Went to matchbox tonight "on a whim". Try the white pizza with prosciutto. But instead of prosciutto, have anchovies on the side. Mmmmmmmm.

Okay, so service and swallowability go a long way when it comes to Tex Mex in DC. I had the WORST food and the most unwelcoming service of my life at Austin Grill after An Inconvenient Truth on Wednesday. It was late and the people I was with don't really love their gullets as much as you love yours, so I bit my lip and invested in my company for the night. I'm pretty indifferent about Austin Grill (though I had stronger feelings in like 1994) and I my expectations are realistic. That said, I had to send back my dinner because the romaine in the salad tasted like it had mistakenly taken a swim in sanitizer (blue # 40). Ask all the pimps and whores: I'll eat anything when washed down with magaritas (so long as there's melted cheese near by-Tex Mex is my weakness), but this was foul and so was everything else we ordered. We felt so unwelcome and they kept telling us the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes and that it would soon be last call for drinks. That's all good, but why stay open if you're gonna be brisk and your food's gonna suck ventworm cock between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.? I don't think I've sent food back more than twice in my life, and it wasn't just me; I had everyone try it and we all agreed that it tasted like Homer Simpson made it (at the power plant). No one would touch their food after sampling my salad. I appreciate this place for its work with DC Central Kitchen, etc. and for giving people on the street a chance, but please don't give me chemicals anymore. And please, don't make me wait in the front like an idiot for 10 minutes upon arrival if you're fully-staffed. Yours truly, Panda Bearito

jandres (I *hate* it when I can't address our members by their first names, but I can't!), Am I reading the article correctly in that Thompson Hospitality owns Austin Grill, is closing it, and reopening Hen Quarter in the same location in July? [Well, I guess either way, Hen Quarter gets its own thread (oddly, had this been the last Austin Grill - and I assume that day will come - the existing thread would simply be renamed), so one day in the future, whichever restaurant replaces the final Austin Grill - assuming it, too, is owned by Thompson Hospitality - is going to have a *lot* of posts and views in its thread on day one. I use *such* a simple algorithm for using existing threads, or creating new ones, but regardless of its simplicity, its permutations are seemingly endless.]

Last night we headed out to Lebanese Taverna to use a Groupon coupon only to find it closed due to a water main break across the street. We quickly regrouped and headed to the new Cava Grille - same problem. At this point we should have cut our losses and headed home instead I let my wife convince to head to American Tap Room. I had been to the bar for drinks but have avoided eating there to date. We arrived close to 7 pm and the place was hopping both bar and restaurant. We got a table right away and seated near the window looking out on Woodmont Ave. Wife ordered the Tap Room Steak Salad. I did not try but it looked like a decent sized salad and the steak was cooked to the requested medium rare - large enough that she brought the leftovers home for lunch today. I decided to go with the crab cake. It was actually not as bad as I expected - decent size with little filler but underseasoned. It was served with some type of vegetable medley and red pepper cream sauce, which was just plain awful. I think the vegetables were frozen birds eye that you heat up in the microwave. Kids had the mini burger sliders and buttered noodles, which they said were good. Total for four people with 2 glasses of wine - $80. Service was friendly and attentive. Our server commented that they have the "best Turkey Burger in the area", I was not willing to take him up on his challenge. Too many other options in Bethesda to return here any time soon.

Mrs. TJ works in DC and, in the past, she has come home with wonderful goodies from Marvelous Market. Sometimes brownies. Sometimes gingerbread. Sometimes these fruit and nut crisps (think really crisp 'bread' slices of this stuff -- with salt!). Their stuff in general used to be like food-crack. So she stops by there last night and is completely dismayed that they had posted a sign that they were now outsourcing their bread production, in part, to a 3rd party bakery. Apparently it is not just the bread. Grrrrr.
