Rheingold Beer

I'm listening to WETA, and then I'm looking in the refrigerator to see if we have some beer.

Then I say, certain music sent me looking ... It was the Rheingold Beer jingle music.

No, it was the Estudiantina waltz, arranged by Emile Waldteufel, Opus 191, No. 4. To me, it

will always the Rheingold beer jingle. I'm not sure if the version I remember is the one

recorded by Les Paul, or not. Rheingold closed its doors in 1976 ... I must have been listening

to beer commercials as a very tiny tot.

My beer is Rheingold, the dry beer

Won't you try some whenever you buy beer

Da dada dee dee dee

Da dada dee dee dee

Won't you buy extra dry Rheingold beer!

Please correct and/or fill in the blanks.

My memory is obviously patchy on the lyrics, although I now have that d*x# melody stuck in my head.

Thanks for nothin', you dawg!!

It's refreshing, not sweet

It's the extra dry treat

I cannot think of that song without thinking of sitting by the radio listening to Mets games years and years ago. I should add that Rheingold did have a brief rebirth in the late 80's early 90's. (Same jingle too!). Although I'm unsure about the nature of it's brewing or ownership at that time, I do remember putting down a good many six-packs while mowing the lawn each summer.

Rheingold was good, but it was no Hamm's.

From the Land of Sky Blue Waters,

From the land of pines, lofty balsams,

Comes the beer refreshing,

Hamm's the beer refreshing.

Brewed where nature works her wonders,

Aged for many moons, gently mellowed,

Hamm's the beer refreshing,

Hamm's the beer refreshing.

From across the rippling water,

Through the whisp'ring pines and birches,

Comes the beer refreshing,

Hamm's the beer refreshing.

Comes a call to cool enchantment,

Comes a call to cool refreshment,

Hamm's the beer refreshing,

Hamm's the beer refreshing.

Hints of lakes and sunset breezes,

Dance and sparkle in each glassful,

Hamm's the beer refreshing,

Hamm's the beer refreshing.

Rheingold and the Mets (and Bob Murphy on the radio) certainly go hand in hand. I used to pick some up on visits to NY, but haven't seen any in the last few years. Perhaps its finally over...

Peggy Lee singing:

Children off

to bed upstairs

Cuddled up

with teddy bears . . .

The evening's yours and what a time for

Falstaff.

All of this brings to mind a cartoon I saw back in the day: Two camp counselors looking at a group of little girls around a campfire and one says "All they want to sing are beer commercials!"
