  1. The Takoma Park Farmers Market is every Sunday, from 10am-2pm, year round. Parking is fairly easy on the blocks in the neighborhood surrounding the market. There are strict rules about the fact that the vendors cannot sell before 10am.
  2. Yes, I know this is an April Fools gag- but popcorn popped in bacon fat STILL sounds swoonworthy, and like a project I would enjoy trying in my own kitchen
  3. Nicaro in Silver Spring is currently offering Restaurant.com coupons. $20 for a $50 off coupon on $100 spent. With the SAVE code it was $6 for the $50 coupon, which is a steal. We had a lovely dinner on Sunday night, the skate and veal cheeks were especially good.
  4. market opens for the season NEXT thursday...april 2.
  5. Anybody know what the Saturday hours are?? (calls to the phone number reach a full voicemail box) I have seen 1:30pm...but have also read references to breakfast and brunch..
  6. Would a Brita, or other home filter be able to remove these things from the water?
  7. We are looking for people who would like to sell cheese for Cherry Glen Farm at DC metro area farmers markets in the upcoming season. Please send me a PM if you are interested and we can discuss the details! Thank you Rachel
  8. Fall on the Farm The leaves are changing and the hormones are raging! It is breeding season and, um, love is in the air. Five months from now there will be little kids all over the place. But for now it’s quiet, cold, and dark. (Not quite as dark at 7am though- YAY! turning back the clocks.) The goats are wearing their winter coats, but the milk is still flowing, So there will be plenty of cheese for holiday parties. My adventure on the goat farm continues! Check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/cherryglenfarm/ for photos.
  9. Through a unbelievable set of circumstances, involving a teachers strike in Pennsylvania, I have an extra ticket to tonights Outstanding in the field dinner. You are welcome to join me, I WILL BE LEAVING TAKOMA PARK BY 330pm!!! PM me if you wanna come! Rachel
  10. We dont, sadly, have anyone selling fresh milk or cream, but we do have dairy and eggs at the Takoma Park Market!Smith Meadows Farm sells eggs, as does Ferry Landing Farm and Apiary. My favorite eggs are from Highfield Dairy, (they are blue and green!) and he also sells goat cheese and goat and cow yogurt. Keswick Creamy is at market with their cows milk cheeses and yogurt. And last, but certainly not least, is Cherry Glen Farm and our seven varieties of fresh and soft ripened goat cheese, including fresh ricotta!
  11. I figured in order to live up to my foodie moniker I should finally try favas. Picked up a box at the Takoma Market this morning. Shelled, blanched, and shelled again. Sauteed in butter and topped with salt pepper and pecorino. And they tasted like beans sauteed in butter with salt pepper and pecorino. With all the hype I was expecting a revelation. So, um, what am I missing here?
  12. Some highlights from my week eating through New York City with my mom: Jacques Torres Chocolate Only notable because they were handing out chocolate covered Cheerios on the street in front of the shop. Whole Foods Columbus Circle Grocery store heaven. Want take out roasted duck breast? They’ve got it. The Yoghurt Place II Fabulous Greek yogurt. Even better with the fig, apricot, and almond topping. Grandaisy Bakery Yummy olive rolls and great little sandwiches (if kinda pricey.) Despana Everything Spanish. They have Jamon Iberico. And try the Montenebro goat cheese. Papabubble Ridiculously whimsical tiny candy shop. Pulled sugar candies that look like Fimo dough beads in all sorts of flavors. Rice to Riches We had chocolate chip and my mom who “doesn’t care for rice pudding” licked the bowl. Pinkberry Had my first taste of this tangy treat. I’ll be back. Pommes Frites I can’t go to NYC without stopping here. My favorite is the Rosemary Garlic Mayo. Momofuku Noodle My favorite meal of the whole trip, bar none. We had the “smoked hudson valley duck breast – mustard seeds, sour cream, cinnamon” “steamed buns shiitake” and “roasted rice cakes - shrimp, tamago, cashews” My mouth is watering just thinking about these dishes. Umami defined. Bar Boulud Had the Dégustation de charcuterie, with an excellent rabbit pate, and really nice Tartare de boeuf which was not overly seasoned and really let the taste of the beef shine through. Russ & Daughters More smoked fish than you can shake a stick at. Possibly the best bagel with cream cheese and Nova lox I have ever had (and I’ve eaten a lot of bagels and lox.) WD-50 Fun Molecular Gastronomy place. We did the tasting which was 12 courses and took 2.5 hours. Some really inventive dishes. The Eggs benedict with fried hollandaise and the Beef tounge, cherry-miso, fried quinoa, palm seeds were standouts. Bouchon Bakery Cafe Delicious sandwiches. And stop at the bakery on your way out and pick up some TKO (Thomas Keller Oreo’s.) Salumeria Biellese Not far from Penn Station, perfect Italian Hoagie for the bus ride home.
  13. We ate at Corduroy last week and had a great meal as expected. The new space is lovely, but I made exactly the same comment, the lighting is too bright and needs to be tweaked a bit to give a more intimate experience.
  14. Gaithersburg Farmers Market * Fulks Corner Avenue at Route 355 * 2-6 p.m. Thursdays, June-October I am thinking of stopping off on my way home from the farm tomorrow. Has anyone been? Is it worth the time to stop?
  15. I'm currently on a Familia Swiss Muesli (Original) kick. Just bought a case of six boxes from Amazon ($2 cheaper each than the Co-op and free shipping!)
  16. The farm is not open to the public but I believe they are trying to organize some tours. I will let you know if and when this comes about!

  20. Don't know where I came across this organization, but love the idea (and the photos on the website) Outstanding in the Field They are doing an event in "DC" this year: Dragon Creek Aqua Farm, Montross, VA: Washington, DC Thursday, September 18, 2008 Host Farmer: Bruce Wood of Dragon Creek Aqua Farm, Montross, VA Guest Chef: Anthony Chittum of Vermilion, Alexandria, VA Price: $180 Time: 6:00 PM For our D.C. area dinner, we head out to the coast, and another Outstanding in the Field first: dinner on an aqua farm. At Dragon Creek Aqua Farm, Bruce Wood (U.S.A.F., Ret.) tends 25 acres of Nomini Bay waters, farming oysters, and fishing for crabs, rockfish and eel, which he supplies to select area restaurants. We've brought our long table to ranches, orchards, vineyards, gardens, beaches, and a great many land farms, so we're excited to set it up for aquaculture, too. Chef Anthony Chittum of Vermillion Restaurant in Alexandria, VA, ventures out to this scenic seacoast location to show off a wealth of local ingredients -- especially the fruits of the sea. Outstanding in the Field events feature a leisurely tour of the hosting farm followed by a five course, farm-style dinner at our long table set in a scenic spot. Dinner is accompanied by a wine paired with each course. Diners are joined at the table by the farmer, food producers, a winemaker and other local artisans associated with the meal. I got tickets...has anyone ever been to one of these events?
