  1. Just had lunch at a fairly new Chinese restaurant aptly named "Dim Sum". It's in the shopping plaza at Gaither Rd and Shady Grove Rd in what used to be the Hunan Palace. They serve dim sum all day and have other items on their menu including multiple variants of congee. Ordered off a menu for late Friday lunch, but it sounds like they have carts that go around on Saturday and Sunday lunchtime. Had several standard items (Sui Mai, BBQ pork buns, shrimp rice noodles, bean curd wraps, shrimp chive du pings). All pretty tasty and piping hot as they were made to order. Service was pretty standard although there was an issue with them not realizing my credit card is a Chip & Pin, not chip & signature and telling me that my card had been declined.
  2. We actually have a family tradition for both breakfast and dinner on Christmas Day. Breakfast is unsmoked polish sausage from Zup's grocery in Ely, MN, scrambled eggs, apple potica and walnut potica. This year we also had apricot potica. The apple potica is pastry style (think apple strudel) and the walnut and apricot are "bread" style. For dinner we always have bone in rib roast. This year sides included Parmesan risotto, popovers and roasted Brussels sprouts.
  3. The Columbus (OH) airport has been going thru renovations/upgrades. They've recently opened an Eddie George's a Grill in the B concourse after security. I had an excellent burger there earlier this month and was able to substitute a very nice side salad for the fries. There is lots of seating with a mix of regular and bar height tables and a fairly extensive menu for an airport establishment. CMH
  4. I also want to echo everyone's thanks to koolpaw for coordinating this event. We had a wonderful time meeting everyone and enjoyed all of the dishes. Our particular favorites were the pork belly, soup dumplings, dry fried eggplant, pea shoots and the shrimp.
  5. I (+1) will be attending the Mark Russell show at Ford's theater on Feb 18 and am looking for pre-theater restaurant suggestions in the walkable area. We will be going to Coco Sala for drinks/dessert after the show so I'm not really interested in the typical 3-course pre-theater menu. All food types, except Indian, are okay. Price isn't much of a factor. I was thinking about Central, but would welcome any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance.
  6. If there is still space, I (+1) would love to make this my first dr.com gathering after many years of mostly lurking.
  7. New Fortune is my go-to here in the DC area as much because its the most convenient as the fact that it is pretty good. I haven't tried Hollywood East. I did just have a swoon worthy lunch at Yank Sing in SF on Wednesday though. YUM!! Would have been better if I hadn't been by myself so I could have tried more things.
  8. Was able to score a last minute reservation yesterday for lunch at Central before going to the Newseum. Another excellent meal. Easy to see why this is one of the James Beard nominees for best new restaurant. My dining companion had the corned beef sandwich and I had the bacon cheeseburger and the macaroni and cheese. I must say that I normally like my hamburger on the medium to medium well side, even though I prefer my steak rare to med rare. If all burgers were like this one, I would be a convert to the med rare hamburger. It was so flavorful without being "drippy", which is my main reason for a more well done burger. And the macaroni and cheese was out of this world. So rich and creamy. It was impossible to eat more than half the serving. Even my mother, who doesn't really care for mac-n-cheese loved this. Her corned beef sandwich was also fantastic. We finished up by splitting the kit kat bar, which should be a requirement of every meal at Central. The service was excellent and the meal was appropriately paced. We didn't feel rushed to complete so the table could be turned over for another late lunch reservation. I'm looking forward to going back to try other things on the menu. I wanted to see if all of the high praise for the burger was legit and I can say that I agree. There were so many other things that caught my attention it will be awhile before I venture back to the burger.
  9. First post from a long time lurker. Count me in as another who has seen the light about Ray's. My mother and I ate in the bar there last Saturday night and it was fabulous. The spiced cashews as a complimentary nibble were an indicator of the outstanding meal to come. She had the onion soup and I had the wedge salad. OMG, that had to be the best wedge salad I've ever had. The bacon was a great accent and the blue cheese dressign was just the right amount for the entire salad. Mom had the NY Strip and I had the special that was a smaller version of the Cowboy. Both steaks were amazing. The onions and the horseradish sauce that accompanied the cowboy were excellent. It was also nice to have a lighter version of creamed spinach. We finished off the evening with the coconut cake. We had enough leftovers for another two lunches. My only regret (not issue ) was not explicitly requesting that the onions be included when wrapping up my steak. I'd assumed that I wouldn't get the horseradish sauce, but thought the onions would have been in the box. As I'd expected from the previous posts, I knew this would be a great "value for money" restaurant with outstanding food and service, but I was still amazed at how good of a value it was. I will definitely be back and this restaurant is tops on my list of places to take my out of town guests even if it is a bit of a hike from where I live.
