  1. When my office orders in, we usually get takeout from the dupont location. Kind of expensive for what it is, but the Crispy Beef is totally my guilty pleasure
  2. I just wanted to check back in and give an update on my boyfriend, Quike Morales, who was shot after his shift at the Argonaut last Sept. All of you here at Donrockwell.com were so supportive and generous, and I really appreciate it and want to say thanks. The owner of the Argonaut (Joe Englert) is organizing a drive to get the last few thousand dollars needed to help fund the surgery Quike needs to get a prosthetic skull. The details are at the link: http://frozentropics.blogspot.com/2007/03/...e.html#comments It includes a way to donate online, if people don't feel like trekking out to the Argonaut (although I am sure they would love to see some new faces!) Also, here's a link to a video of Quike taken last week that was at washingtonpost.com, as part of an article about gentrification on H St: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...7031401505.html Thank you!
  3. It is still possible to make a donation. Just stop by the Argonaut, or drop it in the mail. The Argonaut address is 1433 H St. NE Washington, DC 20002
  4. I wanted to report that the benefit at the Argonaut on Friday night was a huge success, thanks in part to some really fabulous silent auction items donated by people from this website. This whole experience has been a lesson to me in how to give graciously, and all of you have been a wonderful example. On behalf of Quike and myself, thank you! Bree
  5. Last week, my boyfriend, who is a bartender/ waiter at the Argonaut, was shot in the head while walking the 1 block to my house after closing. It appears to have been completely random, there was no sign of attempted robbery or an arguement. He was standing on my front porch with his keys in the door. He survived, but is still in serious condition. Since he was uninsured, and to help defray the cost of bringing his mother here from Panama, the Argonaut is hosting a benefit & silent auction for him this Friday, Oct 13, to help raise money. The benefit begins at 7pm and continues til closing.
  6. I stopped by the Cozy Cafe this morning and had a sweet crepe for $1.99. What a great way to start the morning! Although it is not the best crepe I have ever had, it was certainly fine, especially since crepes are not very plentiful in DC. The counter staff were quick and friendly. I'll definitely be back!
  7. They recently hired a new chef at the Argonaut and the quality of the food is much more consistent. The menu has been updated to add a few more offerings and they have some slammin' vegatarian food, especially a house made mushroom burger and a fuji and fontina sandwich. I have also heard a rumor that they are opening for brunch soon, which will be a great Sunday morning stop for me once they open that patio.
  8. I think about half would be consumed at the party, the rest later. My friend works in high end restaurants and is moderately educated about wines and the like (much more than me) so I want to get her something a little interesting that she can enjoy despite the low price tag.
  9. Here's the deal: A friend of mine who lives in Philly turns 30 this week. I, sadly, am unable to make the festivities, so I was hoping to send a case of Champagne over in my stead. My budget will only allow @ 20 bucks per bottle. Part 2 of the question is how to get it there. Are there liquor stores that deliver in Philly?

    Rooftop Dining

As a person who frequents drinking establishments in the Cleveland Park area, I ended up at Bricks a time or two, and I think pretty much anything would be an improvement. The roof top is nice, but they served the drinks up there in plastic cups (uck), and they were always out of 1/2 the ingredients in any given dish.
  11. My current cheap eats favorite is Pacific Cafe & Grill , a Vietnamese place at 11th and Penn SE. It's the perfect take out solution in a seriously under-served area. My regular order is pork w/ vermicelli, but the chicken and shrimp are good too. The Pho, while not as good as what can be found in the suburbs, is passable and the perfect cure for a case of the sniffles.
