Tujague Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 My partner, Bob, and I are greatly relieved to learn that his extended family in The Philippines (mostly on Romblon)--numbering in the hundreds--appear to be safe and relatively unscathed by Typhoon Haiyan. But it is always good to know of what agencies can use donations--money!--to help those whose lives have been devastated. Here is the contact info for some organizations that the Washington Post listed today. I will personally vouch for the fine efforts of Lutheran World Relief. I hope others will list other organizations they recommend. American Red Crosswww.redcross.org 800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767) CARE Internationalwww.care.org 800-422-7385 Catholic Relief Serviceswww.crs.org 877-435-7277 Christian Aidwww.christianaid.org 434-977-5650 Lutheran World Serviceswww.lwr.org 800-597-5972 Oxfamwww.oxfam.org 800-77-OXFAM (800-776-9326) Save the Childrenwww.savethechildren.org 800-728-3843 UNICEFwww.unicefusa.org 800-FOR-KIDS (800-367-5437) World Visionwww.worldvision.org 888-511-6548 Also, I strongly advise folks to read this article from Slate magazine that discourages non-monetary donations, and does a good job of explaining why. (Don, please feel free to move this to a more appropriate forum. Thanks.) 6
Gary Tanigawa Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org Donor Services at (212) 763-5779, Monday-Friday from 9am - 5pm EST or email donations@newyork.msf.org. 1
PollyG Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Also American Jewish World Service http://ajws.org Donations will be directed to local groups in the Philippines who are already on the ground and know the communities. AJWS is a strong proponent of purchasing supplies close to the disaster area, both to reduce shipping costs and to avoid disrupting the area's economy with a flood of free goods which unintentionally hurts local businesses. The specific donation page is at https://secure.ajws.org/site/Donation2?df_id=6421&6421.donation=form1&__utma=233384270.688582353.1384047850.1384047850.1384228286.2&__utmb=233384270.7.10.1384228286&__utmc=233384270&__utmx=-&__utmz=233384270.1384047850.1.1.utmcsr=%28direct%29|utmccn=%28direct%29|utmcmd=%28none%29&__utmv=-&__utmk=58441321 1
Tujague Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 Here is a page that provides information on how some of the charities listed above spend their money and the transparency of their practices. This can help you decide how you want to direct your money--for medical relief, long-term recovery, etc.
cheezepowder Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Cashion's Eat Place is having a Typhoon Haiyan Relief Night on Nov. 25 from 6-10pm, $40, with 100% donated to charity.
DonRocks Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Toby's Homemade Ice Cream And Coffee is donating 100% of the tip jar to Typhoon Haiyan relief. Toby is from The Philippines, so even though it's a leap of faith throwing money into the tip jar, I left $3.00 for my $1.85 cup of coffee a few days ago - I trust him implicitly.
