Waitman
If you're like me and you buy a lit of fruit from hippie luddite organic farmers, you may find yourself with a kitchen full of fruit flies. If so, pour some apple cider vinegar into a bowl, spike it with a few drops of liquid kitchen detergent, and let the little pests off themselves. It works well. In this case, you don't catch more flies with honey.

lperry
If you're feeling kind, you can make a little paper funnel with a tiny hole in it, and put it in the neck of a bottle that has a bit of vinegar in the bottom. They will get in, then cluster around the funnel trying to get out. It helps sometimes to seal the neck with tape so they can't sneak out around the edges. Once they are in, you can take the bottle outside and release them into the wilds of the fruit fly kingdom.

SeanMike
I have a friend who has worked as a molecular geneticist using fruit flies for the past 10 or so years - she has some good ways of catching them. Me, I don't keep food in the house. THAT'LL TEACH THEM!
Anna Blume
Somewhat related: if you bake your organic fruit into a pie and you leave it on the counter to cool, unafraid of rats, cats or other mammals, make sure your hippie friends give you some green walnuts to place nearby and ward off ants.
