  1. John who owns Herndon Plumbing is a Master plumber. His family has been in the business since the late 1950's. I cannot rave enough about him. Unfortunately, we have needed him a half dozen times over the past five or so years. But he has also done a great deal of work in our neighborhood for a long time and is known well. In our case it has not just been a clogged drain. We have had a pinhole leak (which can mean breaking through drywall to get to it), water pipes underneath the ground and pipes in the wall in our bathroom (behind marble which he was able to reach without having to break the tiles). To say that he is knowledgeable is an understatement. Included in his repertoire is a sewer video camera. In truth he is old school with a very small company and it is probably going to be him who does the work. I'll also note that he is not inexpensive but the work will be correctly diagnosed and it will be done right. To be honest most of the jobs we know of John having done are much larger but I want to mention him for anyone that may need a seriously good Master plumber in the future. Especially in a more complicated job. We trust him. Joe Heflin
  2. Alexandria location of this locksmith is my go to store. I have used their service and products in the past year more multiple times and I am very happy and satisfied. Every person who works in this store is super knowledgeable and explain small details. They will come and do a survey where you would need the service. They will tell you if you are overdoing it or the right choices are made. They call, email and come and do the service always on time. Product line is great enough for me where I can go in the store check out the locks and ask questions. Since safety is very important they will make you feel safe even with the answers they provide. Compared to other locksmiths the price is about the same. That of course changes with the product you purchase. However, the service and information they provide is unparalleled. Ferhat Yalcin
  3. When I got home from work last night, I found that my basement was starting to flood and had about an inch of water on the floor, soaking the carpeting and starting to creep up the baseboards. Google pointed me in the direction of Flood Doctor. I called them around 10 PM and talked to Frank. He was extremely helpful and efficient during the call and assured me that he would have somebody out to the house around 2 AM. I was nicely surprised when Frank himself showed up with two other guys at 11:15. They went about their business very quickly, cleaning up the water, ripping up the carpet, disposing of the ruined padding and setting out dehumidifiers and floor blowers. I was assured that they'd be back in 4 days to collect the equipment, replace the padding, lay the carpet back down and sanitize/steam clean the entire basement. We knocked out the insurance paperwork and they were out the door around midnight. Total pros. As much as it sucks having to deal with a flooded basement, these guys took a lot of the hassle out of it. Highly recommend. http://www.flooddoctorva.com/ Dave Pressley
  4. A good friend of mine, Jamie Gallagher, recently left the Marine Corps and has started a personal training company, Origin Fitness. As you might imagine, Jamie specializes in the "boot camp" type training and, really, who else would you want to run boot camp but a Marine? However, unlike the drill sargent stereotype, Jamie is an extremely nice guy and I'm sure would be happy to help you with nearly any type of training. If you're looking to get into shape and to do it properly, I highly recommend giving Jaime a call.
  5. My office used Shred Station (located near the Marlo Furniture off Edsall in Alexandria) this past week to clear out an attic and upper floor of papers, bank statements and ledgers running back to when my boss moved into this building in 1981. Quick, professional, friendly, on time and a great deal at $190 to come to the site and shred approximately 50 letter boxes of paper. Half the price that was quoted by the big name shredder companies, and much easier to book an appointment. They do want payment at the end of the shred but didn't require a contract or deposit to come out. They also do residential and can do Saturdays, and you can drop up to 4 boxes by at their location without an appointment (about $10-$13 per box). http://www.shredstationva.com/ Oh, they don't shred the cardboard boxes unless you let them know ahead of time, because they send a different truck. The cardboard goes through a different process than the paper shredding. Louise Comninaki (weezy)
  6. I would like to recommend Patriot Shredding http://www.patriotshredding.com/ (240) 206-6030 to anyone who has any significant amount of shredding of documents that have SSNs or other sensitive info. Due to a death in the family, I had many boxes of old bank records and other materials that needed to be shredded. I had neither the time nor the patience to feed this monster pile of paper through a home shredder (and by the way, those motors burn out very easily!). I also didn't want to go to one of those community shredding events because aside from the fact that there weren't any coming up any time soon, I didn't know if they (a ) did the shredding on-site (a key security issue) (b ) could handle old credit cards, passports, and such (c ) could handle old hard drives Patriot Shredding is based in Rockville but they also cover DC and VA. You can go to their facility on Wilkins Court (near the FDA) or you can have them come to your home. They bring a truck that has a huge shredder and they shred everything while you watch. They show up on time so you don't have to sit around half the day waiting for them. They also donate 5% of all sales to AFF, a non-partisan 501©(3) organization dedicated to promoting the morale, welfare, and quality of life of those within the United States Armed Forces community.
