  6. DarkStar, Thank you for your kind comments. It has been a most unusual year. We often find that by June we are unable to make additional purchases, but this year, as you know, some producers had nothing of value to harvest. We are about to sell out of our first shipment of Davide Borselli's La Poderina Toscana Oro and Argento selections. Davide recently let us know that his Oro selection had been sold out and just this week, he let us know that he doesn't think his remaining stock of Argento is up to the standards of the earlier shipment that we received in December. Therefore he has no more oil to send to us. This is both remarkable and sad. So many times the Italian producers are mis-characterized. We find that our small producers exhibit the highest ethics, as demonstrated here. It is also terribly sad to think about the challenges these small producers have faced this year! We have continued to purchase carefully, and we currently have 30+ new harvest 2014 selections from Italy. We are excited about a new arrival due in tomorrow: Tommaso Masciantonio's Trappeto di Caprifico DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Abruzzo. Stop by for a taste later this week!
  7. Thank you all for your information. I'm inclined to find a map to note when I am in a 10% zone!
  8. Just cleaning out my wallet and I noticed that the sales tax was 6% at a restaurant in Merrifield, but 10% at a Starbucks on Fairfax Blvd near Paul VI high school. Are both tax rates correct? Thanks in advance!
  9. Olio2go on Hilltop in the Merrifield area of Fairfax has a selection of Italian vinegars including balsamic, white wine, and red wine vinegars, along with three floral and herbal vinegars from Volpaia.

Let us know if you would like us to plan an event for your group!
  15. DrXmus, The big difference between the two will be how authenticity is addressed. Our products are sealed and labelled just as they left the estates and small producers in Italy. The "fusti stores" have olive oil that has been rebottled several times along the way: (1) into a tank or barrel for trans-Atlantic shipping, (2) once at the distributors, it is repacked into something that is easily shippable by UPS or FedEx, such as a 5L tin, (3) then at the store, poured into the stainless steel fusti, (4) then bottled for sale in the store. We will look forward to your visit at Olio2go.
  16. Don and all, just a quick note to let you know that Olio2go is now open in Merrifield. We're happy to share olive oil tastings with customers. We've posted our address and a few photos of the store at http://olio2gostore.wordpress.com/ We have two more formal tasting events planned: Thursday, September 13 ~ Olive Oil and Bruschetta ~ 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday, September 20 ~ Glorious Pasta of Italy, Booksigning with Domenica Marchetti, 5:00-8:00PM. We hope you and your Don Rockwell participants will join in the fun.
  17. There has been a grading difference between standards in the U.S., and the European Standards (which we prefer). I believe that the new U.S. standards are using the European terms and leaving behind the 1948-"fancy" term. I'd have to go to the grocery store to share at the shelves. I know that I've seen just "olive oil" but can't remember about Virgin. Are you familiar with OliveOilSource? They do a good job with definitions and standards.
  18. Yes -- absolutely. The simplest standard is acidity. Extra Virgin is 0.8% or below. The next range higher is Virgin (up to 2.0%). Beyond that are declining grades leading to Pomace, which has been seen in local restaurants, but it wouldn't enter my kitchen. The New Yorker article linked here was really more about true, purposeful adulteration. Such adulteration was not found in the UC Davis research. For more reading fun, this is the link to the new UDSA Standards for Olive Oil, effective 25 October 2010.
  19. That trade group's involvement struck me as not wanted to be left out of the issue of the moment. With regard to the UC Davis research, it really wasn't all that surprising that the grocery store olive oils didn't meet the standard for extra virgin. It seems they were likely bumping up against the threshold when bottled, and with time and light, they "failed" the standard. The "rebuttal" group acted as good politicians in an effort to get into the fight for their own recognition.
  20. This topic is of great concern to us at Olio2go. We've also been following the case filed in Orange County, CA, where chefs are suing the olive oil companies over the labeling -- all related to the UC Davis study released on 15 July. See the Orange County Register article. In this article, it is mentioned that the chef brought Academia Barilla ($29-$30) back from Italy. I truly wonder why he would carry back (in luggage -- it's post 9-11) an olive oil that is available here! And for the same amount he could have an estate bottled oil from Sicily. With no photos accompanying the article, it is also impossible to find out about the generically named "olio" from Umbria. Where's the problem with knowing what you purchase? The chefs? Food brokers? Salespeople? How do people know what they are buying and who do you buy from? There will be more on this in October when the USDA regs go in force, but it seems the enforcement will continue to be a challenge.
  21. Hi, I'm new here! I'm in the food business and have been with the web site www.olio2go.com for four years now. We sell "Italy's Finest Olive Oil" along with balsamic vinegar, pesto, pate, mostarda, and other lovely goodies. Our office/warehouse is in the Merrifield area. Locally, I'm a big fan of the Burke Farmers Market. I like to say I was brought up with "peasant Italian cooking" and a grandmother who could make a feast for 10 out of two pork chops. --Luanne
