  1. It will be interesting to see how this works out. Despite living around the corner, I've never tried it (the reviews are pretty dire), but I always thought that if I won the lottery, I'd love to buy it & transform it into a bbq/Biergarten w/ terraced gardens & that wonderful river view. I hope the new restaurant lives up to the landscape. In the meantime, the food at the Mt. Vernon Inn is not half bad.
  2. Is't it nice to have returning kids from school? Mine will be in tomorrow, & flying out on Monday. My in laws plan on driving up from Athens, GA, & I picked up a brisket & a turkey breast to smoke.
  3. My dog, Taz, in his 'I love George' bandana, we donated to rescue dogs' kennel at MV. If I were a dog, I'd love to live at Mt. Vernon.- (& yes, that's Taz in my avatar, he's a poser).
  4. I made a mess of bacon today for my child & her friends, who were baking mini bundt cakes- I showed them this, but didn't volunteer to make the guac-http://365daysofbacon.wordpress.com/2013/07/01/mini-bacon-guacamole-cups-guest-post-from-all-day-i-dream-about-food/
  5. I drove my daughter up to her aunt's house in Potomac yesterday afternoon so that she could babysit her cousins. When this deal was originally made, my son was supposed to drive her up, so I was annoyed when he backed out (overscheduled at work)- 2 hrs on the beltway, so she can babysit. The air was blue in our vehicle. I am grateful that they paid her an outrageous amount of money & that I didn't die in a fireball on the beltway.
  6. I had lunch here yesterday, w/ a friend, & was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a bog standard meal of 1/2 turkey club & clam chowder & a Lost Coast tangerine wheat beer. My friend ordered an app of lobster dip, a creamsicle cocktail (ok, sounded yuck to me), when her drink arrived & she tasted it (didn't like it), our waitress noticed immediately, offered to get her something else, & suggestions, but my friend declined, & the server took it away & said she would take it off the bill. When our lunch specials arrived (me-turkey club & clam chowder, her- 4 cheese grilled cheese & tomato bisque), mine was delicious, her grilled cheese was burnt on the surface. She tried scraping it off, the waitress noticed again, sent the manager over, he noted it was burnt, & took that off her ticket, too. I was very impressed that they noticed these things since they had a full house. My food was good & my friend said that despite hers having problems, she would return.
  7. These are cruises I'd love to go on-http://www.sixthman.net/festivals/. I love Lyle Lovett, & great music, boats, sunshine sounds like a perfect combo to me. I have friends that cruise regularly, they love that they can leave from Baltimore, & if I could figure out how to schedule in advance & get over my fear of norovirus, crowds, & childhood memories of " The Poseiden Adventure", I would be walking the gangplank. I also love to read stories about cooking on cruise ships, they have some serious systems set up. http://feast-blog.com/inside-the-kitchens-of-a-cruise-ship/ http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/secrets-of-a-cruise-ship-kitchen-high-cuisine-on-the-high-seas http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2011/07/inside-the-kitchen-of-the-queen-mary-2/
  8. I have a spoonula, & I can never extricate my bundt cakes either. (3 elaborate molds, including a mini & a 2-pc. Dia de Los Muertos). But I'm looking at that shiitake log under a glass cloche...
  9. We got those huge poms, too & I told my dear daughter she'd better eat them before I chuck them- the first one went quickly, but the others are languishing.
  10. No haters here- just purchased my discounted H'ween glass plates, bone shaped beer opener, & sheep dish towel - now, ask me about when my DH buys me impulse (his, not mine) things full price, like the Easter bunny salad plates & enormous platter- I DO love them, but struggle to fit them in...
  11. Thermapen is awesome, mine is purple.
  12. Congratulations, I bet the wedding dinner will be fabulous.
  13. I took a class at Artisan Chocolates a few years ago, & had one of the spookiest experiences of my life- driving home on the GW parkway, it wasn't that late, maybe 9:30, but there was no one else on the road, no lights, I thought everyone else had been annihilated.
  14. TJMaxx & HomeGoods are great for finding kitchen stuff you didn't think you needed, but that you covet anyway. I am going to stop going w/ a friend, she always suggests it after lunch, & we go in, she gets nothing, & I end up w/ all kinds of random stuff- 6 pale green Polish champagne flutes, anyone?
  15. I attended a holiday reception at Mount Vernon last night. I am a bad guest- I received the postcard a few weeks ago, stuck it on the door because it has a picture of a camel in the snow (still trying to figure that out) & forgot about it. I noticed it yesterday, realized I hadn't RSVP'd, tried at the last minute to get some friends to join me (they're all busy), figured I'd pass, but then Lizzy said we should go (she noted the extra discount at the gift shop & figured she'd do some shopping). For this sort of thing, I thought the food was above average-hot & cold hors d'oeuvres, wine & cider. Chicken on skewers, w/ a spicy sauce that looked mustardy, but didn't taste like mustard, crabcakes (that I thought were meatballs until I tasted them) better than lots of crabcakes I've had, cheese platters, strawberries dipped in chocolate. I had some friends in town a few weeks ago, & we met at the Mt. Vernon Inn for lunch-pulled pork sandwich, club sandwich, & 2 shrimp & crab Louis salads, delicious & great service. & I went for a ladies' get together last week & was pleasantly surprised to find Forge Brewworks' Belgian Blonde on draft.
  16. Ginger chewies & cranberry upside down cake sound wonderful, recipes? I bet they'd be great together, too, a ginger chewy cranberry upside down cake. We had turkey, so I've been making tons of turkey stock. Lunch today was soup w/ turkey stock, turkey, bok choy, & mushrooms, w/ a hit of Sriracha- was great before the dogs jumped on the couch & flipped my soup.
  17. My personal observations- I don't like to drink hot beverages in a glass mug. I drink coffee in a navy or black mug & tea in a teacup or a white mug. I do not know why my husband continues to buy those enormous Starbucks white coffee mugs, w/ different place names on them. There is no more room in the cabinet for them & they are too large. I only drink coffee at home, Starbucks once while traveling, but I am not a coffee addict. Sound like a cranky witch, don't I? I only drink coffee maybe 2x/wk. I drink iced tea every morning, & all day, in any kind of cup or glass.
  18. I am a knife nut. For starter knives, I like Kiwi knives, Thai brand from Importfood.com, & the brightly colored Komachi knives, recently purchased from Costco. You can use the inexpensive IKEA magnetic holders for these. Once you want better knives, my 2 favorite sources are Japanesechefsknives.com & Korin.com, they have a large selection, w/ good introductory brands being Hiromoto, Togiharu, & JCK. For nicer knives, I like Mag-Blok knife holders from Benchcrafted.com. Once you fall down this rabbit hole, you might not come back up...my kids know if they use certain knives, they have to wash & dry after use, & put them back, & they do that 95% of the time. When Tom moved out, he took a huge set of Kiwi knives- I knew he would look after knives, but his housemates probably wouldn't. He also took the battery powered s&p grinders I received from my wonderful MIL, much to his sister's dismay. I'm also partial to gifts of wooden cutting boards, bowls, & utensils (& as a tiki fan, I have lots of Koa trays & bowls). Oh, who am I kidding?-I have TONS of random cooking gadgets & rarely discard anything, I try to rotate stuff. & kitchen towels (Pat, I should have read your post first), I just got a really cute one from WS, black cotton, 'Tres Sheep' (I love sheep, too).
  19. I'm going to try it for a late lunch, so I can check out both the lunch & happy hour specials- I am a thrifty beer lover, who has not visited the Springfield Mall since it reopened, guess it's time, Xmas shopping & all that....
  20. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VwIpjqbTozY# My SIL & I both like Pitbull, I was ready for the energy after dinner, & was bouncing along w/ him. "Everybody sexy, put your hands up in the air"
  21. Totally agree, Nola Caine sounds like the food columnist for the local paper (who could also be an undercover pizza maker/ superhero).
