hungry prof
My soon-to-be eight-year old has requested an ice cream cake for his party. Anybody know where I can find one? Carvel is a fall back, I guess, but Carvel always tastes so. . .unlike ice cream. Thanks.
Waitman
Mrs. B and I had Ben & Jerry's do an ice cream cake for our wedding and, in checking to see if there is still on in DC (the A-M location where we got ours) I see that there are several area outlets and they do offer cakes. (You might let it come up to temperature in the fridge for a good while before serving, as they are tough to slice).
lperry
Carvel still exists? Carvel of the Saturday-morning-cartoon-interrupting ads with the guy who sounded like a cross between Mel from Mel's Diner and The Aardvark? Mom always made our birthday cakes, but I always wanted to try one from Carvel.
hillvalley
Thomas Sweet in Georgetown was the place to go to for ice cream cakes back in the day. If you were really lucky you got to stop at Commander Salamander to get your hair sprayed neon pink before you picked up the cake.
Rhone1998
Coldstone Creamery in Ballston makes them.
Pat
I don't know if it's a step up or down from Carvel, but Baskin Robbins sells them too. When I worked there back in the day, I made them, and not well .
hungry prof
Thanks, all. Some great leads, here. And, yes, Carvel still exists with a bunch of area locations. Apparently, however, Fudgie the Whale is no longer a standard cake that they offer. What is Carvel without Fudgie the Whale?
porcupine
I know this isn't what you're asking for, but memories... when I was little a favorite birthday dessert was cassata, one of those Italian desserts that lends itself to infinite variations. My mother made it in a loaf pan with Cointreau-soaked spongecake and strawberry ice cream and ricotta cheese, with whipped cream on top.

My mother made it in a loaf pan with Cointreau-soaked spongecake and strawberry ice cream and ricotta cheese, with whipped cream on top. I had a great fondness for liqueur-soaked desserts when I was a little kid, too, especially Crepes Suzettes, flambe'ed tableside at Cafe de Paris in Hollywood. When I was about 12, I was allowed to eat a baba au rhum at The Red Onion in Aspen, Colo. that was soaked with so much rum that I absolutely staggered back to our motel.
