lovehockey
15 people only. Respond here if you want to come. If you want to bring others, tell me your number, but keep it 4 or under. It's a Saturday, so I cannot show as much as I could on a weekday, but it's less busy. If demand is extraordinary, I'll add a tour at 2 p.m. I will not add the 2 p.m. unless the 11 a.m. is full. --- [Note to people seeing this from Twitter: This is a $FREE$ tour given by one of the foremost experts on the Capitol Building, out of the kindness of her heart. There's no admission, and no tipping. You'll see things that normal tours don't provide, and it's all free - all you need to do is sign up, become a member, and register. But hurry! It's limited to 15 people, so do it now - on Dec 31, 2015, you'll look back upon this as one of the highlights of your entire year. Cheers, Rocks.]

DanielK
It is the best Capitol tour you will ever take. Clear your schedule and go! [ETA: blb, that wasn't aimed at you - it was a generic call to everyone]
darkstar965
Big agree! Lovehockey not only loves hockey. She's also a fabulous hostess and interpretor of the Capitol and it's history. We loved this tour two years ago.

Ilaine
In. Plus one. Last time I had to bow out due to mobility issues. Still have mobility issues. Walking with a cane but can do stairs if they have railings. Thank you so much.
lovehockey
I'd love to attend, and bring my son - how long is the tour?? Thanks for doing this again! Nancy Since it's a Saturday and there are a couple less things to see than on a weekday, probably around an hour, no more than an hour and a half. Depends on how chatty I get. DonRocks
I'm going to tweet about this tour next week, probably a couple of times, so members: You should assume that it's going to fill up, but you have this weekend to make up your minds. My houseguest went on a tour this week - some things are closed off, including much of the dome (Brumidi's "Apotheosis of George Washington" is still visible at the very top), so this tour won't give you the best visual - however, the Capitol is going to be closed completely for awhile, so get it while the getting's good. They're repairing the cast-iron dome, and apparently, removing lead paint, so they've draped over the inside to protect people - or something like that (your tour guide will know). Also, they're adding an electrical-shock system outside to keep the birds off. lovehockey, what are the flowers in the Jefferson Library of Congress building on the panels of the dome? lovehockey
From July 25-September 10 the 2nd floor will be closed (this includes the Rotunda, Statuary Hall, and the Old Senate Chamber) as they install scaffolding and protection around all of the artwork and statues in the Rotunda for the next round of dome repair. Right now there's just a large canopy covering a good chunk of the Apotheosis. Since the Rotunda and Statuary Hall are the two most popular tour spots, this is a big deal. The first floor, which includes the Crypt, the Old Supreme Court Chamber, the Brumidi Corridors, and the Cox Corridors, will be open, although I don't know if the Capitol Guide Service will include the latter two as part of the standard tour during the 2nd floor closure. During the August recess, the House and Senate galleries will be open Monday-Friday. As for your question, Don, I believe they're rosettes. Ilaine
Well, I figured out how to access the Capitol. There is a shuttle service from the corner of Independence and First, upon request. That's only about a block from the Capital South Metro. And there are wheelchairs available on request, if that would fit in with your tour. However, the tour seems like it will conflict with the annual DC Crawfish Boil (noon-five) for which I have already bought tickets. So, giving up my two spots for someone else, in favor of crawfish, jambalaya, and Abita beer. Y'all have a good time! I know I will, if I can only avoid breaking my thumbnails, again. Last two crawfish boils I had a split thumbnail. Split thumbnails and spicy crawfish are not a good match.

As another aside, because llaine brought it up, if you have mobility problems I can and will do my best to accommodate you. There are elevators galore and wheelchairs available for use, along with some shuttle service.
Soup
My parents were just telling me last week that they would love to see the capital building. They are 75 & 70 and have never been inside. I would love to take them. 3 for me please and thank you. Soup
pjnewman
Lovehockey- We are looking forward to your tour. We haven't been to the Capitol since the construction of the new visitor's center. Are we meeting in the visitor's center or at a different location? Let us know. Also, as a token of appreciation we'd love to take you to lunch after the tour if you are available (and other DR participants are welcome). We can discuss your favorite Capitol Hill restaurants at the end of the tour. Thanks again. - Paul

Soup
LoveHockey, Thank you. Spoke with my parents and unfortunately they cannot make it into town. My appologies. They were really bummed, as well. Please take us off the list (that is 3 people) and I hope we didn't create more issues for you. This is a generous offer and I hope other can take advantage. Again thank you. pjnewman
Lovehockey - Thank you for the wonderful tour this past Saturday. I've been to the Capitol before (pre-CVC) and never gotten as much insight into the building, its history and artifacts as I did with you. Thanks again. - Paul

ol_ironstomach
Lovehockey - thanks for sharing so many tales of the building and its inhabitants. Not that the regular tours aren't very well done, but yours is special! If only our feet would allow another hour or two of checking out the corridors...
