  1. Just about every football game Ive ever watched there comes a time when someone is running with the ball (frequently the quarterback) holding it out from his body, palming it and swinging it around and lots of times this ends up in a fumble or darned close. At this point the announcers say " he was carrying that ball like a loaf of bread!" REALLY? I've been in grocery stores for 60 years now and I've never seen anyone carry a loaf of bread palming it and swinging it around, have you? Thats the last way I'd ever think of carrying bread...... I'm jus sayin........
  2. Circulation not only delivers oxygen but other vitals chemicals such as glucose , ions, etc not to mention taking AWAY waste products. In direct conflict with your thought is the newly recommended CPR procedure not involving any breaths given to a person in cardiac arrest but rather just constant chest compressions (which probably does move some air in and out of the lungs anyhow).
  3. Already knew this one...... but here is a nutty story about me filling up a rental car outside BWI a few years back. Pulled into gas station, knowing the gas cap was on the drivers side. Looked for fuel release lever..... no its not on the side of the seat. OK maybe I missed it, not on the left of drivers seat, maybe on the right? No, how about under the middle? No not there either. OK how about under the dash near the hood release? Or in the glove compartment maybe where the old fashioned trunk buttons used to be? Hell no, and Im crawling around the outside of the car now with the drivers and passengers door opened looking for the damned thing. IM OUT OF GAS AT THE GAS STATION AND CANT FILL UP! OK maybe the owners manual in the glove compartment...... NO OWNERS MANUAL!!! Asked the gas station guy to help...... clueless although I must say he did as good as the driver (me). Called back to the rental car place..... a lot of "on holds" later they tell me what turns out to be the answer...........I am still pizzed about where it was...........RELEASE LEVER WAS UNDER THE FLOOR MAT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE! wtf ???? Anyone ever seen or heard of anything so bizzare?
  4. Why did the Addams Family have the Munsters? Why did Chubby Checker have Fats Domino? Why did Johnny Cash have Eddie Money (or even Johnny Paycheck for that matter?). Why did McDonalds have Burger King? Wendys have Judys? Hell, why did Hannukah get so popular in the USA (with Christmas being at the same time or close)? Why did Hampshire, York, Jersey and even England itself become New? Why did my parents have more kids after they already had the perfect one??? LOL We all imitate each other even when we think we are being original, and theres nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you can even improve the product and hopefully everyone gives their versions a personal spin. But in a sense, the world is just one gigantic Tribute Band playing oldies but goodies (and unfortunately sometimes Badies as well!) And on a completely different note.... laughed my ass off at your review about the Super Pollo experience on DC Dining.... I actually look forward to when your meals totally suck so you can tear somebody a new one!!!
  5. Great posts and thanks Don for even including me in the same breath as these other guys who are some of the greatest pure shooters in the history of basketball but relatively unknown. I watched Buzzy at his camp one summer and he had a lot of great tips for even seasoned professionals. His tryout for the 76ers as a shooting coach where he made something like 248 of 251 3 pointers in front of the team while giving a lecture.... with the guys going crazy yelling and falling out while he did it sounds like BS but its real and he got the job as shooting coach on the spot! Later he tried with limited success to help Shaq with his free throw shooting working for the Orlando Magic. I have one small "two cents" to throw in about shooting based on my own personal experience trying to analyze how to shoot long distance more easily. Most jump shooters are using their arm (or arms if their technique isnt right) to get power in the shot at the height of their jump.... and its not a bad thing because what good is it to be accurate if you get your shot blocked back in your face? However, the earlier you release the ball, the more you can use your LEGS to get distance on the ball and so you can shoot a hell of a lot farther out then a high release using more arm. So if you are just shooting around with no one on you or in a game wide open, its much easier to use a lower release and BEND YOUR KNEES to get more free power on the shot. If you dont believe me, try it and see. I figured this out on my own and it does work... experiment with shooting flat footed with no knee bend or try shooting from a chair for zero leg assistance and see what I mean. You still need proper technique when shooting ( for a right hander, left hand helps support the ball only and thumb never turns towards the basket on the shot... as per Buzzy..... or you are tossing in a variable that doesnt need to be there and can only hurt you. So to me, most long shooting breaks down because you are straining to get enough distance and it messes up your natural shooting form. Its easier to maintain your form with a deep knee bend and lower release and hence be more accurate from farther out. Curry has combined this with extreme quickness and his little darting move IN then BACK before he releases the ball, catching the defenders going the wrong way while hes shooting. He also doesnt wait to see how they respond to his move, he just does it and shoots assuming they will not keep up, which they usually dont. As Morgan Wooten said...."The "actor" wins, the "reactor" loses!" This only works well over the long haul if they are afraid you might drive past them, since if they are not afraid of that they just stay in your face and you cant ever get any shots off at all. One final basketball observation ...... even though Wooten gave that actor/reactor tip to help your offense, Ive had a lot of success on defense using that by making the first moves as far as intercepting passes or stealing the ball and it can drive people nuts (or make you look bad depending on the situation!) . Last statement..... Wooten also said..... "The first time you get the ball on offense, drive to the basket. It will open up your outside shot for the rest of the day." great advice..... kind of like ripping the ball down the alley in doubles tennis first service return of the day!
  6. My understanding is that neither side can bat the ball out intentionally anywhere on the field, not just the end zone. Maybe I can see if its the offense, but defense? Anyhow, the ref on site missed the call but they covered for him and said "he thought it was by accident"! Hahaha he didnt know the rule any more than we did! Had that deer in the headlights look on his face! And so why didnt they reverse it? My theory is that batting the ball intentionally involves a penalty..... no flag was thrown, so there was no penalty and nothing that was reviewable! You cant go back on a video tape and call a penalty like holding or pass interference if no flag was thown, so the ref blew it and they had to cover his butt. Still a stupid rule if you ask me..........
  7. Does anyone really believe that Seahawks player hit that ball out of the end zone accidentally? And why is this even a rule? Why penalize anyone for knocking the ball out of bounds any time they want, especially if its the defense? comments folks............... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLL1ByAJb6M
  8. I think that the best overall athletes in the world play professional tennis. I know you've got people going crazy now saying LeBron James, Tom Brady, Mike Trout could kick their butts, however ... think about it. Speed. Endurance. Flexibility. Strategy. Mental Toughness. Strength. What sport do you know thats one-on-one, lasts for multiple hours, and by the end they are still slugging it out at full speed? Just look at the bodies on these men and women.... the fittest of them all! Or would you rather look like an NFL lineman? There really is no other sport that combines ALL of these things so completely. And now let the screaming begin ... HAHAHAH ... but you see I just wanted to go down in history as the first poster on the Open Forum and now my legacy is secured!
  9. You have a niece who was right across from Macy's for the parade today! Weather was cold but clear and a great time! The balloons did not blow anyone out into the Atlantic........
  10. After many many years of getting whipsawed back and forth by people blowing smoke one way or the other, I have learned that opinions are just that..... and facts are something totally different. "Gold is going to $5000" "Obama is terrible" " This restaurant sucks!" You can get burried in bullshit in a free market if you let yourself take all the blather too seriously....so..... read and enjoy, the more the better...... but...... in the end you've got to decide for yourself what is right and not let the loudest voices do it for you! Peace!
  11. Jimmy Dietsch was THE MAN in duckpins back in the 1960s! Jerrys Subs were great, Id forgotten about them. Speaking of ice cream joints, anyone remember Wileys? (not sure if I spelled it right). This was a sit down ice cream shop that had about a 10 page menu of different sundaes, most of which were enormous and cleverly named (like THE THING) including one called I BET YOU CANT where they gave you some inordinately large amount of scoops and if you finished it up all by yourself it was free. They had all the oversized dishes stacked around the counter most of them looking more like feeding troughs or gigantic flower vases. I think it was in Langley Park or maybe Tacoma Park.......... also remember in the 60s a pre Bonanza type place called The Charcoal House that had some pretty good flame broiled steaks for low dollars. Anyone remember the Luau Hut in Silver Spring? Back in the day, that was fine dining.........my Dad told me he was eating lunch there one day and honest to God a safe came crashing through the roof! Apparently dropped from a crane or something like that.......this was the place that had the drinks with the little parasols in them, and of course the flaming Poo Poo Platter.....with tiny skewers of beef and chicken that you roasted in a crackling fire......for a kid this was AWESOME. Thanks for responding to the thread and hope youre doing well at Reston!
  12. #1 Sammys Villa pizza joint with the stereotypical photos of Sammy and his Super Suntan along with various Hollywood celebs and gangstas Best Pizza ever and Best Steak Sub ever! #2 the original Giffords Ice Cream parlor in downtown Silver Spring.......what better place to go after a trip to Bonanza Coins???? Never had another "Swiss Sundae" that could compare.......or the good old hot butterscotch sundae where they brought you the syrup in a little hot vat that you poured on yourself........YEAH BABY! #3 Hot Shoppes JR.......a hamburger joint with very unique and delicious burgers. I was once ejected for jumping over the counter to get a free drink refill and didnt want to wait for the guy to come back. Ah the impetuousness of youth.............. #4 Big Eds Pizza.........mostly remembered as a local Little League team sponsor for years, they promised us free pizza for every win, free cokes after every loss. THE ENTIRE YEAR WE HAD COKES!!! Last game they relented and we had pizza anyhow! Big Ed had a memorable death watching an Orioles game at Texas,Had a heart attack, and died in the stands.......they couldnt haul him out cause he was TOO DAMNED BIG! #5 White Oak Bowling Alley EAT N BOWL.........pretty damned good burgers off the grill there, although you had to compare them to the vending machine burgers that you heated up in a toaster oven , those were the most rubbery tasteless sandwiches ever contrived by a mad scientist!!!!! Im sure my arteries narrowed 0.1% for every one I ate................. #6 Hot Fudge Sundae at Highs Dairy store in White Oak.......in later years a great place to buy eggs for our nightly battles and misdeeds............. Im sure I could think of more but enough about all that health food I had as a kid.......................................
  13. What did you invent, a time machine? If so, pick me up a T206 Wagner in 1909. Thanks. RR
  14. Jacksonville Chart House is still a good option for good food and drinks on the riverfront. City Pub next to the sports/concert arena has gotten some good reviews also although Im not sure about the food since Ive never been there, and it may have more of a "Sports Bar " feel than you would want. "bb's" is another nice place not far away from where you are........good food, atmosphere, not a pub but an eaterie (but a bar area is available) ........for an adventure you could go to The Landing which is also close to where you would be, this is a Rouse corporation riverfront mall which has minimal shopping but a number of eateries with views of the St Johns, youd have to take a peek inside each to see if they fit your bill. They have turned over a number of times and range from inexpensive to chic with even a Hooters thrown in if this is your fancy. Weather should be warm and clear by the time you are here so enjoy yourself! NiceD
  15. It seems to be the current ethic at many eateries, at least many moderately priced ones, to grab your plate with the pithy comment STILL WORKIN ON THAT???? Hey, its dinner, not work, and hell no Im not finished yet cant you see? If you say Im still eating thank you............3 minutes later they are grabbing the bread, butter, dipping oil, salad and saying LET ME GET SOME OF THIS OUT OF THE WAY FOR YOU. Saturday Night Live could do a comedy sketch about this behavior.......................................
  16. To paraphrase St Vincent dePaul............... Pray often, overlook much, try to improve yourself a little bit each day. Part 2 is hard................it is always easiest to concentrate on how much someone else SUX and thereby avoid examination of ones own suckosity! NiceDocter
  17. Perhaps a few kind comments to your server at your local eatery followed by a healthy tip (over and above the usual) might go a long way to make someones rough day a little nicer? just a thought......................
  18. Still here in Jacksonville and can help with any food questions for traveling or vacationing friends. Good luck and happy dining. NiceDocter
  19. As a Jacksonville resident for the last 25 years and someone who has seen the franchise grow from one store to what it is now, I would say.......Theme A Price B Food C+. Not bad if you like your subs steamed and mushy. Subway is better and another original Jacksonville sub franchise named Larrys Giant Subs which has also expanded rapidly over the last 20 years is better quality according to most. Good luck and happy subbing! NiceDocter
  20. Wendys.......had 2 items off the dollar menu. Used the money I saved to take PepsidAC later on... Next day.......Subway 5 dollar special That night......Firehouse Subs chefs salad to go ( used my own salad dressing) a nice bowl of Breyers with Dove hot fudge to wash it down to drink I highly reccomend the Zephyrhills water dont forget to take your baby asprin and your fish oil .................the Docter
  21. One sip and your drink, marriage, and career are all on the rocks.
  22. Jacksonville As a Jacksonville resident for the last 20 years........I can offer some help..........but you didnt say what you are looking for. At the Beaches, the Right Spot is inexpensive, home style food well prepared in a casual setting. In Avondale are 2 slightly upscale restaurants, the Brick and Sterlings, both of which have good food and service although the Brick may be a bit crowded on the seating. Downtown of course you have the big three steakhouses Ruths Cris, Mortons (not nearly as good by the way IMHO), and a newer one Plaza Three. For seafood, downtown you have the Chart House which is good quality and moderately priced, River City Brewing Company which is your basic steak-seafood ontheriver place, and a number of other medium priced places to choose from. Cafe Carmon in San Marco near downtown is great for a nice dessert and coffee or dinner. If you could be more specific on what area of town or what type of eatery you are looking for I can try and add more info. Good luck and Happy Dining! NiceDocter@aol.com
