Kibbee Nayee
As lunch counter Italian-ish goes, Springfield and surrounding areas deliver. Bozzelli's on Backlick serves up decent subs and mama's Italian dishes, with an ever-improving beer and wine selection. Johnny's over near Kingstowne offers a nice assortment of hearty pizzas and Itlaian fare, with emphasis on hearty. Half a notch below is Uncle Charlie's, a non-chain that caters mostly to the workers at nearby garages and businesses in the Backlick-Alban-Haute-Boudinot corridor. Uncle Charlie's offers a breakfast menu all day long -- and that separates it from some of the competition. You can get an omelet for dinner, for example, or you can get the area's only scrapple sandwich any time of day. The pizzas are OK, not great, and the sandwiches are not up to Bozzelli's standards. They deliver, and my neighborhood is within the delivery envelope. Not a place you would take a detour for, but if you like scrapple or have a hankering for a late evening omelet, or a credible but not great pizza, Uncle Charlie's delivers. Literally.

This restaurant is most likely empty every single evening, but makes plenty of workers and tired after-workers happy with their delivery. Sometimes, you just need to be *fed* without making any effort - you limp in from work, change clothes, fall onto the couch, turn on the TV, tthe doorbell rings, and a hot dinner has arrived. We often discuss places like Palena, CityZen, etc., but the number of housebound people that benefit from delivery - *any* delivery - is quite high, and a high-quality restaurant making deliveries to an under-served area could deservedly make a fair amount of money from a grateful clientele. See that big apartment building across from you, Taco Bamba?
Kibbee Nayee
I drove past Uncle Charlie's and saw a sign that it was under new management, and "tenemos comida hispana" or words to that effect in my hazy drive-by. Will provide a direct field report soon.
