Picnic, Grab and Go, and Deli Options

We are thinking of doing something rather stupid this weekend... join the mass crowd of tourists in DC. The strategy for meals that seems to work for us with our two kids is to find bakeries, delis, grocers, and similar places with a cooler full of salads, sandwiches, fruit, etc... that will survive a few hours and not draw the ire of security teams. We are looking at a couple of hotels in the Dupont and Logan circle areas as well as near the main touristy areas. I would appreciate any advice on where to go to fill our cooler.

Thanks!

Dan

From one Dan M to another...

In the area you're asking about, Cork Market at 14th and S has a small but good quality selection of prepared sandwiches and salads.  If you want to go the grocery store option, you'll get better coverage but perhaps at a cost to quality: there's Trader Joe's on 14th between T and U, and the Whole Foods on P St. between 14th and 15th.  If you want to go the made-to-order route you could get some very good barbeque sandwiches (weekends only during the day) at Standard also at 14th and S (they are happy to do to-go orders, though I would go when they aren't crazy crowded).  You could also load up at the Dupont Circle farmers market Sunday morning.

When we come for the capitol rehearsal we normally stop at the Whole Foods in Foggy Bottom, they have lots of good grab and go options by virture of being right by GW.  Much more than some other places.  It's not THAT far away from Dupont.  It's been so long since I lived in DC, not sure what other options there are on a weekend.  So many of the little deli type places aren't open on weekends. The are the typical Le Pain Quotidien, Chopt, Sweetgreen, Potbelly, Taylor Gourmet etc?  There is a Whole Foods in Logan Circle too.  Hopefully someone else might know if there are some better options.
