Hat tip to Jake for nudging me to this "real good" spot: The Wallace. Smart crowd but decor is tasteful and comfortable. Started with a spinach salad with grilled portabellos and blue cheese which was very nice and straightforward. Grilled Japanese eggplant over lentils was next, and possibly my favorite dish of the night. Lentils were smokey and delicious! Spouse ordered the squid ink pasta with Uni bescamel and ikura. Tasty but a bit too rich for me. And yet hypocritically I loved the next course, foie gras three ways: terrine, mousse, and grilled. All fantastic, with the exception of the mousse which was spectacular. It was served over what looked like crumbled feta, but was actually dehydrated foie gras! We shared a carrot cake that delivered. Many tables ordered a mushroom tartine that looked really good. Cocktail was an apple brandy and a duck fat rinsed orange liqueur with bitters. Very nice. And the wine was all good as well. Fun place! Service got weeded here but we enjoyed ourselves and had no subsequent commitments.

Loved Beacon, we got there last winter. We got there as it opened on a Saturday evening, no tables for us either, but the bar was available, and it was the best place to sit, and mingle with the locals. Our waiter had a brother who lived in DC, and loved baseball, so we talked about the Nats and DC. Would highly recommend it, but who knows now that months have gone by, it is probably nothing that special anymore.

I had a fantastic dinner last night at A-Frame in Culver City. I highly recommend visitors to LA to stop at this much lauded restaurant. We shared the beer can chicken, peel and eat shrimp from the happy hour menu, corn bread, sweet and sour choi and kitchen fries. The chicken was insanely moist with a very crisp skin, served with house made kimchi, 2 sauces and a century egg. The shrimp were covered in kaffir lime salt and we were encouraged to lick our fingers after eating the shrimp to bring the flavor back around. The choi with chinese broccoli and bok choy and sausage may have been my favorite with a sticky but not too sweet glaze. The fries were fantastic with a variety of huge wedges of sweet potatos served with a kimchi sour cream. The cornbread was also great with the butter and salsa verde. The building is an old IHOP (hence the A-frame) and has communal seating. We got there on the early side while driving through and did not have to share but later I am sure you will. The music isn't quiet but lends to hip hop of the early 2000s... think jay z and biggie. I love it but grandma may not. WaikikiHo: gin, angostura, pineapple, passionfruit, lime was AMAZING. I do not like gin but after tasting it I ordered my own, amazing and went with the food really well. (and $7 on the happy hour menu!)
