that are being offered , and look forward to visiting each one.

Thanks -- next time I work at my firm's Tysons office I will make a point to go upstairs for my coffee instead of the usual Starbucks.  Today I'm downtown and got Cafe Chocolat instead of chain mud.😊 Some days I work Swing's into the rotation too. Looking forward to trying a new coffee spot.

Whoever runs it must own the building - this is the type of place that seems like it would have been bought out ten-years ago.

FWIW, whoever owns it now is making some effort to be community-friendly. http://www.walkarlington.com/rosslyn-walking-food-tour-recap/

Bought by this guy in 2004. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63708-2004Jul20.html. Can't tell if he still owns it or not.

And look what still turns up on google! https://www.starchefs.com/RDonna/html/ilradicchio.shtml

I like Timber bagels, and Bethesda bagels. Bullfrog are good too. I haven't been to Call Your Mother yet and in the past Georgetown Bagelry was good but its been a few years. I also grew up on and really liked Bagel City in Rockville but its been a few years and they have some awful yelp reviews now so it may be hit or miss. I do like the smaller size bagels at Bagel City. Baked by Yael bagels across from the zoo are ok but my wife is not a fan and the flavors are limited. Breadfurst bagels are overcooked often and are not soft on the inside as a bagel should be.  I once tried Pumpernickel bagels in Chevy Chase DC and thought they were awful. I recently got some plain bagels for the kids at Firehook and I don't know why but they were sourdough with a distinct sourness which of course turned off the kiddos.

Thanks for the tip on Firehook. We live near the well-camouflaged mother ship on Flint Lee Road in Chantilly and I go there fairly often but have never tried the bagels. BTW, if you are out there, Chennai Express on Lee Road across from Target/Costco should be a must-try.
