  1. Hi, We're checking out the private rooms at Citronelle and Restaurant Eve today. It will be lunchtime sometime between those stops. Can anyone recommend a quick bite to eat on the way from Cit to RE? We won't have time for a sit down thing...counter service preferred.
  2. What is the best restaurant/site for a very small wedding (~22 guests)? Food and ambiance are of equal value. I think that Citronelle and 2941 will work. Anything else?
  3. Thanks mdt and Waitman. It's for radiology research, not Andrew Zimmern-type culinary activities. Still, the fresher the better and it needs to still have the brain. Does anyone have any idea how much said head would cost?
  4. Can anyone recommend a good place near 1st Mariner Arena? Price and cuisine totally open. Thanks! --- NB - 1st Mariner Arena was named Highest Grossing Arena in the United States by Billboard Magazine.
  5. We had the turkey legs last year and thought them awful. Undercooked, tough, stringy.
  6. Thanks. I will check it out!
  7. We're entertaining on Saturday and one of the guests is German. I have done a visual riff that I call "German sushi" - a nigiri of fried potato topped with herring with a blanched green onion as the nori...horseradish sour cream to dip. I want to provide a little (emphasis on little) more variety and I plan to do a bias slice of wurst (maybe bockwurst) on the potato with some sweet german mustard to dip. I know of the German Gourmet in NoVA but I'm too lazy to go there unless I must. Can I get some passable wurst closer to MoCo? TIA
  8. Thanks all. An update. I bought a couple of crappy ones at Giant :hangshead: The recipe I made was cucumber/mango/several aromatics see Carol Blymire's post http://alineaathome.typepad.com/alinea_at_home/2009/03/cucumber-mango-several-aromatics.html While they were meh mangos, I'm not sure the leather is worth making. I'm going to try the recipe again with :shhhhh: mango leather from Trader Joes and see what happens.
  9. I'm going to make Alinea's mango/cucumber/aromatics dish...one of the few that looks doable by me.
  10. That was all good advice. We went to AG. The food was insipid but there was no problem when a big glass of water went on the floor (spilled by yours truly, not the baby).
  11. Thanks all. One of my coworkers recommended Austin Grill...they have high chairs, are noisy etc. My relatives do like Mexican. I know it's chainey but....?
  12. I was under the impression that octopus ink sucks.
  13. We ate there Saturday, also on a Costo run. Poolboy is right. The chicken was bland and greasy, with rubber skin. The sauces were not complex in flavor. I had the "famous" souvlaki. It, too, was underseasoned and the flatbread was strange. It was served on plain Japanese rice, not basmati. I would eat there again as opposed to Arby's or McDonalds but this was not good Peruvian chicken.
  14. My cousin, her husband, and their 15-month old daughter will be staying with us later this month. I'm planning on doing most of the cooking but I'm going to take her out for her birthday. Not being kid-friendly myself, I have no ideas. Could y'all recommend a restaurant more interesting than a chain, no more than $50 pp out the door, kid-friendly, and hopefully in the MoCo or NW DC area. Her birthday is on a Monday. Any ideas? TIA
  15. Who eats restaurant food on Memorial Day? Memorial Day food = cookout or picnic.
  16. Dunno if this is common knowledge but we were at Jaleo last night and they had a special. A substantial list of hot tapas for $4 each. Only at the bar and only between 4:30 and 7:00.
  17. Yeah, I know that and I know what anchovies taste like. This tasted more like some juice from some grilled fish dripped onto the greens. FWIW, I feel a little queasy today. Coulda been Urban, maybe something else I ate, maybe a viral thing, maybe hypochondriasis.
  18. I got an Urban Burger and a chicken tortilla salad for take out tonight (Hillandale location). The fiance likes their crabcakes (I dunno why) but they don't sell them at the SS location. The burger was good but not great...not dissimilar from Rockville. The salad had a fishy taste...like they had grilled some fish before or something. It didn't taste like rotten fish so we ate it but it wasn't a good chicken caesar. I used to really like to Rockville location. Depending on what happens tonight (GI-wise), I'll go with the BBQ stuff next time.
  19. Thanks all. We're pressed for time so we're going with the shortcake suggestion. I got some ideas for some great bakeries though - thanks. Anyone like Stella's in Rockville?
  20. I know the food kinda sucks (although we love the brunch) but the Roof Terrace Restaurant at the Kennedy Center has a great view for someone who hasn't been here before.
  21. Unexpected guest coming over tonight. I need to get a decent dessert. I'm not a big fan of Bread and Chocolate and I'm not sure if they're open until 6 PM or so. Any ideas? Am I stuck with a crappy Safeway cake or pie?
  22. I know it is not super exotic but I'm surprised no one has said Vegas yet.
  23. We were in Boston a couple of weeks ago. Here are my impressions: Clio - supposedly the best retso in Boston. Unfortunately, we did not go super hungry so we passed on the tasting menu and went a la carte. I think that was a huge mistake. The tasting menu looked superb. I had marinated yellowtail and yellowfin. It was too salty. She had the terrine of foie gras that had some interesting dehydrated fruits...I think strawberry? It was delicious but a large portion. For mains, she had a licorice duck dish and I had a halibut dish. Both competent but nothing exceptional. For dessert, I had a raspberry creamsicle and she had some kind of gelee of fruit that was rolled...delish and this superb, really superb blackberry sorbet. EVOO http://www.evoorestaurant.com/ in Somerville, MA. Here was the 8-course tasting menu (I'm missing a few items, sauces, and accoutrements- this is from memory). House terrine with pickles and whole-grain mustard Braised tongue, potato croquette, habanero hollandaise Salad with rabbit confit Lamb's head soup Pork skin risotto/arancini with pan seared scallop House-made BBQ sauce, chicken sausage, plantains, onion pickle Local ashed-goat cheese with honey Beignet with fresh berries and whipped cream The food was expertly prepared and plated and we got the accompanying wine flight (one wine per course - good thing we took a cab). What does this meal cost? $60 ($90 with the wine flight). Summer Shack - honestly I was disappointed. I made a point of getting a chowder (NE clam). It was thin (which I understand to be authentic) but the flavor was not as good as (gasp) Legal Seafood and the clams were sandy. She had crabcakes which were had too much pasty filler and used a low quality crab. For entrees, I had a Chilean sea bass and she had scrod. The scrod was delicious; the bass- inadequately seasoned.
