K1 (Beer Advocate rating) is a neighborhood gem for beer and wine. I am planning to visit Belgium, so I stopped in at K1 to buy a bottle of Chimay. I was delighted to find several types of Chimay here, but I didn't buy any because there were so many other interesting beer selections from Belgium. I wound up trying two beers from Bruges, where I am planning to visit for a few days. This store is small, but it has a great selection of adult beverages--particularly beer.

FWIW, I just noticed today that they've opened a location in College Park on Rt 1 about two blocks north of the UMCP main gate. (On a related note...when did gentrification hit Hyattsville?!)

Both Sheetz and Wawa have very decent food. The egg salad at Wawa is *really* good. The only time you should EVER buy egg salad at a gas station. If you could somehow figure out how to shoehorn Wawas into Northern VA (specifically Fairfax and Loudoun County), you could make a *fortune*. Well, since this is now it's own thread... Here are the three closest Wawas to the DC Metro Area: 13355 Minnieville Rd Woodbridge, VA (703) 492-9984 15809 Jefferson Davis Highway Woodbridge, VA (703) 583-3584 10515 Baltimore Avenue Beltsville, MD (301) 595-2013 These are basically what would happen if a gas station-equipped 7-11 crossbred with a Subway and Whole Foods yet still stayed affordable. The coffee consistently beats anyone's, the snacks are always fresh, and the made-to-order food is always good (special kudos to the chicken and egg salad, which are freshly-made and will never disappoint). Best of all, most are open 24h, have cheap gas, and they're dotted all along I-95 between DC and Richmond, *especially* down to Fredericksburg. And also, given again that this is its own thread now - Sheetz is NOT affiliated with Wawa. Wawa is superior to Sheetz in every single way imaginable by the human subconscious.

I searched high and low, but found no thread or other post regarding 7-11. I'm surprised because, though I am known among my friends as someone to consult regarding all things culinary, I must confess a love of 7-11 hot dogs, particularly the 1/4 pound spicy bite. But this post is not about that. It's about the other things they serve, which have seemingly been shoe-horned into tube shape so they can be cooked on the hot dog grills. I speak, specifically, about the "taquito." My girlfriend has a dog. This dog loves me, and usually won't leave me alone, so I walk him often. I also am frequently the one that feeds him. In short, there is a bond, so hopefully it doesn't seem cruel when I reveal that my nickname for him is "dumb-dumb." He's a sweet guy, and terribly inquisitive, but basically a simpleton. Notwithstanding, or perhaps because of this, he will eat anything. When I lived in DC, he found chicken bones and other detritus that no one could have -- and consumed it. And he still does this now that he lives in the 'burbs, though to a lesser extent. But, honestly, he did something the other day that surprised me. On a normal walk, I saw a whole, seemingly fresh, taquito in our path and decided not to avoid it. The dog came to it while smelling the ground incessantly, presumably looking for things to eat. But when he encountered the taquito, he passed right by, not even recognizing it as food. So, if you're tempted, don't be. My--de facto--dog has decided that a taquito is not food. Clearly you should not eat one.
