  1. Cherry season is here! Where do you get them? Who has the best? How are you using them? (from D&S Farm, Charlotte Hall, MD-they sell at the Del Ray market)
  2. Has anyone seen fresh pomegranates lately. I thought they were usually available locally by now but I cannot find any.
  3. So I made a special trek out to the apple farm (nameless because I'm going to whine...) to buy my beloved Jonathan apples this past weekend. I always go the second Saturday of September and buy enough to get me through November. Got them home and eagerly tried one. Awful! Hard, tart and generally impossible to eat. Okay--maybe one of those other yucky apples got mixed in. I'll wait and try another before I get nervous. Nope. Sitting on my desk is another inedible apple. I called the farm to ask if it was possible the apples had been mislabeled. Unlikely. They only had Jonathan and Galas this past weekend and there is no way on earth this was a Gala. Most likely it's the dry season. So what is a broken-hearted midwestern gal supposed to do with a peck of inedible apples? I see lots of applesauce in my future. Sigh... Jennifer
  4. When I was in Hawaii, I had the best bananas I've ever eaten - they were about half the size of the ones you normally see around here, very soft, and very sweet. Are these what you're referring to at the end of your post?
  5. I never knew that the Navel Orange (the "navel" is the protrusion which contains a second fruit) was the result of a mutation that occurred in Brazil around 1810-1820.
  6. Arg, forgot to get definite answer about cherries this afternoon. I'll check with my usual source of when things will appear at market this evening. New Morning Farm's market at the Sheridan School (36th & Alton) had their first Tuesday market of the summer today They had the regular suspects, beautiful sweet peas, asparagus, lettuce, strawberries. The exciting find du jour was heirloom tomatoes! The also had regular hot house ones but as far as I am concerned between the strawberries and heirlooms summer has arrived. Fresh strawberries on a Tuesday may just get me through this week.
  7. I was surprised to find Seville oranges at the Glover Park Whole Foods the other day, and bought a couple. (The cashier looked at them with some puzzlement, I told her they were Seville oranges, so she immediately rang them up as navel oranges at $1.25 apiece. They were supposed to be $0.50 apiece. The error was corrected.) Anyway, what shall I do with them? (I only bought two, so I'm not open to suggestions of marmalade.) I used to have a pork-and-Seville-oranges dish at a restaurant I really liked on 17th Street (I think it was called something like "Cantina del Sol" -- it morphed into the negligible La Frontera a long, long time ago). Anyone make that dish, and if so how? Any other ideas?
