My husband was upstairs and I was watching the game downstairs, and when that play unfolded, I screamed, "Oh my god, HOLY SHIT" so loudly and enthusiastically that Jason came running - he thought something awful had happened. Just when you think you've seen the limit of Andrelton Simmons' reach, he goes and does something like that. I think Travis d'Arnaud was in total disbelief - like, "He did that to me AGAIN???" Love it. Just Simba being Simba. :-)

To christen our new grill (for those interested, we opted for the Weber E-210 propane grill - it is small, but it packs a pretty good punch and has a cool setup where you can remove the center grate plate and put down a griddle, pizza stone, etc.), tonight we did steak sandwiches with NY strip, sauteed peppers and onions, and provolone cheese. Yum. Such a perfect day for being outside!
  3. I'm not really wedded to gas OR charcoal at this point - either way, we are going to have to lug something heavy to/from the store when it's time for refills. I want something that is easy enough to use that I'll actually, you know, USE it...but also something versatile enough that it offers the opportunity to try some new things.
  4. Watershed is just terrible. Even when we realized that the food was no bueno, we still figured, "Hey, at least it's an okay place to have a couple of beers, right?" WRONG. Among the worst service we've ever experienced at a bar - alternating between completely inattentive and in-your-face obnoxious. When we would walk to the Big Board, we would pass Indigo and TD Burger, which are across from one another on K Street NE. Indigo, inevitably, would be PACKED (and would smell delicious, of course), and TD Burger would be like a ghost town. The neighborhood is CLAMORING for more.

  6. Any new products/info that would be helpful in figuring out which grill to buy? The last time I had a deck/backyard, I just had a hand-me-down gas grill. I don't think I'll be doing heavy smoking (though having the option would be nice), but I like the idea of a piece of equipment that does things I can't do indoors. I know people who are gaga about their BGEs, but then others who prefer a more traditional grill. I generally only cook for 2, but it would be nice to have the capacity to put more food on when we entertain. Any thoughts/recs are much appreciated!
  7. I lived in NoMa for 2 years, and I do not know where the "so many restaurants" are - unless you are lumping other neighborhoods in? We always felt that restaurants/bars were exactly what were missing from NoMa. With all of the apartments and disposable income, it amazed us that we had to go to other neighborhoods to eat and drink.

  9. Awesome, thanks for all the info so far! I'll definitely come back as I have questions. I haven't gone out and measured the plot, but eyeballing it, it looks like about 6 feet by 3 feet? We have a whole separate plot for the group to grow herbs, so I probably won't plant any in my individual plot. But, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, hot peppers, that all sounds great. Someone also said that the previous owners grew strawberries very successfully.
  10. So...is this the topic in which to chat about beginner gardening? We just had our first community garden meeting (our plot came with our house), and I am excited to learn but don't really know where to start. We'll be having our community work day (to clean up from winter, weed, and put down wood chips) at the end of March.
  11. Made some St. Patrick's Day treats for the office - Guinness cupcakes with Bailey's cream cheese frosting. They came out really well! Recipe from Skinnytaste, so while they are not healthful, they could be a lot worse.
  12. To me, there are two categories of butchering our national anthem - the obvious one, in which the singer just flat-out cannot sing, and the other one, in which the singer has talent and decides to embellish. They are both offensive to me, as a person who spent years performing the song as written (and quite well, if I do say so myself ). I will grant that it is an extremely challenging song to sing - I honestly prefer when sporting events opt for instrumental versions of the anthem, as I find them to be much truer to the correct version.

    Musicals

    I am very partial to Guys and Dolls, though I'm not sure how old your son is - it has lots of gambling in it, and some veiled references to other "sins," but I feel like it's pretty tame compared to some other topics in classic movie musicals.
  14. Last night was Ann Burrell's garlic chicken with Israeli couscous - I saw it on "The Best Thing I Ever Made" on Food Network this weekend, and it looked so good that I had to try it. The only bummer was that the roasted garlic paste seemed to come off the chicken when I sauteed it. It ended up in the couscous, so that tasted amazing, but the chicken itself was a bit bland. Not sure how to solve that one...I could marinate it for longer, I guess, or maybe I could reserve some paste to re-apply on top of the chicken while it is baking?
  15. After a kind of "dud" week of Blue Apron, there were two dishes in my most recent delivery that were awesome - roasted poblano chilaquiles and miso-yuzu-glazed black cod with black rice. I even kept the recipe card for the chilaquiles, because it would be super simple to recreate it from "regular" ingredients (and I could eat chilaquiles every day of the week). The cod was really tasty, and my husband marveled at the black rice - again, I think one of the benefits of the service is to try out new ingredients (grains, produce, whatever) in a less wasteful (and idiot-proof) way.
  16. What a small world - I was born in Huntington and also lived in Northport. Depending on the years you were there, you probably interacted with my grandma at some point - she worked in restaurants in Huntington her whole life, and I continue to meet people who remember her.
  17. Couldn't talk the husband into it, sadly, but I appreciate all of the feedback and advice! I will probably just end up going by myself one of these days. When my sister moved across the country, I lost my most reliable sushi buddy.
  18. So, if one were contemplating walking into Sushi Capitol (tonight, for example), what do folks think the wait would look like? I know it's a small place, but we're just two and tend to prefer bar seating anyway. I've been dying to try it, but my non-sushi-loving husband needs some convincing.

  20. Last night was a quick one-pot chicken and rice with onions, peppers, cayenne, soy sauce, and basil. Not bad, but the rice must have been on the shelf for a while, since it took FOREVER to cook. The night before was supposedly a one-pot Spanish chicken and potatoes. Unfortunately, it fell pretty short - the texture of the sauce (which had tomatoes, onions, garlic, and eggplant) was off (probably due to my crummy blender), the potatoes cooked unevenly, and the flavors just seemed "meh." The chicken was nice and tender, though, since it was a braise - what I think I'll do with the leftovers is separate the sauce from the chicken, give the chicken a quick browning, and then heat up the sauce with some butter and other spices - then I'll hit it with my immersion blender to try to smooth it out.
  21. When we were living in NoMa, our rotation was mostly The Big Board and Impala. Now that we are in Hill East, we still hit up Impala pretty regularly (it's easier to get to the eastern side of H street from where we live now), but instead of The Big Board, we hit up either Matchbox or Molly Malone's, both of which have excellent beer selections (our primary criterium). We also go to Beauchert's fairly frequently (in fact, I had a crazy dream about the restaurant and our favorite bartender last night). When the weather warms up and walking isn't so gosh darned unpleasant, I suspect we will hit up Copycat Co. on H and also some of the places closer to the Capitol more often. We definitely need to add some variety to the list - I need to take hubby to Sushi Capitol to see if he can find enough that he likes to add it to the rotation.
  22. What a fun thread! I love these "back story" types of posts. We all have so much more in common than we think at first blush. As for me... Born in Huntington, NY (Long Island), in the same hospital where my dad was born. He and my mom were high school sweethearts. Moved to Alpharetta, GA (northern suburb of ATL), at age 6 - stayed there until I graduated from HS. Went to college in Athens, GA. Also lived in Madrid, Spain, for 4 months during my junior year. Went to law school in Knoxville, TN. Moved to DC right after law school - lived in Bethesda for a year, then at 16th and V NW for 2 years. Had my first date with my now-husband at Aroma lounge (now Ripple). Moved back to ATL in 2008 for hubby's job, and spent almost 5 years there (most of which was in Gwinnett county). Moved back to DC in early 2013 - lived in NoMa until December 2014, when we bought a house in Hill East. :-)
  23. I have had two weeks of Blue Apron deliveries since my post above, and I remain really pleased with the recipes/products. Last night was a really tasty chicken pot pie with sage drop biscuits - so satisfying on a cold February evening. Tuesday night was shrimp po'boys, in honor of Mardi Gras - not as good as the real thing, but way easier and faster to prepare (and healthier). My only minor quibbles are that portion sizes seem to really vary - some meals create two reasonable portions, and others have way more left over. Also, some of the recipes require a LOT of pots and pans (with numerous components cooking at once) - not the worst thing in terms of efficiency, but no fun in terms of clean-up!

  25. Had a delightful dinner at Beauchert's on Saturday night - great service as always. Sad that the jerks sitting next to us sent almost everything back and were really patronizing about it (in addition to elbowing me with every movement). There was nothing mind-blowingly original about the roasted pork dish - after all, pork + apple + shallot is a time-tested and delicious combination - but everything was executed perfectly and it was exactly what I was hoping for on a night that felt more like fall than winter. And, I have to thank Donovan behind the bar for introducing me (not this visit, but still...) to my favorite after-dinner treat these days...cardamaro. It made me so happy to sip a glass of that and enjoy the not-too-sweet creme brulee. Yum!
