Here's an update on Heart in Hand in Clifton. The decline continued. Eventually the management made a feeble attempt to turn it into a bar, noted mostly for its malaise. It wasn't interesting enough to get the local writers to hang out there, which means it was pretty bad. Also, the AC didn't work. Eventually it slid quietly out of sight. I don't think anybody noticed the day it closed. Heart in Hand was briefly replaced by a place called Weston's, which didn't have an ABC license, but did have an obnoxious person on the phone who enjoyed trashing his neighbors more than telling callers about his restaurant. It closed almost before it was fully open. Now an Italian place seems to be making an attempt. It's at least applying for an ABC license. But at last check it hadn't actually opened. So right now your best bets in Clifton are the Main Street Pub, formerly the Clifton General Store which is OK for lunch and is more of a bar at dinner. Then there's Peterson's which is an ice cream place that sells hot dogs and barbecue when it's open. The hours are at the owner's whim. Finally, there's Trummer's on Main, which remains excellent. They've upped the ante with a nice bar menu that's reasonably priced. If you're in Clifton, go there. --- [The following posts have been split into separate threads: Trattoria Villagio (wrash)]

I just got an invitation from the folks who run Trummers on Main in Clifton to their soft opening this week. I plan to go there for dinner on Friday evening. The actual soft opening starts today with the real opening on Monday 7/13/09. The Web site is here: http://www.trummersonmain.com/ and there's a blog site by the owners here: http://www.stefantru.../blog-text.htm. With a chef from the French Laundry, maybe this will be a nice place. I'll file a full report after I visit the place, unless someone else gets there first. The number for reservations is 703.266.1623. One warning, neither Web site above is up to date. clearly the owners have been spending their time making the restaurant work. Wayne Rash -
This will be a list of restaurants that will be turned into a poll. After the list has been completed, we will vote on the poll, and the restaurant who gets the most votes will be reviewed with my best effort. Since it takes members who have written 10 posts to suggest a restaurant (the same ones who have access to our Dining Guide), I'm going to ask as many members as possible with 10 posts to suggest a restaurant they'd like to have reviewed. All restaurants in the previous poll will roll over into this poll, so there's no need to re-nominate them. Thank you to our wonderful participating members for all you've done for this community. So my wife was having drinks in Trattoria Villagio over the weekend and met the owner of a new craft brewery to open in Clifton. She was surprised that it would be in Clifton, a town not known to embrace large businesses within its confines. My wife asked the propreitor if she has had any pushback from the community, and the propreitor had said "not much". Apparently, this was before a local hearing and the Clifton Coalition is starting to fight back. I love craft beer, and I love Clifton, but I'm not so sure about a craft beer and entertainment complex is a good fit here. I welcomed the opening of Paradise Springs Winery, and do stop in there on occasion, but it has more of the feeling of a party site than a working winery and is a mob scene on weekends. I hope this is not a carbon copy. I could not find a website for the new brewery, but here is the opposition website. http://www.clifton-coalition.org/loudmouth-brewing-company.html Also, I think if you are opening a brewpub and entertainment facility in a reserved, bucolic town, you might have wanted to go with a different name.

Trattoria Villagio has been open for a couple of weeks in downtown Clifton. It's on Main St. across the tracks and across the street from Trummers on Main. I went to the soft opening and found mostly good food surrounded by chaos. It was even more disorganized that most soft openings. The dishes were mostly successful, but the Calamarato Pasta needed work. It arrived cold with the pasta underdone (we're talking pre-al dente here), so they tried again, and the second try was the same. Reverted to the safer Spaghetti Carbanata, which was very good. The pasta was clearly house made, the sauce quite good. The wine list is well chosen and reasonably priced, the drinks are well made. They claim that this was designed to look like an Italian rail station. I've been in a lot of railway stations in Italy, but this version is far too clean and orderly to really look like one. This is just as well since I don't think I'd like to eat in the main station in Gaeta, for example. If you find yourself in Clifton, it's worth a stop. There's also an attached market that has nice Italian groceries, but only in a limited supply. The market also sells carry out pizza. I plan to go back. Wayne Rash

I had a lunch meeting in Clifton today, and I suggested Trummer's on Main....my lunch partner countered with Main Street Pub. I acceded. Not a bad choice. If there was a poster for downtown Clifton -- and there probably is -- this is the place that would grace it. The front of the house is the Clifton General Store, with carry-out sandwich and bakery items, plus quite a bit of penny candy. And T-shirts. The back of the house is where the so-called Pub exists, with 10-12 tables and a nice little Pub menu, plus a spare but nice variety of libations. For lunch today, I enjoyed a Chef Salad of reasonably high quality, well worth ordering again, and my companion enjoyed one of the best looking burgers I've seen, cooked to his medium-rare specification. Definitely worth a repeat, and now I'm trying to think of a reason to be in Clifton for a breakfast here.... Just a few steps away from Trummer's. -
