  1. Woohoo! Congratulations, I will let you know how the arepa flour works...
  2. I'm verklempt- even though the rest of my yard looks like an overgrown horror show, my loquat (that I thought had been killed during the freeze) is resprouting, & the palms look like they're recovering, too, & the figs are leafing out at the roots. I'm so happy.
  3. In the interest of beer tasting, I visited the Forge Brew Works (http://www.forgebrewworks.com) 2 weekends ago, it's located in an industrial park, on Terminal Rd. I sampled several brews, then picked up a growler of my favorite, the kolsch, to take up to Carlisle, PA to celebrate my DH's graduation from the Army War College this past weekend. He's had a good time up there checking out the microbreweries (& larger, I have a great Yuengling tee shirt, don't snear, Yuengling is my favorite inexpensive local beer). Forge was very nice, still bare bones, but the folks there were very nice, & the beer was good. I just wish they had a wheat beer. I tried the petite saison, kolsch, blonde & roggenbier. I'm up for sampling other beers, I've been in a pleasant rut, because my favorite beer, Hoegaarden, has been on sale at the class VI, it jumped from $12.99 (a giveaway) to $18.70. So, a good time to sample other beers...
  4. Pfftt! (Bill the cat, people). Zora's got this locked up...
  5. We just drove back from my husband's graduation from the Army War College in Carlisle, PA, & we passed the Catoctin Mt. Orchard on the way back, we didn't stop, but it was a beautiful drive, & I loved seeing the fruit trees spread over the hills. I wish that I lived on a farm or an orchard.
  6. I thought this was a good article in the Sunday mag-http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/jose-andres-thinks-food-can-fix-the-world-starting-in-haiti/2014/06/05/8e4de760-d0cb-11e3-9e25-188ebe1fa93b_story.html I admire his stamina, & commitment to feeding folks.
  7. Sounds delicious, I voted too, do you think I could use PAN arepa flour instead of masa?
  8. Yes, I use a really old, ratchet (I used the word) tiny pot to boil water for my tea, although I own an electric kettle.
  9. Finally found some Sungolds, & trying to plant all the cucumbers. I have a fine crop of weeds, in place of grass, in the backyard- well, at least it's green. The roses look lovely, thank you Astrid, some of them survived.
  10. I am going through BBQ withdrawal- my son went off to college, my daughter's teammates don't seem to like BBQ as much, so other than a flurry this past month (the boys were leaving school, didn't eat much, so it's in the freezer), my smoker is sidelined. But I did make an awesome Brunswick stew, w / leftover smoked pork butt, smoked chicken thighs, onions, garlic, Rotel tomatoes, frozen baby limas, & white corn (& other stuff)- with some jasmine rice, it was delicious.
  11. I read it, very interesting, it's kind of amazing how quickly he fit in to Noma, & assumed a leadership role. I also remembering seeing him on 'Chopped'.
  12. I have most of the picnic stash (tablecloths, leftover plates, etc.) & I wouldn't have been able to make it to the 6/15 date (going to NC for my niece's graduation), so I'm happy that we are planning for a fall picnic. I'm anticipating a hectic summer, hopefully by fall, I will be ready to cook, & hang out w/ all you guys for a relaxing, amazing picnic.
  13. So, all of you mothers out there, what are your plans (or your family's plan for you) for tomorrow? I have to live vicariously through you, tomorrow, I have to pack my son out of his dorm & my daughter has indoor field hockey, so any MD plans will be postponed to a later date. It's probably just as well, as most restaurants will be overwhelmed. But indulge me, & tell me about your wonderful Mother's Day plans (or what you're doing for your mother). I wish my mom was close enough for me to ditch the rest of the family & take her out for lunch.
  14. I eat more quinoa these days, & I think adding it to chili is the best use (probably heresy to Texans & other chili purists, but I like rice w/ my chili, & quinoa is not a bad substitute). Now, if I could just get over the fact that it looks like ringworm...
  15. My husband just bought a juicer, & is doing a 40 day cleanse-pray for me. OK, it's not horrible, but he's just so much damn healthier than me, I guess I shouldn't worry that he plans to outlive me by many years, I won't be around to see it.
  16. I am so impressed that you could do pork in your pressure cooker (although I'm not surprised, because pork is very forgiving). I really need to experiment more w/ my pressure cooker- I still do stocks w/ leftover meats in my slow cooker, & my puppies appreciate it, because the stock gets poured over their food.
  17. Definitely one of the perks of being the president, I can't think of too many others.
  18. Had lunch today w/ a friend at 'Not Your Average Joe's' in Woodbridge-my turkey blt was decidedly average, but our server was nice, & my leftovers came in a cellulose Chinet box that will be good for starting seeds.
  19. & I'm going to link to this, too- http://cuisinetc-catering.blogspot.com one of my all time favorite catering sites, I have gotten so many great ideas from them (of course, this is a wedding shower, not a baby shower).
  20. Linking to this, my only experience in cooking for the masses, based around BBQ- http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?/topic/17827-cooking-for-a-team-of-hungry-young-athletes/ & 25 lax guys= 50 baby shower guests. The only variable I can't help w/ is alcoholic beverages, but I'd go long. Do as much as you can ahead of time, try to set up for a good flow of service, & then sit back & enjoy the party.
  21. I'm giddy picturing 250 lbs of rabbit manure-I'm way behind on garden planning. The big thing for me is that we took out lots of the trees in the backyard, so now it's sunny, & bare, & a huge mud pit- must start planting the Earthboxes, & circular planters. Sungolds are my favorite tomatoes & I will try & grow any hot pepper I come across. Spring has (sort of) arrived!
  22. Thank you, lord- 2 of my favorite things acting in harmony.
  23. I've only had 1 trip to New Orleans, got the muffaletta at Cochon Butcher, served cold w/ a small amount of olive dressing, it was very good, & the Gambino was even better. I think Cochon Butcher has recently expanded, which is a good thing, we got there right before the lunch rush, & it was packed.
  24. I truly appreciate this-I joined this site before I joined TWOP, I lurk a lot more than I post, but I have received so much information from these sites & I'm sad that TWOP will just evaporate. Long live DR.com!
  25. Maybe I should buy smaller quantities, currently using an enormous (20 lb. bag) of Thai Hom Mali rice "Orchids" brand, it cooks up perfectly in the Zojirushi rice cooker, I make a batch every 2-4 days. Even w/ just Lizzy & I at home, we consume lots of rice.
