  1. It could just be me, I picked up Chinese takeout for my child & her friends today (hey, had to get the driveway shoveled somehow)-it was just not good, my Hunan shrimp was uninspiring.
  2. Actually, it was fed to 2 dogs, & if I can't eat it, it has to be be pretty bad, I can eat almost anything. Maybe it would be better if you ate it at the restaurant. And before anyone accuses me of animal cruelty, I don't feed my dogs anything that I think is spoiled or harmful (just stuff I don't want to eat).
  3. My teenage daughter & her friends went to Old Town last night because the weather was nice & they wanted to dress up & have fun. They planned to eat at Faccia Luna, but faced w/ a 30 minute wait, they went to Chipotle, then to a candy shop & the Lucky Knot, & finished at Starbucks. Lives of Fairfax teens (I didn't drive this time)...she had field hockey today & ate at Moe's.
  4. Well, guess I'm an outlier, then. My son, who was on spring break from GMU, had to come home Friday, & brought his leftovers (chicken & broccoli & fried rice) from China Star (most of the on campus dining was closed). I thought they were pretty bad, bad enough that I couldn't finish eating them (he left right after he came home & abandoned the leftovers) & fed them to the dogs (the dogs liked them, I think). I still have not found any Chinese food that I like locally, but since I've found lots of other foods that are good, I will survive.
  5. But if you dress casually (jeans) & prewipe on the back of your pants, you can usually dry off w/ paper towels or the electric dryer, & make it back to your table without anyone noticing the dampness on your pants (unless you're a supermodel & everyone's checking out your rear view). Why am I even thinking about this?
  6. Thanks for the heads-up, my side of town & my kind of food-will try to get there soon. I was just telling my friend I can't remember the last time I had Chinese food that I loved or even liked (I think I've eaten at most of the subpar Chinese restaurants in my vicinity).
  7. Yes, & your children (assuming they are the same sex & accompanying you in the restroom) love to point out how gross your hands look - ah, loss of youth & skin elasticity, it'll hit them someday.
  8. I finally tried this place myself today (yeah, got another groupon) & I thought it was fine for lunch. I wouldn't rush back, only because I am that one person who doesn't really like fried chicken. I thought what we had was good (plain & soy sauce), hot, crispy, not greasy, but I'm just not into fried chicken. Dumplings were ok (greasy), miso soup & salad were fine, bulgogi kimbap was my favorite item, & our server was great-kept our hot tea & water filled. It's a small place, but it filled up over lunchtime.
  9. I'm sure other folks besides me are absolutely gutted (I love it when they say this on masterchef UK) about all the plants that have probably been killed by this cold weather, I'm looking at a loquat tree in my front yard that was about 6 years old & it's brown & shriveled. I guess I should look at it as an opportunity for new plantings, but right now all I can think about is the plants that have died.
  10. Gotta wonder what jay Z & JT must be thinking (not to mention that Kurt Cobain is spinning in his grave)- my kid is participating in a frat fund raising activity soon-he's in the lip synch group, & poor boy can't sing or dance. UNC Clef Hangers-Holy Grail (Fall Concert 2013)
  11. A Top Chef spam quickfire in Hawaii? http://eater.com/archives/2014/01/28/top-cheffage-97.php Almost makes me want to start watching again, instead of tivo'ing & reading the results online.
  12. I was going back through my bookmarks, & I was mystified as to why I saved a recipe for homemade spam (I don't know if I've ever eaten spam...I have had potted meat, which surely is worse).
  13. http://www.washingtonian.com/articles/people/the-chef-who-brought-down-bob-mcdonnell-tells-all/index.php
  14. My MIL sent us a CasaBella silicone MicroEgg, I'm still trying to persuade someone to try it out (we don't eat a lot of eggs here). Edited to add, I am not a breakfast person at all, I like a small bagel, toasted, w/ peanut butter (despite the fact that I need to avoid carbs & really should be eating a HB egg.)
  15. I spent the last few cold days watching MasterChef New Zealand, it looked like a terrifying competition, but the contestants were so polite & positive. I finished up w/ the finale this morning, & my DH said, "they sure swear a lot"-it was bleep- bleep -bleep. Lots of fun to watch, it makes me want to pick up some stuff at the store & experiment.
  16. Not for coffee, but my family got me a lovely Teavana tea tumbler for Xmas-Kita, w/ an integral tea screen/steeper (blue/ white ceramic). I've been drinking lots of Lobsang Souchang, which is why I'm awake at odd hours.
  17. Chili should be spicy, gives you an excuse to drink more beer (but probably not at work)-good luck w/ your submissions.
  18. I have to recognize Edwards Landing Lights - https://www.facebook.com/EdwardsLandingLights I haven't seen them in person, but they brought me Gangnam style Halloween lights.... Here's 'Sail'- AWOL Nation- http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhzzta-bJ_s&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DUhzzta-bJ_s
  19. My family gave me a jar of Momofuku marinade for Xmas, so I'm making the recipe on the jar-pork w/ carrots, shallots, daikon (I added mushrooms) cooked in a clay pot. I had to chuck the sauerkraut in my frig the other day because it was expired (I know it's fermented, but it was REALLY expired). Tomorrow, we'll be having leftovers, collards & blackeyed peas. I hope everyone is looking forward to a wonderful new year- 2014, here we come!
  20. I am dying here- that looks so delicious, & my (lovely) extended family wants to go to a hibachi restaurant on Xmas eve-onion volcanoes & shoe leather shrimp, anyone? Then it's down to Sneads Ferry after Xmas, where most of the seafood will be fried, but if I have to suffer & eat my weight in fried shrimp, I'll do it. My NY's resolution will be to make it in, to eat your food at ETR.
  21. That looks delicious-but I have to use almonds, because I have a ton of them (I was going to say 'buttload', but thought that would be crass)-I think they will be awesome- thanks, Zora (must feel nice to beat out so many other recipes).
  22. I have many fond memories of my time at UNC-CH (& I'm resigned to the fact my kids probably won't go there), I can understand my son not getting in (out of state & not stellar stats), but my niece lives in NC, & isn't even applying, because she thinks she won't get in. I guess standards were lower when I attended. College is a racket (guess it always has been)....
  23. My son was asking me today, if we had to move away from here, where would I want to live? San Diego was in the top 5 (over Hawaii, because of quarantine for the dogs). if any of you guys had to leave, where would you want to go?
