  1. I have a bacon press (Camp Chef), & I don't remember ever using it, but I may, some day. I have a cast iron griddle that goes on the camp stove.
  2. I'm still trying to figure out why so many of my kids' friends celebrate their birthdays w/ dinners at National Harbor-I don't think the food could be that great, maybe it's just the idea of going somewhere else for dinner that's appealing. For reference, we live in southern Fairfax county, & I can understand going to Old Town for a treat, but National Harbor? The other perennial favorite is any Japanese hibachi/steakhouse, especially if the kids just get dropped off, or the adults are unobtrusive...IMO, kids just love steak & seafood, w/ some tricks & yum-yum sauce. I wish I could win the Megamillions & build a teppanyaki grill in my backyard, before the next birthday party (camp stove & griddle is not going to cut it).
  3. Thanks for reminding me I haven't been to TJs in a couple of months, & I need triple ginger cookies, feta dressing, random salsas, TJ hefeweizen, & probably lots of other stuff.
  4. Porcupine, thanks for the driving tips, & I agree about adrenaline thwarting your best efforts to stay in control. I've been in a couple of accidents (t- boned by someone else) & it's amazing how time simultaneously freezes & then, 'boom'! It's over (before you can even react). How about this one? http://annandale.patch.com/groups/around-town/p/large-sink-hole-in-annandale-shuts-down-hummer-road It's like your worst nightmare.
  5. Still trying to analyze my recent interest in accapella groups, maybe I'm just envious because I can't sing at all. I worry about the kids who are in the background & just get to sing 'woop-woop' or 'Chhhh-chhhh' over & over. Florida State University AcaBelles - Royals (opb. Lorde)
  6. Well, lately, every time I think about going out to get something to eat (usually at lunchtime), I realize I have plenty of food at home & that it would be wasteful. My meals at home aren't really creative or inspired, but they're nourishing, sometimes I wish I had an excuse to just eat out all the time. I know, not a real problem....
  7. Sometimes I read the filtered reviews, just for laughs. Usually, you can get a sense of the business from the posted reviews. It's just another tool to evaluate a business, & it helps, if you have no background info.. I like reading reviews on Yelp, although I read w/ a critical eye.
  8. I'm really interested about eating out in NY (as compared to DC area). I understand that people do a lot more takeout, & just dining out in general, because they live in small spaces, it's more difficult to shop w/ out a vehicle, & there are more choices, but am I just making naive assumptions?
  9. I think I've only eaten at Wilber's once, after my sister's graduation from UNC-CH, on the way home, & I don't remember a thing about it. I wasn't very interested in BBQ back then. But I can't tell you how many times I've passed it- living in Chapel Hill, & now, further north, going through Goldsboro means I'm getting close to home (Sneads Ferry). My sister had a pig picking at her wedding rehearsal & her husband has a pro smoking rig ( the kind you tow behind a truck). Now I respect my NC BBQ background, my Weber Smoky Mountain gets a workout, & I can truly appreciate some slow cooked pork (heretically, I only smoked turkey breasts & brisket for T'giving).
  10. Anyone that worries about 'fatty' in their restaurant name or description is just kidding themselves-it's one meal out of how many? & how closely do they monitor their intake? (It's a minor/ insignificant problem, I think, unless you eat all of your meals out) -I would like to eat at Fatty 'Cue, but I can reproduce most of their dishes, & I bet my larb is better.
  11. It's a great time to be born in the Capitol city-many happy birthdays to come, & felicitations to the new parents....
  12. I also had a Capresso coffeemaker, after 15+ years, some small piece broke off, & I replaced it w/ an inexpensive Hamilton Beach coffeemaker-my coffee is just not that good anymore, & I realize I need to get a better coffeemaker. I don't need one that does it all (I have a grinder), but I think a thermal carafe is necessary. I am low tech, I just want coffee that tastes good....
  13. My T'giving went well also-I brought smoked turkey breast & brisket (w/ BBQ sauces), bean dip, & creamed spinach - & our host had 3 fried turkeys (w/ one of those cool in house fryers), & we had ham & hummus, & 3 pies & 3 cakes-We had 24 people, adults & kids, lots of space for people to find a spot to relax in, & they had the best behaved dog ever (not that I would try to shame my dogs, but it would be a different story....). Hope you guys all had a relaxed T'giving....
  14. You've probably already found one, but I think this cornbread stuffing looks good-http://www.loveandlemons.com/2012/11/15/poblano-cornbread-stuffing/ & I don't even like stuffing (but I love poblanos).
  15. Well, this is most T'giving dinners for most of my adult life-I've adapted to it now, (& if you can make a drinking game out of it, bonus points).
  16. OK, I take back everything I said about our tree guy, turns out it was a series of mishaps (he had the wrong address, went & talked to a neighbor, who was probably confused why this guy was asking what she needed). The crew started last Friday, they're still working, but that's mostly because everyone in the neighborhood is pulling him aside to look at their yard (I'm happy he's getting lots of business). We're having a lot done-3 mature maples (2 of them were diseased) removed (stumps & roots, too), limbing up of 5 more large trees, & a couple of smaller ones, & removal of most of my figs. It's my own fault, they were planted 5-6 years ago (I thought they were marginal in this area, & needed protection-ha, turns out they're rudely healthy) & most of them were too close to the house or fence (1 was crowding a beautiful windmill palm). Before the guys cut them down, I took lots of cuttings, so if anyone wants to give them a try, just send me your address, & I'll mail them out. They were purchased from Paradise Nursery in VA Beach (before they closed down) & I have cuttings of Battaglia (Sandy's strawberry Verte), Conadria, & Mystery Fig (might be a Celeste). It's going to take some time to get used to my new yard, it looks huge & barren (but a lot more sun). The dogs are still confused, not as many trees to chase each other around.
  17. I don't have a problem w/ being a model customer (I used to get dog food from Amazon, on subscription)-the gloves were a total impulse purchase, & I had a couple of guys watching me try on gloves, & debating the merits (I thought the gloves ran a little small). I still like Costco...
  18. Just finding a good takeout place close by is noteworthy (speaking as someone who doesn't have one)-I had lunch yesterday at House of Dynasty, first time I've eaten there in 8 years, not amazing but glad it's there. I am very glad that I live in this area, so many great restaurants around here.
  19. I agree, because I hesitated today for a long time over some gnocchi (4 pk) , Lizzy likes gnocchi, but this was a large quantity, almost makes me want to cook for the masses...
  20. I am trying to avoid the 'Costco Sinkhole'-I went in today, I only needed to pick up dog food, but other items kept throwing themselves in my cart- gloves, jeez, it's freakin' cold outside today & I have no gloves, chicken broth, apple cider, a big honkin' bottle of Pinot Grigio, & a slice of cheese pizza for lunch. I really need to study how Costco's business model has totally replicated my shopping weaknesses.
  21. I am becoming the queen of leftover soup-lunch at House of Dynasty yesterday-after hot & sour soup (oddly sweet) & spring roll, I brought home half of my Hunan shrimp-shrimp, broccoli, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, a little rice. I added chicken broth & a smidge of Tom Yum paste (it was still a little sweet), & voila! Tonight's dinner (Lizzy passed, she didn't appreciate the mixed in rice). The only problem is that reused broccoli gets a little grassy tasting.
  22. I thought the recipe for almond & oat apple/cranberry crumble (GF) in this week's WaPo food section looked really good, & I would add some crystallized ginger (you may have seen this on CH), I got a box of very good crystallized ginger at the new HomeGoods store, & I've been having a piece almost every day-it's amazing, soft & spicy, almost medicinal, & better than any medicine I'm taking...
  23. I think your fantasy T'giving menu sounds delicious (but I'd make pork/shrimp/ cabbage spring rolls or potstickers, because they are my favorites). I was talking w/ a friend the other day about T'giving menus, & after I told her all the traditional things I don't like, & consequently, don't want to cook, she said, 'You must be fun to have as a guest'. I haven't heard yet from my SIL what items I'll be asked to contribute this year, but I still enjoy Thanksgiving, because it's not ALL about the food, it's family & friends.
