The Bread Ovens at Quail Creek Farm

Recommended Posts

Quail Creek Farm (formerly Lanham Bakery) is only at the Penn Quarter market, I believe, and boy they've just got the best bread of any local farmer's market as far as I'm concerned. Potato with truffle oil and bacon with onion are my two favorites. And aside from variety of recipes they just taste the best. Bonaparte at Dupont Market takes the cake with pastries (and second place in my bread category) but Quail Creek bread crumbs are the ones that always lead a trail to my home.

Aside from my Penn Quarter bread purchase today....some tasty blueberries and sweet cherries. They'll be sitting atop some ricotta cheese tonight with a splash of honey.

I looked these guys up on the market's web site ("Ovens at Quail...."). Apparently they're an operation in WV and you're right about in-town exclusivity at Penn Quarter...so far. They attend the Shepherdstown farmers' market on Sundays.

Um, has anyone else had bread from The Bread Ovens at Quail Creek Farm? Bread Ovens

I picked up a brioche at the Penn Quarter Market yesterday and I can't decide if it is the best brioche I have ever had or the best challah I have ever had. Really I am confused, but it is good. Really good.

Oh, and I had a chocolate cookie that also made me happy and raised the following question:

How can you bake a chocolate cookie full chocolate chips that doesn't melt in the sun????

This is not a good sign though... I remember when I went to Farmer's Markets for produce.

I haven't tried the brioche but he has a raisen bread covered in sugar that is amazing. I think I'm glad that its hard for me to get to Penn Quarter most weeks!

I just love this bread. It makes the most fabulous toast.

This baby is going to make toast, croutons, panzanello, tuscan bread soup........ ;) Too much great bread is a good problem to have. Heather, what other breads have you tried there?

BTW....scones were perfect blend of density and flake.

I bought half a pugliese from them on Thursday at Penn Qtr.

Thanks! I'll have to expand my horizons to the Penn Q. market to get thier bread. Thier website lists a few other markets which they participate with, including Arlington and Kingstowne. This week I went 0 for 2 trying to find them. But, if they're consistently at Penn Q., I'll take a ride into DC. That market seems to be a good one as well.

And they don't just make bread!

I picked up some of this soup last night and am excited for dinner tonight:

Pumpkin and bay scallops

Fresh pumpkin, onions, celery, champagne vinegar, chicken broth, finished with julienne of fresh pumpkin and cream. Garnished with minced fresh parsley and bay scallops

I had the pumpkin soup for lunch. You won't be disappointed.

I, however, am quite disappointed to spend the next several months without their soups. Even on Thursday's I haven't needed to go into the office, I usually found myself driving in for soup. And after months of Mr. BLB ignoring the sweets I bought there, he actually ate his chocolate chip cookie. I've been getting to eat it for ages!

I asked but they don't do any winter markets.

Sigh...

I had the red plum soup with riesling recently - really good! (reminiscent of the white peach soup with riesling I had during my one and only meal at TIALW)

And things have changed since the previous posts about Quail Creek only being at Penn Quarter, they are also at the White House, Arlington, Burke, and Annapolis markets.

I believe they are at Arlington year round.

they've pull out of the burke famers market. From what we were told the fairfax county health department hassled them for not having their products individually wrapped up. Since they couldn't do that, they pulled out of the market rather than face a fine.
