  1. Tim Carman just posted a fairly positive write-up of this latest franchise from the Tennessee-based chain. Having dined at a couple of the Memphis-area locations over the years, my expectations are very high and I will be investigating shortly. It's pretty spicy (but nothing like Nashville Hot) fried chicken and typical southern sides (menu here) in a relaxed atmosphere - at the downtown Memphis location, it was common to see folks waiting on a table with a 40oz bottle of malt liquor from the shop around the corner. Opening this thread in the hopes that someone has beaten me to the spot and can tell me if I should make the trip or just wait until I'm back in Memphis to visit family.
  2. You know, this place is surprising good. Not just better than the few other non-chains in Greenbelt, but I've actually had a couple meals here that I wouldn't be upset with even if I were eating at a Thai restaurant in DC proper. Not somewhere that anyone needs to go out of their way for, but for people working in Greenbelt (or even living here...gasp) I think this might be as good as it gets. I'd love someone to point out somewhere better to eat in Greenbelt, from what I've gathered so far its got two of every chain and not much else in terms of dining options.
  3. For anyone who frequents the New Deal cafe in the Roosevelt Center in Greenbelt, the current chef is leaving at the end of November, and the coop that runs the New Deal is changing the menu from Lebanese to something closer to American next month. There was a partial sample new menu on the neighborhood listserv that has stuff like burgers, salads, salmon, jambalaya, chicken and waffles, etc., approximately half vegetarian. The current chef (Karim) is possibly opening his own restaurant nearby after winning a $50k lottery ticket: "$50K Lottery Win Helps Restaurant Manager with Dream" by Kristin Wright on nbcwashington.com
  4. I live and work in Greenbelt, and lets just say that decent dining options in the immediate area are....limited. In the Greenway Center (the one with the Safeway on 193 next to the B-W Parkway) is a small Chinese restaurant that seems to have held tough while other nearby Chinese restaurants have come and gone. They mostly serve what you would expect - the standard Americanized Chinese menu options, not the best quality and not the worst. I pretty much have only eaten there for work-related outings and when we needed a quick takeout option. However, they have another menu that is not translated into English (see attached file for what may be a phone photo of a scan/fax that is mostly illegible). I had read some reviews which said they had some better dishes on this menu, but when I went in the restaurant, the staff were not keen to tell me what any of the dishes were, and kept trying to steer me back to the regular menu. Finally, one of the summer interns at work got a copy of the secret menu and had his parents translate it before we had a group work lunch there. Below is that translation of the top section of the menu (he said the bottom section were repeats of the Americanized menu) left column: capital spare rib salt-sweet spiced spare rib dry-dofu with shredded pork stir fried hot pepper chinese beef black pepper beef green onion stir fry beef mustard stir fry beef pickled cabbage stir fry beef salty dry veg stew pork 8-treasure stew dofu stew tulip beef tendor salty fish & chicken stew dofu salty fish ground pork stew chinese eggplant xisi (beauty queen) dofu right column; celery chicken slice stir fry salt-sweet spiced shrimp pepper squid salt sweet squid salt sweet three treasure guangdong fire duck (half) steamed chicken (half) green onion chicken garlic spinach some kind of green veg hundred flower eggplant hundred flower dofu hundred flower three treasure butter shrimp ball salt sweet shrimp ball We had six dishes at the lunch - snow pea shoots, 8 treasure stew (various seafoods in a hot pot), one of the shredded pork dishes, one of the chicken dishes, a beef dish, and a dish of deep fried flounder in a spicy batter. I'm not sure of which dish was which because said intern negotiated the entire order with the server, and the translated menu is a little hazy. The fish was nice - the batter was light and delicate, with a flavorful spiciness. My favorite was the shredded pork dish, which was salty and I think had pieces of hot pepper and black beans. The chicken had thin slices of meat in a very mild sauce with a variety of vegetables. I would have liked a little more garlic or other seasoning on the snow pea shoots, but they weren't bad. I can't remember details of the beef or 8-treasure dishes (this lunch was about a month ago, sorry). Was the food on the order of Grace Garden, Panda Gourmet, or others? No, but it was waaaaay better than the regular menu, and there really aren't many options for non-Americanized Chinese food in the area. I'm sure I will be back again, and plan to copy the translated menu onto my phone so I can actually order some of the dishes. I have posted it here in the hopes that if enough people try to order off of the secret menu, that they will translate it and make it more accessible.
  5. Helping a friend. She's looking for a place to go to brunch in suburban MD, somewhere in/between Silver Spring and Laurel (and probably willing to veer a bit east or west as needed). Nothing too fancy, but good food and where you do not need to feel rushed about. My only ideas are generally in DC (or Baltimore). Thoughts?
  6. For 3 years, between 2008 and 2011, I had head pain, slightly above and behind my left ear. The pain was unrelenting, day and night, stressed or relaxed. I tried everything to relieve the pain: massage, acupuncture, cranial sacral, a regular chiropractor, NSAIDS. Absolutely nothing helped. (Well, ok, one thing helped: 2 glasses of wine would put that pain away.) Early on, an endodontist recommended that I see Dr. Leslie Windman, a chiropractor, for the pain. He told me that one of his dental colleagues swore by her. The fact that her office in Greenbelt was a long drive from my home in Rockville, and the fact that she was expensive and didn’t accept insurance, inhibited me from following his advice. For 3 years. Finally, in November of 2011, I had grown so miserable and so desperate that I decided to give Dr. Windman a try. After the first treatment I experienced significant relief and after just 2 or 3 treatments, I was pain-free – for the first time in 3 years. I continued to see Dr. Windman regularly for several months to stabilize my condition and now I go whenever I need a tune-up – usually after a visit to my dentist, when I’ve had to hold my mouth open for a prolonged period. Dr. Windman practices a type of chiropractic called atlas orthogony, which corrects misalignment of the Atlas vertebra (the uppermost vertabra of the spine). Very precise measurements are taken and a machine is used to slide the errant atlas back into place. (It feels like a very slight tap on your neck. There is no discomfort whatsoever.) After the atlas is realigned, Dr. Windman uses other techniques to stabilize it over subsequent sessions. I consider Dr. Windman to be one of the most valuable discoveries I’ve ever made among health-care practitioners. And, she’s a very nice person. Yes, it’s been expensive and it’s been worth every penny. (My insurance company has reimbursed me for part of the cost, but clearly not at the same rate it would to a participating provider.) I find that many of the best doctors don’t participate with insurance companies because they want to have the freedom to treat you in the way they feel is best, not in the way the insurance company demands. I'm ok with that. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Leslie Windman to anyone suffering from head or neck pain.
