  1. I've tried Tavira several times because our daughter lives in Lisbon. We travel there several times a year and eat out a lot and love the food in Portugal. Tavira has always been a disappointment, but maybe it's just me.
  2. Thanks you all. I like your advice!
  3. That was probably the Omega. We used to eat there a lot in the 70's, as well as at La Plaza (loved their ceviche!).
  4. Week 2 - 1 more pound. (Restaurant Week #@!#*!!) 14 to go.
  5. My son and his wife are planning a ski trip to Utah and need advice on where to eat in Park City. Any suggestions?
  6. Thank you all for the suggestions. I just located some Konstatin Frank at Cleveland Park Wines & Liquors, which takes care of what I need (Christmas present).
  7. I'm looking for some wine from the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Anyone know where to find it around town?
  8. Last October we had an incredible lunch at D'O in Cornaredo 14 kms west of Milan. The personable young chef, Davide Oldani, came and chatted with us and helped us select both food and wine. I had been advised to reserve 3 months before my visit, and when I called the restaurant in the evening, got a recording saying to call at 10 am for reservations. So, I did get up at 4 am to call Italy, spoke with the chef and got the reservation (6 weeks beforehand). Very definitely worth the effort!!! It's not expensive, but don't let that discourage you. They're closed Sun. night and all day Monday. Don't take credit cards. Might be closed for vacation in Dec. or beginning of Jan. Tel. 02/9362209 Just stumbled on a site "todine.net" which makes reservations for you. Haven't tried it so don't know if it works. .
  9. Our Naples pizza experiences: Friday night - feeling very frazzled after the utter chaos of driving in Naples, we walked to a place whose name translates to "Buffalo Brothers," close to our B&B and recommended by the proprietor. Good Italian pizza, not extraordinary. Saturday lunch - da Michele. We got the Margherita with double mozzarella (on the recommendation of the policeman from Ancona who sat across from us). This is superb pizza, delicious in every way. Could not be improved upon! Sunday night most pizza places were closed so we opted for Lombardi a Santa Chiara. It's a "vera pizza Napolitana" place although with more topping choices and was very good. Clear winner - da Michele! We also had dinner Sat. night at Da Dora. It's a friendly, bustling place with excellent seafood, and in the middle of the evening, Dora herself broke into song and serenaded her patrons with Neapolitan favorites. It's a bit expensive, but seafood usually is in Italy. Anyway we loved it. We had 3 or 4 truly wonderful meals at small places in the hinterlands of Campania and Molise. If anyone plans a trip in that direction, I"ll happily fill you in!
  10. Wonderful article link, Joe. Thanks. An E-Gulleteer raves about Salvo, so I have 3 or 4 top spots to choose from.
  11. We've been to Pepe's and Modern Apizza on State Street. Check this website for a picture of their bottom crust. The pizza we had at Comet Ping-Pong was very good, except for the burnt bottom.
  12. My husband and I went for dinner tonight. We went with high hopes. It's not far from where we live, we love New Haven style pizza. We really wanted to like it. We liked the look - a riff on ping pong tables, industrial style (flaking paint, exposed beams, interesting light fixtures). There is no menu other than a board above the counter with very basic information and no prices listed. (?) We ordered a salad, two pizzas, beer and wine. The wine is generic and is served in what I'd call a juice glass ($5). We had a Caesar salad that was fine if maybe a bit heavily dressed. Our pizzas looked great on top, but after the first bite we said, "hmm, tastes burnt." The bottom crusts were 90% black - not blistered here and there, but black. My husband decided to turn his in, because why eat a burned pizza and go home angry? They did replace it for him, but our server came to the table and insisted that because of the heat of the wood-burning oven, and the corn meal on the crust bottom, they were supposed to be that way. I just think they haven't figured out how to do it right yet. The replacement pizza was much better. Then we got our bill, and were charged for an extra glass of wine, which is not such a big deal, but is annoying. Of course they fixed it when we pointed it out, but we left feeling disappointed. Darn.
  13. Thanks all for the suggestions. Da Dora sounds wonderful. We'll be there 3 days and won't eat only pizza! Also good link to a very interesting web site.
  14. Rodman's (Wisconsin Ave. NW DC) has some nice Italian wines at excellent sale prices for the next week - Zardetto Prosecco, Vitiano Falesco, Zenato Pinot Grigio, Di Majo Norante Sangiovese, Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti - all at well under $10.00. Check 'em out!
  15. We're planning 3 days in Naples later this month and are hoping to try several of the classic Neapolitan pizza places, as well as other trattorias. Does anyone have any recent experience there? We're also venturing into Molise - Campobasso where 2 Gambero Rosso "Red" restaurants are located, and Bojano - where there's one. Ending with a night at the Torre Gaia "Wine Resort" in Campania near Dugenta. I know this is pretty much off the beaten track, but maybe someone else here has explored there?
  16. We have a gift certificate for dinner here. Any updates since March?
  17. Just keep going back to The Pines of Rome, Bethesda - since we moved here in 1973! Used to mix in the dear departed Fio's.
  18. Have you tried the Gambero Rosso web site? If you know some Italian, you can register and search for restaurant and travel information by province. I always buy their current guide when we travel to Italy, as it's not available in the US, and follow their restaurant suggestions with great success. Their "red" restaurants - "oscar for quality and price" - are standouts. We go out of our way to try them and are never disappointed! It so happens that there are currently 3 of them in Molise: Risorta Locanda del Castello in Bojano, Civita Superiore; Vecchia Trattoria da Tonino in Campobasso; and L'Elfo in Capracotta. They probably have web sites, or I could give you more info if you want to PM me.
  19. "I posted over on eG and did not get much of a response" - It was I who did answer your query, and urge you to visit Ribo for a great meal and great experience as well. Maybe you should start an "Abruzzo and Molise" thread here? Molly
  20. Gambero Rosso also recommends Marinelli da Vittorio. They rate it one point less for food, but price of a meal (without wine)is listed at Euro 48, and Euro 70 at Acero Rosso. Several years ago, we stayed in Poggio Berni (16 km up in the hills) at I Tre Re. It's an inn and restaurant and the food was wonderful. GR also likes a trattoria, La Greppia, in Coriano - closed Tuesdays, average meal Euro 30. Regrettably, we didn't get to Uliassi.
  21. We're flying in and out of Auckland and will probably only get to the Marlborough area of the South Island due to time and weather constraints. Darn.
  22. Thanks for the tip on the National Geographic Traveler Magazine. It's a nice article with some good suggestions!
