  1. Don't they have a room inside? Shogun, no grill today?? Oh, how you giveth and then taketh away...I was getting my hopes up.
  2. Will try to be at the Grill by 11.45 or so.
  3. Rocks rating posters on their earned status:
  4. Wow. (Plump Her? Hardly know her..) Do you think what the poster was looking for was a recommendation of places with chairs that can accommodate a tarmac-sized badonkadonk? That's actually a somewhat fair question because many places I know, especially bistro-style, are definitely designed for a (American) standard-issue bottom. But then again standard-issue size people are more comfortable everywhere. And I say this having just gotten off a transatlantic flight, mind ya.
  5. Tuesday and Wednesdays are actually always bad for me because these tend to be my Bis days. I think a poll (for each proposed dinner) is a fine idea because of of the need to balance many different schedules.
  6. Oh goody. Let's stake a table outside if the weather is fine and if you get there before me.
  7. Anybody want to hit the Grill this Thursday? I'm thinking of making a run from Courthouse.
  8. All kinds of stuff. For real. Broadway mainstays seem to be a staple.
  9. The recent buzz on 21P overshadows a not-so-quiet but rather serviceable restaurant on the same block. Yes, it is the venerable Mimi's, the refuge of waiters who aspire to a career in performing arts but for some reason refuse to move to New York. Usually, the mere fact that dinner will include unsolicited singing and dancing routines, most of them at the decibel level competing with a Delta Shuttle, drives many away. Besides, it somehow became fashionable to poo-poo Mimi's, as if to acknowledge dining there is some great style faux pas. But now that the weather is slowly inching toward summer and Mimi's opened its outdoor section where the singing is barely heard, it would be silly to ignore the place that offers enjoyable, often underappreciated alfresco food - at a reasonable price - in Dupont Circle. Enough said. Finally, here's a tidbit that will interest you lot. On Mondays all the wines on their list except sparkling go for half-price. Yesterday a friend and I hit Mimi's for a casual dinner in the 'hood. We both got a yellow tomato gaspacho with avocado - thick, refreshing and rich. The entrees were a chicken quesadilla that disappeared pretty fast, and for me, a grilled brie sandwich. This is a particular favorite of mine - it comes in form of two generously sized triangles of toasted ciabatta where the cheese is pressed with caramelized onions, tomatoes and spinach. There is a also a side of fresh field greens. This is a satisfying, cleanly executed dish that is a lot better that, frankly, it needs to be at $8 a pop. The bill was $50 for two including a nice bottle of Argentine Malpec that I predictably forgot to examine in more detail. We didn't stay for dessert as I had restocked on dark chocolate at home and was anxious to show off my stash to my friend. So next time you're in Dupont and want some good, unambitious food that won't break the bank, throw away the snobbery and do give Mimi's a chance. Get an outside table and pretend the singing comes from a block away. You won't know the difference.
  10. Has anyone had a pre-theater menu at CB? Going to the opera @ Kennedy Center on Friday and will be looking for a place to get a bite before three hours of music. So, looking to get some feedback on CB as an option.
  11. I've done Morimoto about a year ago and had an amazing meal. It's quite expensive, I think we blew about $400 for dinner for two with sushi, couple of small plates, desserts, and a very generous alcohol allowance, but much fun with food has been had by all and I felt it was worth it. It would help to go with someone who loves food, too. Also, once you've had a few drinks, a constant change of color of the walls boosts the fun and giggles.
  12. Looks like we're heavy on proteins and light on side dishes, so I may add a few Armenian-inspired veggie sides. What are the rules of conduct in public parks, anyway? Should we arrange for a boombox and some groovy tunes? I can contribute my extensive collection of European house and lounge. It aids digestion and all this finger-snapping and toe-tapping expends some calories.
  13. Meanwhile, I hear there's a Polish hole-in-the-wall some place in Wheaton that does a fabulous kielbasa thingie.
  14. I am wondering if it is possible to run some kind of sign-up list (in a separate thread) of who brings what that all of us can access to input what each of us is bringing. In manner of registry or similar. Just so we don't end up with twenty thousand bottles of wine (not that they cannot be used) and not a single napkin. Or thirty side dishes with no protein. I guess we need to bring this up to the attention of computer whiz kids on this board - I do know we have some. Is this sort of thing possible or practical? P.S. And with that, I'm a grouper.
  15. I do love Thomas Sweet for the variety and intensity of taste. The added bonus for me is that eating that cone on my way home equals a walk that I can convince myself expends the calories contained therein. Or so I choose to believe. Not that I, you know, care about calories and such.
  16. Ohhh, wheeee, I forgot to add: very few things here in Moscow actually require a prescription. Rocks, here's your big old chance.
  17. I've only been there once, so can't say my opinion is based on a representative sample, but from what I recall, it was entirely unmemorable. Serviceable Pan-Asian food without any character the likes of which can be found in any strip mall, USA.
  18. On these rare occasions when I would actually eat a french fry, I would give my french fry money to BdC in a heartbeat.
  19. Stretch, you silly sod. Those who can, do. Those who can't, write steamy posts about it on a foodie forum.
  20. Oooh, did you know that Komi reworked their doughnuts? They still come with this gorgeous dip of hot chocolate and whipped cream for dipping, but the doughnuts are more like beignets now and have a sweet tang of honey in the dough.
