pras Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 While not exactly a dinning related post, it is ancillarily so. I was invited to a client's Christmas Party next weekend. It is a Chineese Grand Banquet. What is an appropriate hostess gift? He is from Hong Kong and I would like to impress him and his wife. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
thistle Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 If I were the host, I'd like an orchid, but that presents the problem of where to put it during the dinner...maybe a nice bottle of wine or spirits?
lperry Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 When I asked Chinese friends what to take my hosts in Beijing when I visited, I was told that there is a great deal of meaning in a gift that demonstrates you are sharing your culture or family traditions with them. I took some locally made chocolates and my husband's book, both of which were well received.
DC Deb Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Cognac is a common gift in HK--gift boxed Hennessy or Martell. Also, Swarovski crystal figurines are very popular.
astrid Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 For business associates that you do not know well, expensive cognac or whiskey would be best. They're known quantities, keep well, and can easily be regifted. If you know he enjoys fine wine, a well selected bottle might impress more.
