  1. In the old Levante's space, which is closing at the end of the year. Planned opening for the spring. Clickety. Even as casual as this seems to be, it could instantly be one of the best restaurants in mediocre-heavy Bethesda.
  2. I enjoyed a Sunday lunch Monk's Cafe this weekend. Charming little Belgian-ish bar with a gorgeous monster list of bottled beers and a few fine draught Belgians. Looks to be a regular pub, but the menu offers much more--mussels in a variety of broths, crepes, sandwiches (including boudin blanc and pulled pork), salads, and appetizers (including pate and rabbit terrine). My tuna steak sandwich was served on a very good roll, though it was alone on the plate except for a queer garnish of about four dressed field greens. Four. Imperfect service is made up for by genuine friendliness. Recommend the room in the way back. I'd be a regular if this joint were in my neighborhood.
  3. If anyone was a fan of Mannequin Pis, when Bernard Dehaene sold it, he went to Philadelphia and opened ZoT in the Society Hill neighborhood. The menu is much the same but expanded somewhat, and of course there are still those great mussels and the fantastic list of Belgian beers. --- [Note: Zot closed in November, 2009.]
  4. We went to the tasting room for lunch and decided to try the duck confit tart (its not really a tart, more like a flatbread), chorizo fennel mussels and frites, and five onion soup. The duck on the flatbread was a bit dry, the mussels were plump and flavorful. The fries came with horseradish mayo, bbq mayo, and mustard mayo, and were the same thin cut you get at Beck's, The five onion soup had a nice intense beefy flavor, although it could use more cheese on the crouton. Overall, everything was very good, but I was somewhat disappointed by the Belgium beers. Brabo has all bottled beers, unlike Beck, which always have several choices on draft. I asked if they plan to have some beer on draft in the future and they said no.
