On November 15th,  the grand opening of the  Bourse will be happening. I'm not sure how I feel about food halls yet. My experience so far has been 50/50. I have been to the Block VA, and was not impressed one bit. I frequently head to Belvedere Square in Bmore, and love it there. If I were to give a crude description to food halls, I would describe them as souped up food courts. Am I wrong?

It may be worth mentioning that a couple of the vendors at the Bourse are District imports, Takorean, as well as Mi and Yu Noodle Bar, a DC based chain.  Actually I think the developers are from DC as well, now that I think about it. I did a bit of research and learned that bit. I can't seem to locate the article.

I don't think you're wrong.  They are food courts.  The famous hawker centers are just food courts; however, the quality of the food stands may in some cases rival that of high end restaurants.  Or they can be as inauthentic and crappy as Chipotle.  A great food city will also have great food halls.  A crappy food city will not have great food halls.  They're all just part of the food supply chain.

I am probably going on Black Friday so I will report back when I go, but from what I hear, it's awesome and popular already. The grand opening is next week!

Kicking off with an official Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony led by Philadelphia Mayor, Jim Kenney, on Thursday, November 15th at 9 a.m., the first 100 guests to dine at The Bourse Food Hall for breakfast (9:15 a.m.), and then for lunch (noon), and dinner (5 p.m.) will receive gifts such as “Taste of The Bourse” gift bags, gift cards, treats from vendors, and more. Attendees at the two-day celebration will also be in the running to win larger prizes, such as tickets to see the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers. Thursday’s celebration will cap off with an Old City Happy Hour from 5-7 p.m. for Old City residents, business owners and employees. Attendees at the two-day celebration will also be in the running to win larger prizes, such as tickets to see the Philadelphia Flyers and The Philadelphia 76ers.

I don't know the actual reason, but I would assume the DC eateries wanted to branch out. I see nothing wrong with it because I'm cool with outsiders coming in with yummy food, but apparently, some people are super up in arms about it. 🤷‍♀️

The property developers are from DC. Not sure if that is the reason for export, but I’d say why wouldn’t they?

There are also vendors from Lehigh Valley there, too, Diversity is a good thing if the quality is there. Majority of the staff is local. I was told that they approached a lot of different local restaurants and chefs and lots of people actually turned them down, so why not look outside of Philadelphia for a few?

I have first hand knowledge of one of the vendors backing out. A cold press juice vendor based here in Lancaster shopped around the notion of opening up at the Bourse, but for whatever reason, all of the stars did not align. I rarely depend solely on editorials to steer my decision on wanting to visit a place. It actually does the exact opposite. I plan on checking out the food hall over the holiday stretch, and like @PhillyGrub will report back on my findings.

I think Foobooz is engaging in Trumpian logic - why import anything when we can make it ourselves in Philly.  Sometimes things like the Commerce Clause endanger local businesses.  Maybe we ought to take a close look at that.

I think Foobooz is saying there are GREAT local restaurants who want in on the Bourse but instead we're getting start-ups and mediocre chains from other markets.  I have no idea who wants in and didn't get in so there's no way to verify that assertion.
